1910 "The show of Orpingtons and Plymouth Rocks was the best that has ever been seen at the “Royal”. The classes for Buff, Black and White Orpingtons were exceptionally well patronised, while the exhibits for Spangled and Jubilee were of good quality, but not large in numbers. Mr Wilkinson [judge] considered this the best show (as far as Orpingtons and Plymouth Rocks went) that he had ever seen at the Royal Agricultural Society’s show, and both in numbers and quality they were by far the best he had ever seen at any show at the time of year”
Royal Agricultural Society Journal

Milton also won prizes in the International Poultry Show held in November 1909 at Crystal Palace, and the Dairy Show held in October 1910 at the Royal Agricultural Hall in Islington.
However, there is no evidence of him entering any shows before or after these two years, so it seems to have been a passing fancy.

HORSE RACING

“,,if in doubt where to find him, the safest thing, if a meeting was on, was to wire the Subscription Rooms, Newmarket”

Milton owned many racehorses. The list below shows that I have traced so far (it is by no means complete).
His horses were trained by Lord George Dundas (later Marquis of Zetland) in Newmarket.
His colours were light blue, yellow belt & crimson cap.

PIGEON RACING

President of the Reading & District Premier Flying Club.

Member of the National Flying Club.

Member of the Specialist Club, the Reading Racing Club.

President of Reading Specialist Flying Club.

Wreath sent to his funeral by Reading North Road Flying Club.

Loft manager was Mr A Burge (Dick?)

June 18 1932 - his pigeon won 6th Berks, Bucks & Oxon Federation of Pigeon Clubs race from Nantes in France (300 miles) to Reading from a total of 637 birds. His velocity was 1003 yards per minute.

"In 1930 he [Milton] presented Reading Specialist Flying Club with a solid gold cup for competition. The race was from Bordeaux, Mr. Bode's favourite resort, and 40 of Berkshire's picked pigeons were entered for the event. Mr Bode pleased everybody by winning the race himself and putting up the best performance of his pigeon racing career. It was his ambition to win the Grand National race from Spain - the most coveted honour - but luck was not with him."

"Every club in Reading can testify to Mr Bode's generosity. If a cup was wanted it was generally he who came to the rescue. His lofts at Cliffe House were the home of some of the finest pigeons in the world... Many a young fancier in Reading has been started on the road of success by the gift of a pair of racers from Mr. Bode. He had often been beaten by birds he had given to other fanciers, but to see them win gave him pleasure."

ORCHID/CARNATION GROWING

Milton was a member of the British Carnation Society in the last few years of his life. He won prizes in National Chrysanthemum Society shows.
