Units

The Auxilia formed a large part of the Imperial Roman Army and was recruited from all over the Empire (see Empire Map). It was the usual policy of the army to recruit auxiliary units from provinces that had been conquered by Rome, or from her allies. Occassionally, auxilia were recruited from citizens of the Empire, and this is clearly shown by the large number of Voluntariorum C.R units recruited in Italy.

The following tables provide access to each unit and the province from which it was recruited and where it was stationed. It would appear that on occassion different units have the same name. Also, that sometimes units were split up and sent to different provinces. for example:

1. On occassion different units appear to have the same name.

2. Units were sometimes divided and sent to different places.

3. Sometimes different types of unit have the same general title e.g. I Cohort Hispanorum, I Alae Hispanorum, I Cohort Hispanorum Equitata.
