Terrain
High, exposed moorland, except for ½ mile in forest.
Surface
½ mile on road (at the start), 1½ miles on tracks, the rest on indistinct paths, or over pathless, sometimes tussocky grassland. A little rocky ground round Carn Owen and Plynlimon (Pumlumon) summit.
Control points and Marshalling
There will be eight control points:
1. Where path leaves forest (inside forest fence), grid ref. 739864
2. Carn Owen (cairn) 733883
3. Drosgol summit (cairn) 759878
4. Afon Llechwedd Mawr (south bank) 765888 manned
5. Banc Llechwedd Mawr summit (cairn) 775898
6. Hengwm footbridge (north end) 785892 manned
7. Pen Pumlumon Fawr (trig pillar) 790870
8. Y Garn (cairn) 775852
All control points will be marked by orienteering-style red-and-white kites, next to which punches will be hung on canes. Runners will carry control cards, and at each control point should punch the appropriate box on the card (i.e. box 1 at control point 1, etc.) to verify their visit. Lost card or missing punches = disqualification!
Control points 4 and 6 will also be manned. Runners' numbers and intermediate times will be recorded, for publication in the results, but mainly as a safety check; please help the marshals by shouting out the race number written on your control card. And don't forget to punch your card as well.
Safety
Rās Nant y Moch is a long, gruelling fell race in remote upland terrain, and the ability to navigate confidently with map and compass is essential.
Runners will be required to carry the following equipment:
Whatever the weather on the day, and no matter how good the forecast may be, DO NOT COME TO THE RACE UNLESS YOU HAVE ALL THESE ITEMS WITH YOU. All entrants will receive, with their control card, a form clearly setting out equipment and other requirements stipulated in these race details. This form must be completed and signed, and handed in at the start with the control card stub.
Map: Ordnance Survey Explorer 1:25,000 sheet 213 (preferred) or Landranger 1:50,000 sheet 135. A suitable map can be ordered by runners who pre-enter. A limited number of maps will be on sale on the day, but please pre-enter if you want to be sure of getting one.
River crossing: Afon Llechwedd Mawr (the river between Drosgol and Banc Llechwedd Mawr) is difficult to cross when in spate. A safety rope will be installed for the race, close to the manned control point 4, which will be made as obvious as possible to runners descending Drosgol. Don't forget to punch your card before crossing the stream!
Dogs
Dogs may not accompany runners on the race.
