Plans for 1998

The Car is almost ready to have the front and rear screens fitted. Because in the long term I am planning to change the colour of the car from lime green to blue metallic, I am preparing the area's around the glass seals with the correct colour paint.

Once the Glass is in the car I can check through the electric’s for faults and bad connections, this has always been a problem with the Lotus Elan. I have purchased a new set of rear lights as these are getting rare and may be difficult to source them in the future.

I will be buying a new set of carburettors for the Elan, these are quite expensive but they will save me work in the long-term. If I had decided to refurbish the current carbs then it could be time consuming and there may be poor results.

Next I will be in the position to start the engine. This could lead to the discovering that the clutch has frozen itself to the flywheel. Ah well one step or challenge at a time.

I have Spax Suspension kit for the Elan as the current shocks will not pass the UK's MOT testing. The Handbrake needs completion.

Hopefully by this time the Elan will be ready for its MOT (Ministry Of Transport Test) this should reveal any significant problems.

I plan a busy year, there are other projects on the go, I plan to complete my wife’s 1966 MGB GT Coupe and move house (with a larger garage)

To the Future, I know that will be rebuilding the engine in 1999 to allow unleaded petrol to be used. I have found a Tall block Lotus engine in good condition and will use this for the next engine, taking it from 1558 to 1700 cc. I bought this engine from Harry Metcalfe who used to race Elan 26R and has now moved onto Maserati Ghibli Cup's.
