Venue

Pumlumon, Ceredigion, Mid Wales.

If you haven't been before, please allow ½ hour longer to get here than you thought!

Registration, start and finish will be at the junction between the unfenced minor road to Maesnant (near the eastern shore of Nant-y-moch reservoir) and a rough track leading to Llyn Llygad Rheidol. Grid reference SN 768 873.

Car parking will be along the roadside verge, and you may have to park some distance from registration/start. Please make sure you allow enough time, especially if you are entering on the day.

There are no toilet facilities at this venue. Please use the public conveniences in Ponterwyd or Talybont on your way to the race.

Start time

12 noon.

Route finding

The route will be unmarked, and the middle 2½ mile section is not on well-defined paths. Navigational skills are essential to find the checkpoints, especially if there is mist on the higher ground. Local knowledge would be helpful.

Terrain

Pumlumon is remote, high hill country, with no shelter. The race starts at 1150' altitude, and takes in Pen Pumlumon Fawr, highest point in the Cambrian Mountains at 2468'.

Surface

The first 2¼ miles and the last ¾ mile are on a rough vehicle track. The rest is rough grassland (some small paths), scattered with crags and rocks, which can easily be bypassed.

Control points and Marshalling

There will be five control points:

1. Llyn Llygad Rheidol dam, east end, grid ref. 792879
2. Cairn on un-named summit, 727m, grid ref. 799872
3. Pen Pumlumon Fawr (trig pillar) 790870
4. Pumlumon Bach (east summit) 789874
5. Pumlumon Bach (west summit) 787874

All control points will be marked by orienteering-style red-and-white kites, next to which punches will be hung on canes. Runners will carry control cards, and at each control point should punch the appropriate box on the card (i.e. box 1 at control point 1, etc.) to verify their visit. Lost card or missing punches = disqualification!

Control point 3 will also be manned. Runners' numbers and intermediate times will be recorded, for publication in the results, but mainly as a safety check; please help the marshal by shouting out the race number written on your control card. And don't forget to punch your card as well.

You must report to the Finish, even if you retire.

Fences

Don't cross any fences! It isn't necessary, and if you do, you will go on land we haven't asked permission to cross, and may spoil our relationship with local landowners, and our plans for future races. The race only goes near one fence, which runs between control points 2 and 3; you must keep on the north side of this fence.

Safety

Please read the Welsh Fell Runners' Association Safety Notice.

Runners may be required to carry/wear (at least) the following equipment:

  1. Map (see below)
  2. Compass
  3. Whistle
  4. Wind and waterproof top i.e. cagoule
  5. Wind and waterproof overtrousers
  6. Other clothing appropriate to the weather conditions

If conditions and the forecast are good, the organiser may dispense with the requirements for items 5 and 6; the requirements will be announced during the pre-race briefing at 11.50am, and anyone who fails to carry/wear the minimum kit requirement will be disqualified. The organiser's decision is final, and your kit will be checked.

Whatever the weather on the day, and no matter how good the forecast may be, DO NOT COME TO THE RACE UNLESS YOU HAVE ALL SIX ITEMS WITH YOU.

Retirement

If you retire, please tell a radio marshal (there will be one at each control point) as soon as possible if there is one convenient, as well as reporting to the finish.

Map

The whole route is covered by Ordnance Survey Explorer 1:25,000 sheet 213 and Landranger 1:50,000 sheet 135.

It is also covered by a very detailed orienteering map (as used on this website to show the race route) which can be supplied in advance in electronic form only.

A limited number of paper maps will be on sale on the day, but please book one by contacting the organiser if you want to be sure of getting one.

Dogs

Dogs may not accompany runners on the race.
