UBERERNST
Uberernst is a
small town located in the bottom left hand corner of Bavaria. It started as a
farming village, which it has remained, until the coming of the railway in1889.
The line was not built for the good of the villagers, but to enable the famous
monarch, King Ludwig, easy access to one of his favourite hunting lodges.
However, as in many cases, hard on the heels of the railway came industry, or
in this case two industries, the saw mill being the first, floowed by the flour
mill which uses the railway to bring in it's grain and take out it's flour.
During the mid 1920s the Army came to Uberernst, taking over a disused farm and turning
it into an officers training camp. Whilst not too popular with the locals, it
did bring about a fine Bier Halle and numerous other small business, all of
which augured well for the railway as it has a thriving goods depot and regular
passenger traffic.
The layout was constructed by club member Ken Harling during the late
1992/early 1993, but sadly Ken died suddenly in November 1993. At the time of
his death he was in the process of completing an additional board (the end
board with turntable), but regretfully never quite managed to finish it. He
gratefully bequest the layout to the Club, together with stock, and club
members have completed the layout to the best of their knowledge of what Ken
had set out to achieve.
