THE 13th WINTER CHALLENGE TO BARCELONA, SPAIN.

THE START FROM BROOKLANDS MUSEUM,

26TH JANUARY 2002.

It always amazes me just how many people turn up to watch an event like this (and I'm one of them!). I arrived at Brooklands at 7.45am on a wet Saturday morning in the middle of January to be greeted by the site of at least three hundred people already there!  And there was more to come!

The Winter Challenge this year was heading to Barcelona and once again it was a complete variety of vehicles. Just about the newest I saw was a late sixties MGB, the earliest being a 19245 Bentley 4.5 litre model.

The cars started leaving the museum grounds promptly at 9.30 to head off for the coast and then across Europe for the best part of a week.

A visitor from the US. This is Mark Janiczek and Nicholas Falcone's 1956 Chevrolet Corvette.

An eclectric mixture! Everything from the MGC in the foreground to an MG TC, Big Healey, MGAs and Mini Coopers.

This Steven Collins and Mark Steinberg's Benley Le Mans, a huge car!

The 1961 Ford Zephyr of Gary Denham, Nick Smith and Danny Denham. This was a novice crew - good luck lads!

This is the 1934 Riley March Special of Brian Dale and James Vann

In scrutineering, this is the Daimler V8 250 of Bryan Salt and Roger Gilabert, another novice crew.

This is the 1932 Aston Martin of Keith & Jason Piper.

Triumph TR3A and Porsche 912.

Expecting bad weather??

Lagonda cockpit.

The 1934 Lagonda was first off.

The 1959 Studebaker Larch of Richard Foster and William Secrest was flown over especially for the event from the USA.

The Collins / Steinberg Bentley.

Here's a car you don't see very often these days, a 1971 Wolseley 18/85 MkIII.

A true classic, the Porsche 356 of Darren Walker and Conor McGauley.

By the time the cars started off, the wind was lashing down, it was cold too.  Still, that will prepare the teams for the trip over the Alps etc!!
