Scrumpy Suppliers

Some Recommended Cider Mills

Listed alphabetically below are some scrumpy suppliers I have particularly enjoyed finding and visiting. I've enjoyed even more tasting, buying and drinking their products! The comments I've included apply to the draught cider. I've only included a small number of suppliers to start with but hopefully I'll get time to add more in future. If you know of any particularly good 'uns not on the list please email me with the details. My intention is to gradually build up a list of recommended cider producers with directions and other information, such as the range of ciders on offer, prices, etc., for the benefit of cider drinkers. So if you have any recommendations for new additions, or can provide up to date information (prices, etc.), or spot any errors which you'd like me to correct, I'd be glad to hear from you. I'm particularly interested in hearing about any producers not in CAMRA's Good Cider Guide. So, don't delay - email me today!

Sweetness: D=Dry, M=Medium, S=Sweet. Most real cider is fermented to dryness and then sweetened afterwards - although there are some exceptions where the cider is naturally sweet. Some producers only sell Sweet and Dry cider but allow you to taste and then mix the two in any proportion you like. Many will happily do this anyway even if they sell medium cider - for example, many will sell a mixture of medium and dry to make a medium dry blend. It's a good idea to taste the cider before buying, as different ciders have different levels of sweetness or dryness. For example, I find some medium ciders about right for my taste, whereas others are too sweet and I prefer the dry. So, try before you buy - that's part of the fun, anyway!

I've attempted to give directions to the cider mills - in some cases this isn't easy, even though I've been to them all myself! If you get lost, please don't blame me but persevere until you find it - then when you get back email me with any corrections! I've given approximate OS grid references where I can - again, these aren't always correct, as it's sometimes difficult to pinpoint the cider mills on the map, especially if you're doing it from memory. Again please email me if you can correct any that are wrong.

Note: Suppliers marked New are new additions to the list - this doesn't mean they're new to making cider!

Update March 2002: John Tymko's Cowhill Cider has ceased cidermaking - a sad loss to scrumpophiles in the Bristol and South Gloucestershire area.

Other ciders worth trying

Another cidermaker with excellent products you may want to try:

The English Farm Cider Centre

Although not a cider producer, a place well worth a visit if you're in the area is the English Farm Cider Centre, at Middle Farm, Firle, near Lewes in Sussex. This has what must be the biggest range of draught ciders under the same roof to be found anywhere. Well over a hundred ciders (maybe even 200) from all over the country can be tasted and bought there. The proprietor (John) is very friendly and knowledgeable, and a real cider enthusiast. Understandably (allowing for transport costs, etc.), not all the ciders are as cheap here as they are when bought direct from the producer, but prices are pretty reasonable nonetheless. Small quantities can be bought in 1 or 2 pint plastic containers. He also sells local draught real ale. On the same site is a farm shop with a good range of excellent cheeses, fruit & veg, chutneys, jams, and other stuff like that. Directions: on north side of A27 Lewes - Eastbourne road between Firle and Selmeston.
See the English Farm Cider Centre Web Page for further details.
