Choosing the road
When we begin
a trip to a place where we have never been before, we inquire which road
we should take. We travel with our eyes wide open, and if we notice that
we are on the wrong road, we turn round and look for the right one.
Every day you
and I are traveling through this world toward eternity, to a destiny that
will never end, and which cannot be changed when we once arrive there.
Do you know where you are going?
Our
Guide Book
God, in His
love and mercy, has given us a Guide Book, the Bible, which shows us clearly
the way to heaven. The quotations given here are taken from this Book.
"Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105).
The Wide Road
There are many
people on this road. "Wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth
to destruction, and many there be which gin thereat" (Matthew 7:13).
Mos of them
have their eyes closed. They do not know or they do not care that they
are on the road to destruction. "There is a way which seemeth right unto
a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death" (Proverbs 14:12). "The
god of this world (the devil has blinded the minds of them which believe
not" (2 Corinthians 4:4).
The Loads
The people
on this road are burdened with sin. "All have sinned, and come short
of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). We cannot hide even one sin from God.
"Man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart"
(! Samuel 16:7). The loads are chained on their backs. You and I cannot
get rid of a single sin by our own efforts. The load gets heavier as time
goes on, and "The wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23).
God's Judgment
"It is appointed
unto men once to die, but aft this the judgment" (Hebrews 9:27).
"And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it . . . and I saw
the dead, small and great, stand before God: and the books were opened
: and another book was opened, which is the Book of Life: and the dead
were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according
to their works . . . And whosoever was not found written in the Book of
Life was cast into the Lake of Fire" (Revelations 20:11, 12, 15).
Since God is
holy and just, there must be punishment for sin. God's Word tells us that
there is a hell, a place of eternal punishment for those who do not obey
God. The Bible says, "The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all
the nations that forget God" (Psalm 9:17). You do not have to be very bad
to go there - it is also for those who forget God.
But God is also
a God of love, "not willing that any should perish, but that all should
come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9). In His great mercy and love, H has made
a way of escape for all who really want it. Do you want to find the way
of life?
The Way of Life.
The Saviour
Since we could
not deliver ourselves from our sins, nor from the just punishment for our
sins, God has provided a Saviour. "For God so loved the world, that
He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not
perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). God, the Heavenly Father,
sent His only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, from heaven to this world; He
lived as a man, but never sinned. He went about doing good : healing the
sick, cleansing the lepers, casting out demons, forgiving repentant sinners
and teaching the people about God.
But His great
purpose in becoming a man was to die as a sacrifice for us all; to give
His Divine, sinless life and shed His precious blood to pay the penalty
for our sins. He let wicked men take Him, scourge Him until His back ws
covered with bloody gashes, put a crown of thorns on His head, and finally
nail Him by His ands and feet to a cross, where He hung in agony. "Who
His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree" (1 Peter 2:24).
He died for you and for me.
After three
days in the tomb, Jesus Christ rose from the dead! He walked and talked
with His disciples, and after forty days He ascended up to heaven, where
He sits t the right hand of God, a living Saviour, with "all power given
to Him in heaven and in earth" (Matthew 28:18). "Wherefore He is
able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing
He ever liveth to make intercession for them" (Hebrews 7:25).
Heaven
Heaven is the
place where God dwells in all His glory. The Lord Jesus said "I go
to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I
will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye
may be also" (John 14: 2-3).
It is a marvelous
place, where "god shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there
shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there
be any more pain : for the former things are passed away" (Revelations
21:4).
It is a holy
place. "There shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth,
neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie : but they which
are written in the Lamb's Book of Life" (Revelations 21:27).
But there is
only one way to heaven. The Lord Jesus said : "I am the way, the truth,
and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me" (John 14:6). "Neither
is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven,
given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).
The Way of Salvation
-
"Repent ye, and
believe the Gospel" (Mark 1:15). To repent is to turn from sin to God with
our whole heart.
-
Come to the Lord
Jesus Christ in prayer, just as you are, with your load of sin and ask
Him to forgive you. He says "Him that cometh to Me, I will in no wise cast
out" (John 6:37). "Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28).
-
Trust in Christ
alone for your salvation. "The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth
us from all sin" (1 John 1:7).
-
He will give you
a new life - eternal life! Jesus says : "He that heareth My Word,
and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not
come into condemnation, but is passed from death unto life" (John 5:24).
"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature : old things are
passed away; behold all things are become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17).
-
You will have peace
and assurance. "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with
God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 5:1). "And this is the record,
that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He
that hath the son, hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God, hath
not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name
of the Son of God; that ye may KNOW that ye have eternal life" (1 John
5:11-3).
Welcome!
You are now in the family of God. "And because you are sons, God has sent
forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"r"
(Galatians 4:6).
The Holy Spirit
lives in you. "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power
and of love, and of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7).
The Holy Spirit
gives you power to live a holy life. "Likewise the Spirit also helps in
our weaknesses." (Romans 8:5).
You will become
a strong Christian. Read the Bible. "As newborn babes desire the sincere
milk of the Word, that ye may grow thereby" (1 Peter 2:2). Ask God to guide
and each you as you read, by His Holy Spirit.
Come near to
God in prayer every day, "Be careful for nothing but in everything by prayer
and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto
God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep
your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6 and 7).
Tell your friends
you have accepted the Lord Jesus into your life and you've become a Christian.
God will honour this. "Go home to thy friends and tell them how great things
the Lord hath done for thee" (Mark 5:19).
If you fall
into any sin, confess it quickly to God. "If we confess our sins, He is
faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness".
(1 John 1:9).
I
shall pray you will meet other Christians and associate with them. "Let
us be concerned for one another, to help one another to show love and to
do good. Let us not give up the habit of meeting together; let us encourage
one another". (Hebrews 10:24-25).
Do not be afraid,
for Christ is with you. "He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake
thee" (Hebrews 13:5).
