Research in the National Archives
There are many records in the National Archives at Kew that can give a fuller picture of the lives of your ancestors.
If your ancestor was
a soldier
an airman
a seaman in the Royal Navy or merchant navy
a Royal Marine
a worker in the naval dockyards
a railway worker
an excise or customs officer or coastguard
a lawyer
a policeman in the Metropolitan Police or Royal Irish Constabulary
a criminal or prisoner
the National Archives could have records to help.
Other records that might be useful include
Chancery records concerning disputes over inheritance, land ownership etc
tax records eg Hearth Tax, death duties
pre-1858 probate records
post-1858 divorce records
business and bankruptcy records
poor law union correspondence files
naturalisation records
