Body and Soul

This is a remarkably assured debut, and was the album that made me realize that here was someone worth following...someone with genuine talent. It is also fairly shrewd, using Jenny’s connections with INXS to their fullest, and deliberately appealing to the bands fan base, especially in the wonderfully chunky title track, and You’re Gonna Get Hurt. Elsewhere there is much to admire from the beautiful Neil Finn song, You I Know to Lighthearted.

Interestingly, a number of the album’s lesser songs hit the spot nicely, and I am particularly fond of the back to back corkers Pass it over (with its very 80s synth), and the exuberant Animal Magnetism. Any minus marks? Well, Jenny had clearly not yet found her confidence in her lyric writing, or in her singing, and her vocal performances, here, are just a touch bland. Perhaps it was her years as a backing-vocalist. By Shiver, she had found her own voice.
