Switching

A pre-requisite for developing life skills is an understanding of "cause and effect".  Some children and adults with special needs who are developmentally young need help to understand this basic concept which is vital for them to learn that they can have an effect on the environment.  Thus have an opportunity to change or control aspects of their lives.

" Switches" such as pressure pads and sound activated switches can mean that the smallest action can result in a meaningful reward.  Therefore we can actively encourage effort with a reward that is meaningful and pleasurable to each person.  If a person can learn to associate with a switch activating a piece of equipment then this skill can be transferred and generalised into many different situations.

Using switches in a multi-sensory environment has the advantage that you can isolate one effect and thus the person is quite sure that they have caused the effect to happen, also effects produced in a MSR can be very pronounced so that they are very distinct and more easily perceptible.

In SPACE there are several "wireless" switches which can be used with equipment such as fibre optics, projectors and bubble tubes. It is also possible to "switch" the overall environment e.g. the Theatre Lighting so that a client can choose whether he prefers red, green or blue lighting.
