Watford Open 7th September 2005

Already firmly established as one of Britain's finest athletics prospects Martyn Rooney, Croydon Harriers World Championships 4x400m relay runner, produced a timely reminder at the Watford Open Floodlit meeting last Wednesday of his long-term 800m aspirations.

An enthralling run unraveled, with Rooney always well in touch with the strong pace set by leaders. He passed the bell in just outside 54sec, before challenging hard down the home straight to settle for a worthy third in a first class clocking of 1:50.55.

U17 George Thatcher gave himself rather too much to do and had to work hard on the second lap for his 2:00.75 clocking while improving senior Robbie McIntyre did well to run 2:01.59.

Surrey/Sussex Multi event Championships 10-11 September 2005 Crawley

Thatcher, plus U15s Daisy Collingridge and Ben Robson, traveled to Crawley for the multi-event championships.

Woodcote High pupil Ben achieved personal bests in all five disciplines and set a new club record of 2,364 points, earning a silver medal slot. His five fine performances were, long jump 5.19m, 80m hurdles 13.64sec, shot 9.27m, high jump 1.48m and 800m 2:10.68.

Daisy, Croydon High School scholar, set three PBs before her final 800m sealed her a gold medal by two points. She achieved PBs in the high jump, 1:50m; the 75m hurdles, 13.75sec and the shot put, 7.15m.

George was to be similarly challenged to guarantee gold but sealed first place after his final event, the 1,500m. He scored 763 points and won by four points.

World Masters Results - Sans Sebastian Spain Aug 2005

Six Croydon Harriers enthusiasts traveled to the Veteran World Championships in Spain at their own expense and did themselves and the club great credit.

M35 Andy Del Nevo was in top form, and ran two PBs in the 1500m topped by a 4:22.7 clocking for ninth in the final

Norwich Union British Grand Prix Sheffield 21st August 2005

Just one week after strenuous and impressive World Championship athletics action in Helsinki, Croydon Harriers one-lap specialists, Donna Fraser and young Martyn Rooney were back in the fray in front of a large and appreciative Grand Prix audience at the Don Valley Stadium.

Both local athletes contested the specialty 400m facing high-class fields. In fact for Martyn it was the first time that he faced a field, including Britain's number one Tim Benjamin, all with faster times than his.

Well received by the crowd, Rooney, in the tough eighth lane, set about his task with a vengeance, and was well placed at 200m, but the early pace told, and his more experienced rivals eased ahead to leave him eighth in a respectable 47.08sec, his third fastest time.

Donna Fraser maybe went off too fast too fast and slowed in the last 100m to a seventh after a competitive first 300m against favourites World and Olympic champion Tonique Williams-Darling and America's Sanya Richards. Donna finished in a time of 52.28secs.

Rosenheim Final Kingston 17th August 2005

Croydon Harriers Eastern Division Champions midweek team struck a 14-year high when they finished second in the challenge for the coveted Rosenheim League Plate.

The team did so well that they had more individual winners than the victors Kingston and Polytechnic Harriers, who scored 81 points to Croydon's 76, with Herne Hill a very close third on 73.

Team manager Andy Del Nevo deployed his forces with great efficiency and they rose to their task admirably.

Pole vaulter Tom Crawford was outstanding with his winning 4.00m clearance and Robbie Powell, another U20 showed no loss of competitiveness following a holiday, when he romped home to win the 800m by 4sec in 2:04.4. George Thatcher tackled his 400m with great determination and won well in 51.4sec., a time which would have won him a place in the national semi finals the previous week.

The club's other winner was consistent middle distance man Matt Jones who dominated the 3000m to come home well clear in 8:56.3.

Six solid third places set the team up well, and with alittle more luck, Croydon might have been overall champions. Young sprint enthusiast Darren Wollen featured in three, in the 100m, 200m and the 4x200m relay.

Harriers Finish Just Short

Croydon Harriers come agonisingly close to beating their Surrey League placing set last of 16th, but ultimately were denied despite their valiant efforts.

The seven strong Harriers team finished ahead of their main rivals for a top 15 position, but couldn’t dislodge them in the overall points classification.

However, good news for the Harriers came in the form of Colin Oxlade (62nd, 18:20) and Keith Brown (100th, 19:43).

Both of them represent Southern Counties Veterans Athletics Club and finished 2nd and 3rd for them respectively, which bodes well ahead of the cross-country season.

Terry Lapins was the club’s third counter, in yet another personal best time of 20:56 to finish in 128th.

The first of the club’s non-scorers was Norman Hemming who crossed the line 139th and 6tth for SCVAC in 21:25.

Four minutes later Matthew Kiernan (193rd, 25:22) sprinted home, bringing with him an under the weather Ashley George (194th, 25:29).

Team Manager Mike Caudwell rounded off the Harriers team in 26:54 for a creditable 12th in the V60 age group and 201st out of the 217 finishers.

Last year, Croydon finished 16th with 53points, this year they ended just one place below that in tied 17th out of the 25 participating clubs.

World Championships Helsinki 6th-14th August 2005

Both the hugely experienced Donna Fraser and new boy' Martyn Rooney rounded off Croydon's involvement in the Helsinki World Athletic Championships in outstanding fashion in their respective 4x400m races.

Young Croydon Harrier Rooney, from Thornton Heath, a late addition to the team following his medal-winning success in last month's European U20 Championships, found himself in at the deep end when the team for the heats was announced.

He was totally unfazed by the magnitude of the occasion, running an astonishing 44.9sec second leg of the relay for the Great Britain team, which qualified comfortably with a win. He did so well he was selected for the team in the final and what a memorable race it turned out to be.

Receiving the baton from individual 400m finalist Tim Benjamin, Rooney was immediately overhauled by two world-class rivals but stuck to his task brilliantly, running his fastest ever leg of 44.8sec, to keep the team well in touch in fourth.

Robert Tobin and Malachai Davis were similarly inspired and the team came home a frustrating but magnificent fourth in Great Britain's sixth fastest time of 2min 58.82sec.

Rooney revelled in the experience. "It was a job well done," he said, "but the other three were gutted at so narrowly missing out on a medal."

The former John Fisher School student who shared a room with another British hopeful, sprinter Craig Pickering, capitalised on the whole games experience, and never shy, struck up conversations with several athletic legends.

He found American 100m sprinter and Olympic medallist Maurice Greene "a very nice, cheery, normal chap".

He also spoke to Russian middle distance icon Yuri Borzakovsky through an interpreter and, much to the envy of many, chatted with eye-catching world record pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva, Swedish high jump gold medallist Kajsa Bergqvist and the nation's favourite Paula Radcliffe after her golden marathon run.

Croydon club colleague, Olympian Donna Fraser, disappointed after her lacklustre individual runs came good in the women's 4x400m with a solid second leg in the heat to help GB qualify for the final.

Things were even better in the final when she clearly found the gear missing earlier to clock the fastest leg of 50.9sec to keep the team on its way to third place and an oh, so precious set of bronze medals. Their time of 3min 24.44sec was a season's best.

During a TV interview, a thrilled Donna, smiling more broadly than ever, said: "It's been a long time coming and we've finally got on the rostrum; the relay has been a great experience."

AAA U15/U17 Championships 13-14th August Birmingham

A small, but select group of young Croydon Harriers went to Birmingham for the championships and produced several good performances.

These came from Erasmus Ntim-Dwewo who took fifth place in the shot while Kayleigh Ferguson ran a personal best of 12.1sec in the U17 80m hurdles heats.

George Thatcher and Laurence Dight both ran well in the 400m heats but did not progress with times of 51.6sec and 51.9sec. Laurence also ran 23.5sec in his 200m heat.

National Young Athletes League, Newham, 31st July 2005

The boys and girls in the Croydon Harriers Young Athletes team, produced the club's performance of a lifetime to clinch promotion to the Premier league in their final match at Newham on Sunday, writes Mike Fleet.

Their task was simple: the home team, third placed Cambridge Harriers, had to be beaten and the admirable young Croydon athletes contested every point they could, and came out clear winners by over 30 points.

Most appropriately, boys captain Laurence Dight, making his final appearance for the team before moving up an age group, won the track athlete of the match award for his fine 100m win in 11.3sec. He also took the 200m in 23.2sec and anchored both relays to victory.

On a day when points chasing was paramount the Croydon boys and girls turned up trumps, hurdlers fell, got to their feet and finished, and seemingly seriously injured runners reappeared to win races. Javelin thrower Richmond Baah added an unfamiliar long jump to his specialist winning 46.90m throw, winning high jumper Tsidi Dagadu 1.85m, replaced the exhausted Jon Povey with two track firsts and a second, in the long relay, and two or three brave youngsters made their debuts in a baptism of fire'. It was a great and rewarding experience for everyone.

More then 30 PBs were set by these enthusiastic youngsters who will surely make their presence felt next season, when the club rightfully returns to the NYAL Southern Premier League

Rosenheim League Tooting July 27th

Croydon Harriers midweek league athletes to win their final Rosenheim League match at Tooting to take the Eastern Division title and win a Plate Final place on Wednesday, August 17.

Delighted team manager Andy del Nevo congratulated his squad on their reliability and subsequent success.

Croydon beat off a strong Herne Hill challenge by six vital points, with Hercules Wimbledon third, Serpentine fourth, Striders of Croydon fifth and South London Harriers sixth.

Robbie McIntyre produced a fine solo 800m to win with a new Pb of 1:59.7 and George Thatcher won the 400m in 54.0sec. Javelin thrower Peter Robert won at 34.6m, and the 4x200m team of Dan X Ho, George Thatcher, Robbie McIntyre and Darren Wollen clocked 1:37.1 for a valuable second place

Martin Rooney after his unlucky English schools withdrawal eased through his heat for an untroubled win in 47.53sec. Later the same day he impressed with a sprightly semi final win in 46.57sec.

The next day he lined up on a chilly damp evening for the final, with the Croatian number one drawn outside. An enthralling race ensued with the favourite throwing down the gauntlet from the gun. Rooney never let him off the hook and may even have been fractionally ahead with 100m to go, but the powerful Zeljco Vincek, a year older hung on to his lead to win in 46.14sec, with Rooney a worthy second in 46.56sec.

Rested from the 4x400m heats, Rooney ran the race of his life in the final.

Receiving the baton in a challenging second behind the Russians, but the Russian anchorman showed his displeasure with an extended elbow. Rooney shrewdly backed off in the third 100m, and struck again decisively to win five metres clear registering an amazing split time of 45.27sec.

National Young Athletes League, Sutton Arena, 17th July 2005

Croydon Harriers Young Athletes rose to the occasion on Sunday at Sutton Arena, after their Southern Division One match had been transferred due to dangerous facilities at the Croydon Arena.

Needing nothing but a big win to enhance their promotion chances, the Croydon boys and girls achieved just that, scoring 435 points, by far their best of the season, to finish first of the four clubs. The other team scores were, Lewes 318, South London 289, and Southend 285.

With league leaders Hearts Phoenix beating Cambridge Harriers, the young Croydon Harriers move into second place for the first time this season and look well set for a return to the Premier Division.

Several newcomers shone on their debuts, with U17 javelin thrower Richmond Baah standing out with his fine winning distance of 56.80m which also won him the coveted field events athlete of the match award.

Jonathan Povey also impressed, tackling the opening boys' track event, the testing 400m hurdles, for the first time. He won the B string, which with Jermane Beckford's A win, gave the club an inspirational early clean sweep.

In the U15 long jump Omar Dixon was very near his bronze medal-winning English Schools best when he won the U15 long jump with a very creditable 5.95m leap.

The contribution of the teams U13s was especially encouraging too, with five event maximums and two relay victories to their name.

Most impressive here was the young girls' clean sweep of the sprints with A string 75m winner Amber Stobbs being declared female track athlete of the match for her 10.4sec clocking. The male track athlete of the match came Croydon's way too, courtesy of Ehe Obiote, another of the club's fine crop of developing sprinters in the care of coach Paul Weston.

Obiote's U15 100m win in 11.6sec earned him the title. Again Croydon athletes took all sprints on offer. Adam Fletcher continued his astonishing 400m progress with a majestic run which brought him home more then three seconds ahead of the field in 54.0sec.

Whitgiftian Olly Newman, was another to make significant progress when he ran clear of his 800m rivals to win in 2:11.7.

He won the discus for good measure too at 25.35m, and won the B shot at 10.95m with only Croydon's A string Erasmus Ntim-Dwewo putting further at 13.78m. Together with Chris Frost, Joash Howard and Adam Fletcher he enjoyed a huge Croydon 4x400m win in 4:05.3.

Sophie Patterson was a double winner for the U15 girls with a well judged 300m run in 44.8sec and a high jump first. Girls' captain Kayleigh Ferguson went one better with three victories as well as contributing anchor leg to the winning relay quartet. She scored a comfortable 200m win in 27.7sec, dominated the 80m hurdles in 12.7sec, and took the long jump at 5.06m The U17 men benefited from the return of Luke Adekoa. He won both the shot and discus easily with efforts of 12.49m and 29.53m, but had to settle for second in the hammer with a 34.52m throw.

George Thatcher shone on the track with a splendid 400m/800m double. His times were 52.6sec and 2:04.9, the latter being achieved with a confident front run.

Anton Denny-Brown pluckily scrambled to his feet for a gutsy B 100m hurdles win, the outright winner being Jamel Beckford who clocked 15.2sec to win in fine style.

Team captain Laurence Dight sprinted to 200m victory in 23.3sec and backed up well in the B 400m in 53.3sec before rounding off the afternoon in classic Croydon style on the final leg in the 4x400m over which he prevailed with great determination by 0.3sec in 3.44.5.

High jumper Tsidi Dagadu 1.85m, and Michael Asamoah 1.80m took maximum points, and later Asamoah joined up with Gavin Roye, 6.23m, for a good long jump double, while Dagadu turned his attention to the triple jump share the spoils with A winner Trevor Okara for 13.28m.

AAA U20 Championships Bedford 3rd July 2005

The Martyn Rooney title-winning roller coaster moved up a gear at Bedford on Sunday, when he charged round lane eight in the AAA U20 final to win in an outstanding 46.44 seconds, writes Mike Fleet.

The 18-year-old romped home more than a second clear of Nestl Roundtree AC runner-up Richard Buck, who clocked 47.50sec.

Rooney's time, which trimmed .31sec from his previous best, elevated him to second in Europe for his age which bodes extremely well for his chances in the European U20 Championships to be staged in Kaunus, Lithuania, in two weeks time.

The previous day, the Croydon U20 international, had come close to missing his heat after horrendous traffic delayed his arrival at the Bedford International Stadium.

But after making it just on time, he coolly ran through to win his heat in 48.73, and reach the semi-finals.

Six hours later, Rooney guaranteed his final spot with a rather ragged run in 47.78sec. Despite a slow start, with four to qualify, he was never really at risk but ever aware of the requirement, and he duly stepped on the gas in the final stages to take a safe third

Young Athletes League , Ashford 26th June 2005

Croydon Harriers scored a convincing win over previously more highly placed Hastings at the Julie Rose International Stadium on Sunday, to haul themselves higher among the promotion challengers in the Southern Division 1 East table.

Croydon boys and girls are third, just 77 individual points behind Cambridge Harriers on goal difference, with Herts Phoenix 12, currently heading the table.

The Harriers tallied 393 points to beat hosts Ashford, 364, Hastings third on 322, and with Ilford fourth on 147.

The Harriers' boys on 224.5 points won their section handsomely, and the girls contributed very well too with 143.5 points for a solid second.

U15 Erasmus Ntim-Dwemo excelled and was deservedly nominated field events athlete of the match for his 13m shot put. This saw him ahead by the huge margin of 4.47m, with club colleague Otis Staples, next at 8.53m.

Ntim-Dwemo featured in two other Croydon doubles as winning B athlete behind Adam Fletcher who won discus with his 28.42 effort, and hammer winner Kariym Irving who hurled the heavy ball 24m. Irving also took a tight 80m hurdles on the dip in 13.2sec.

Croydon's total domination of the throws was completed in this section by javelin boys Jon Beaney 33.37m, and Fletcher 22.56m.

Emphasising his all-round ability, Warlingham School student Fletcher romped well clear to take the 400m in an equal pb of 55.2sec and also ran a sub 55sec anchor leg for the winning Croydon 4x400m relay squad.

Ben Staples stunned his rivals with a fast front run 1,500m in 4:40.8, ably backed up by Josh Alexander who won the B string.

Croydon Schools' year eight high jump champion Arthur Wade (Trinity), was outstanding among the newcomers. Wade, 12, picked up 11 precious points elsewhere, to give a clear indication of his versatility. The willing youngster, predominantly a jumper/sprinter, won the B 200m in 28.6sec, the B 1,500m in 6:04 and snatched a good second in the shot with his 6.83m put.

Rob Smallcombe registered two wins for eight points, taking the B 75m hurdles 3.5sec clear in 14.1sec, and in the B high jump at 1.20m.

The U13 hurdles was a Croydon one-two, with Andrew Ankrah, the outright winner in 13.3sec, and the club had good seconds in the 200m and shot thanks to Carl Shepard who ran 27.7sec, and to Jordan Staples whose best put was 7.56m.

Riddlesdown School runner, Seb Novell romped away for a fine solo win in the U13 1,500m, impressively clocking 5:21.9 for a 7.5sec advance on his pb.

To help the team effort, captain Lawrence Dight tackled both short sprints successfully to win in 11.4sec and 23.1 sec. He also put the shot 10.35m for second place and anchored the 4x100m relay to victory in 47.4sec. Croydon teams won six of the seven relays they contested.

In the field, vaulter Ryszard Buk continued his winning ways, overcoming blustery conditions to win with a 3.65m clearance and Michael Asamoah was similarly successful in the high jump at 1.80m.

Anton Denny-Brown snatched a valuable 100m hurdles win by a 10th in 14.9sec.

The girls were boosted by the arrival of five newcomers, most notably Isabelle Ballard, who in only her second match won the U15 discus with her 22.61m throw.

Sophie Patterson really rose to the occasion in the absence of regular Daisy Collingridge, running with great poise, to achieve clear wins in both the 300m and the 800m, virtually leading throughout in each, to record good times of 45.6sec and 2:32.9. She also placed second in the long jump with a leap of 4.09m.

Nikita Petty was in good form too well ahead in the javelin with her 27.43m throw, and produced another maximum with a B discus win at 15.95m.

Young Emma Campbell showed a good turn of speed again in the U13 75m with a winning 10.5sec dash and also in this age group Keri Davidson 13.9sec and Natasha Lawrence 16.5sec took the top eight points.

Dysart Dash 26th June 05

Croydon Continue to Persevere By Matthew Kiernan

Croydon Harriers kept their ambitions for the Surrey Road League alive, with an improvement on last year’s performance in the Dysart Dash 10K on Sunday.

The Harriers, looking to improve on the 16th place they finished in 2004, did their chances of doing so no harm at all despite having a weakened team, due to a track fixture the previous day.

Keith Brown maintained his 100% attendance record in the league, as well as his consistent form, leading Croydon home in 40:44 and snuck in the top 100 for 97th place in the process.

Sensible pacing was the order of the day for the club’s second runner home Terry Lapins. He was duly rewarded in the form of a new personal best time of 44:20 (178th), despite having run at a Southern Men’s League fixture just 24 hours earlier.

Rounding off the scoring trio was Mustafa Daued, who continues to improve after breaking his wrist earlier on in the year, crossing the line in 244th position in a time of 48:17.

There was also non-scoring support by Matthew Kiernan, who finished in 58:11 for 355th out of the 389 finishers.

The Harriers finished 20th out of the 23 teams participating, leaving them in with a chance of improving on last year’s position, as a result.

If any Croydon Harriers would like to compete in the remaining 2 Surrey League fixtures then ring team manager Mike Caudwell on 01737248239

Southern Mens League Norman Park June 25th 2005

A good team spirit and willingness to fill in was not quite enough at Norman Park where Croydon finished 3rd in the Southern Men's League. Robbie Powell showed good form in the 800m powering away from the front to win the 800m and added a less expected B-String Triple jump win before running in the 200m and both relays. Terry Lapins was again very busy winning the 110m Hurdles B-String in a PB and placing 2nd in the Steeplechase cutting 30 seconds of his pb. Peter Roberts covered many events his best place a win in the B string Pole Vault backing up Tom Crawford's classy A String win. Other wins came from Dan X-Ho with a comfortable win the B String Hurdles and Ian Wright in the B-String 800m. Dave Warren equaled his own club M45 Steeplechase Record after completing the 400m and Javelin.

National Young Athletes League Sutton Sun 5th June

Croydon Harriers young athletes scraped in uneasy winners in their National Young Athletes League Division One "home" match at Sutton Arena on Sunday, writes Mike Fleet.

Harriers eight point victory over Eastbourne, with Crawley third and Walton fourth, was too close for comfort, and revealed too many holes for a team hoping for promotion to the Premier Division.

Young Emma Campbell shone to capture an Athlete of the Match award with her outstanding grade one U13 girls 75m sprint victory in which she clocked 10.3 seconds.

Croydon's U15 boys, with five event maximums, plus another individual win were clearly the club's most successful section.

They would have done even better had misfortune not struck in the 200m, when well placed Ehe Obiote took a tumble just short of the tape. To his credit he got up and finished second in the B string.

In the 100m he ably backed up Dami Segun 12.2sec with a 12.4sec clocking for full points. Segun, 4.84m, and Derek Yeboah 4.74m, produced a dominant double in the long jump.

Croydon's throwers took all but one of the wins on offer. Erasmus Ntim Dwemoh winning the A shot with a 12.26m put, in addition to heading the B hammer at 22.80m, and the B discus with a 21.67m throw. The club's A winners were Kariym Irving, hammer, 24.54m, and Adam Fletcher, discus, 22.01m.

Team captain Laurence Dight produced powerful winning performances in the U17 200m and 400m, as well as anchoring both the Croydon relay teams to victory.

Beacon School student Clauduis Ricketts ran a near perfect 3,000m race to win with a new pb of 10:09.4, and Selsdon High scholar Mohamed Mohamed, made it a maximum with his win in 10:42.8.

Luke Adekoya and Rohan Samuel registered five wins and a strong second between them in the throws.

Daisy Collingridge shone for the U15 girls with a well executed 800m to win in 2:26.6. The Croydon High girl sped to a second victory in the 300m in 45.4sec. Sophie Patterson made these events a Croydon preserve with B wins in 2:36.4 and 46.2sec. These two athletes further revealed their versatility by taking useful second places in the high jump.

Nikita Rabby scored a clear javelin win with her 22.37m effort and Isabelle Ballard and Lauren Marshall dominated the shot with their 7.56m and 6.05m puts.

The Harriers U13s had their moments too, with six individual winners, plus firsts in both relays. The boys came up with creditable event doubles in both sprints, with the honours being shared four ways between Jordan Staples (13sec), Andrew Ankrah (14.8), Carl Sheppard (28.1) and Mat Jackson (29.1).

Ankrah 13.6sec and Jackson 14.1sec headed both 75m hurdles races and Jackson 4.30m and Shephard 4.23m did likewise in the long jump. They also romped away with the relay in 57.8sec Kerry Davidson ran 0.6sec clear from the 70m hurdles field in 13.5sec. The determined youngster also ran a strong second in the 800m in 2:51.3. The U13 girls ran in 0.6sec ahead in their relay, stopping the clock at 59.8sec.

Jorden Berkeley took a tight 100m in 13.1sec, with Rayanne Archer just 0.1sec slower winning the B race. Odette Campbell was in a class of her own in the 300m, which she coolly won in 44.9sec. Later, she and Becky Lobb scored maximum long jump points with leaps of 4.28m and 4.03m. Lobb also scored a solid discus second.

The U17 relay team rounded off their day with a win two seconds clear of Crawley in 53.0sec

South of England Junior Championships 28-29th May 2005 Portsmouth

Martyn Rooney, Croydon Harriers 18-year-old 400m phenomenon, retained his South of England title in sensational style at the windswept Mountbatten Track, Portsmouth, last Sunday.

Running in lane five, the rangy Rooney, despite a good start, found himself surprisingly a metre or two down to rash challenger Set Osho at the halfway point.

Remaining cool-headed, the Croydon athlete gathered himself well around the final turn and entered the home straight in close contention.

From there on in he moved into a new gear stretching smoothly away from his rivals to romp home some 15 metres clear, achieving an outstanding new championship record of 46.75sec.

This clipped 0.06sec off his personal best and Croydon Harriers U20 record set at the Loughborough International the previous week, and is a new Croydon Harriers men's record, eclipsing David McKenzie's 1990 mark of 46.79sec.

Rooney, top of the UK U20 rankings and fifth among the men, having beaten the entry standard twice, is now well placed to be selected for the European Junior Championships to be held in Lithuania in July.

Several other Croydon Harriers were in action at Portsmouth too. U17 vaulter Ryszard Buk found the gusty conditions tough but still managed to clear 3.50m for a creditable fourth.

Erasmus Akoto was well up to form in the U15 shot with a 13.25m putt, which earned him fifth place.

U20 hammer thrower Keleisha Smith was 10th with a 32.35m throw, U15 two-lapper Daisy Collingridge ran well for third in her heat in 2:26.32, but was first among the non-qualifiers.

U17 club captain Kayleigh Ferguson finished sixth in her 80m hurdles heat in 12.63sec U17 Laurence Dight and George Thatcher drawn in lanes seven and eight on day one, ran 53.15sec and 53.58sec U20 sprinter Darren Wollen ran two wind assisted pbs, but did not make the finals. He clocked 23.59sec in his 200m and ran the 100m in 11.79sec.

Joscelyn Hopeson and younger sister Twinelle, Archbishop Tenison's School, also shone.

Junior international sprinter Joscelyn snatched silver in the U20 200m in 24.09sec and came second in the 100m in 11.93sec and Twinelle was twice a medal winner too, in the U15 100m and 200m.

Loughborough International Athletics Match 22nd May

Croydon Harriers junior international 400m runner Martyn Rooney raced himself into the big time reckoning at the Loughborough International last Sunday.

Representing Great Britain U20s in a five-team match, the tall Thornton Heath athlete was unfazed by his outside lane draw in the 400m, and set about the challenge with a vengeance, A very good first bend saw him well-placed into the back straight, and responding well to pressure on the inside, the John Fisher student moved through with the leaders, and was ideally situated for an effective attack off the final turn.

Tobin struck strongly, but the Croydon Harrier matched him virtually stride for stride on the run in, and finished powerfully a stride or so back in a sensational lifetime best of 46.81 sec. This clocking extends the 18-year-old's lead at the head of the UK U20 rankings, and places him an impressive fifth among the men.

Two hours later, Rooney emphasised his first-class form with a fast 47.1sec opener for the GB U20 4x400m team, which led until the final 50 metres before being overhauled by the England men. Their outstanding time of 3:09.44, must put them in with a good chance for a European medal in Lithuania later in the summer Archbishop Tenison's ace sprinter Joscelyn Hopeson took a sharp second in an invitation 100m in 11.91sec (+2.0m/s wind), and later contributed an excellent opener for GB juniors in the 4x100m which. They won handsomely in 45.26sec.

Southern Women's League Kingsmeadow May 21st 2005

Southern Women's League Croydon Harriers women were at Kingsmeadow for their Southern League fixture where they continued their improvement.

Keleisha Smith 36.45m pb, and Jane Goatcher 19.16m, produced maximum points in the senior hammer and this duo only dropped one point in the shot with Keleisha A second at 8.49m.

Nassou Keita took the long jump at 4.46m. Kayleigh Ferguson had a comfortable 80m hurdles win in 13.6sec and took second in the 100m in 13.6sec with Nassou 0.1sec back, second of the B strings.

Daisy Collingridge, County U15 800m champion successfully tackled the 1,500m to win in 5:22.7, and also showed a fine turn of speed to take the 200m in 27.9sec Newcomer Nikita Petty excelled on her debut to take the U15 javelin with a throw of 25.77m, almost double that of the runner-up.

Southern Mens League Perivale May 21st 2005

Southern Men's League Meanwhile back in London, Rooney's Croydon club colleagues welcomed Scottish International Jon McCallum back after injury. They travelled to Perivale for their second Southern League match, in which their third place was less than hoped for, but still sees them in with a promotion shout.

The enthusiastic Chris King-led squad covered very well, producing two winners, five runners-up, and featured seven personal bests.

McCallum cruised to a safe and comfortable 1,500m win in 4:17.6 while Peter Roberts took the Discus with a 31.20m pb. Robbie McIntyre led for much of the 800m before having to settle for second in 2:04.1.

Surrey U17 400m bronze medallist George Thatcher came third in his 400m and produced a long jump personal best of 5.59m for second. Terry Lapins was second in the triple jump with a pb of 11.19m, and also tackled the high and low hurdles and the 3k steeplechase.

Surrey County Championships - Kingsmeadow

Croydon Harriers sprint and middle distance sensation Martyn Rooney notched an outstanding 400m/800m double in the Surrey athletics championships last weekend at Kingsmeadow.

Rooney, 18, stormed round his lap, extending the lead which he established in the first 100m, to win handsomely in 47.65sec, just short of the championship record.

Day two brought more success, when he tackled his 800m with clinical efficiency by tracking the early leader and getting smoothly ahead at the bell, striding strongly away to win by more than half a second with a stunning new personal best of 1:52.33.

Daisy Collingridge, 14, dominated the U15 800m with maturity which belied her years. Always in control, the Croydon High girl maintained a strong pace throughout, easing ahead confidently in the final 150m, to take the title in 2:25.45.

Fellow Harrier and member of the Mike Fleet training group, senior Robbie McIntyre, similarly advanced his bests over the same distances, coming fifth in his 800m in 2:01.54 and taking the 400m bronze in 50.53.

Also in the same squad George Thatcher recovered well from a slightly below par U17 800m on day one, sixth 2:07.52 (Ht 2:05.70), for third in the 400m in a 51.86sec pb.

Young sprint hurdler Kariym Irving clearly headed the U15 80m hurdles for a well merited gold medal in 13.23sec.

Five other sprinters in coach Paul Weston's care made the medal table too. U20 Emlyn Akoto snatched a high quality second in his hundred' with a sharp 11.02sec clocking, having run 11.04sec in his heat.

Pole vaulter Ryszard Buk excelled in the U17 event with a good series for gold, topping out at 3.80m The Harriers, who are currently training at Sutton Arena on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and at Trinity School on Tuesdays (U12s indoors) and on Thursdays, have a busy weekend coming up.

Young Athletes League St Albans 8th May 2005

Croydon Harriers young athletes made a very positive start in their Division One match at Westminster Lodge, St.Albans on Sunday.

Their enthusiastic 40-strong squad of boys and girls came back with a very creditable second place from the four-club match. Boys' captain Lawrence Dight led with distinction, winning the U17 400m in 53.5sec by a margin of 2.5 secs, and was also well clear in the 200m in 23.6sec and anchored his 4x400m squad to a comfortable victory.

All-round thrower Luke Adekoya netted maximum points from three throws, in the hammer, shot and discus, with the former showing him in a class of his own at 40.78m. He threw the shot 12.48m and despatched the discus 29.46m.

Newcomer Mohamed Mohamed made an exciting debut with wins in two of the toughest distances, the 3,000m and 1,500m steeplechase, taking the former in 10:35.4 and the latter in 5:36.7.

Jemal Beckford dipped effectively to take a tight 100m hurdles race in 15.2sec and Tsidi Dagadu dominated the high jump with a 1.75m clearance. Beckford made this a Croydon maximum with his 1.50m B string win.

Boy sprinters Dami Segun 24.9sec and Joash Howard 26.6sec scored the club's only double in the U15 200m .

The club's good result was achieved by solid input from all six sections, right down to the most recent 11-year-old recruits.

The girls contributed too, with captain Kayleigh Ferguson winning the U17 20m in 27.8sec and Odette Campbell running away with the 800m in 2:45.0. Daisy stood out for the U15s striding away strongly in 800m in 2:26.8. She sprinted to a grade one 300m second place in 45.0sec and took second in the high jump too, with a leap of 1.45m.

Croydon finished with a flourish in the relays, winning five out of the eight races.
