The idea originally started out as
two teams competing with each other in gardens that were side by
side - with someone seated like an umpire at a tennis match
keeping order over both teams.
Unfortunately (or fortunately in
this case) the Umpire in question was named Alan Titchmarsh - he
couldn't sit still and kept leaping into action and ended up
giving both teams a helping hand.
In those early days Tommy Walsh
was polite and very business like, Charlie Dimmock wore a bra and
looked like a librarian and Alan Titchmarsh hadn't really
discovered his style of mayhem.
Then came a few changes to the
format, they lost the game show aspect and concentrated on the
garden makeover. The team then gelled together until you
have what's known today as Ground Force.
The basic premise of the show
called for a team of gardeners and hard landscapers to be called
in by someone (usually a relative to someone living at that
address) to 'makeover' their garden as a surprise for their
husband/wife/partner/etc in two days and keep it a total secret
until the job was completed.
