After joining the Chiltern Section of the BKKS I realised my old Pond was not up to the job, If I wanted to Keep Koi I would have to rethink the pond. What follows is a short account of the building of my pond.

Digging the hole

As you can see the pond was built using 9" hollow concrete blocks this was put down on a 9" concrete bed which had reinforced steel running through it and up the walls.

The Filter Chambers

Here you can see the mid-water feed and Skimmer, this works off the ITT Marlow pump with a three-way valve between, which controls how much is drawn through the filter and the Skimmer.

The pond was built in 1992 and is 5000 gallons. It is run using a one horsepower ITT Marlow pump with a 24" sand filter. There is one 30 watt UV and a 50,000 BTU Gas Heater with a Heat Exchanger.

Building the Walls

There are two Bottom drains with 4" pipe work going to the filters. The Filters consist of a long settlement Chamber followed by 3 Bays of media. One of brushes and two of Japanese Matting. Each chamber has a bottom drain, which is directed, to the end chamber to waste.

The pond is some six years old now and has settled down. There are about 30 Koi swimming around within it's depth up to 30 inches. The pond Boiler has Just packed up on me and I am looking to put in a domestic one with a heat exchanger. I hope this give’s you something to think about if you're building your own pond.
