Driving in London
Driving in London can be diffi cult, but there is a route to the St Katharine’s area which avoids the Congestion Charge Zone which we can provide on application.
Any individual or institution in the European Economic Area that holds a valid Blue Badge is eligible to register for a 100 per cent discount on the London Congestion Charge, even if you don’t own a vehicle or drive.
You can register up to two vehicles that you would normally use to travel within the charging zone. This could be your own vehicle, or one you travel in. Registration can be made through tfl ’s website, in the discounts and exemptions section.
Public Parking is available nearby in Thomas More Square Car Park, operated by NCP, at a cost of £12 per day ( November 2009 price). NCP do not offer disabled parking spaces. City Quay Car Park has a short stay car park in St Katharine’s Way which offers disabled spaces at £1.50 per hour, but long-stay is not permitted.
London Black Cabs
(can be other colours! but their shape is unmistakeable)
Black cabs can be hailed anywhere, so long as their taxi sign is lit up, which shows they are available for hire. They are legally obliged to accept fares that are up to 12 miles or will take less than an hour. There are designated taxi ranks at prominent London sites and train stations.
All of London’s famous black cabs are wheelchair accessible, and most have a selection, if not all, of the following extra features:
* Ramps * Swivel seat * Intermediate step * Seat sight patches * Large coloured grab handles * Intercom * Induction loop * Carry assistance dogs at no extra charge
Licensed Private Hire Vehicles
Private hire covers a wide range of services, from local minicab companies to chauffeur driven limousines.
Private hire vehicles and minicabs must be booked at an office, by telephone or email. Reputable, licensed minicab companies can offer a cheaper alternative to the black cab. While their fares are generally reasonable, they are not on a meter, instead you should ask how much the trip will cost when you make a booking.
If you want to book a private hire vehicle or minicab by telephone then most tourist organisations will have a list of reputable licensed operators. You will also find minicab offices on most high streets.
All licensed private hire vehicles have a distinctive Transport for London licence disc in the front and rear windscreen. Call Transport for London on +44 (0)20 7222 1234 for telephone numbers for licensed operators or to check that an operator is licensed.
Licensed Private Hire Vehicles
Accessibility A wide range of cars are used as private hire vehicles and when you make a booking you should check with the operator whether their vehicles meet your accessibility requirements.
Private hire vehicles carry assistance dogs at no extra charge.
