By Matthew Kiernan

Croydon Harriers began their Autumnal programme with an encouraging performance in the Surrey road relays on Saturday.

Although the senior team brought up the rear in the competition, it was the first time Croydon had fielded a complete relay side in four years.

Martin Rowe was the star performer of the day, completing the three-mile Wimbledon Park course in 17:42.

Ebbisham League @ Kinsgmeadow 5/8/07

By Matthew Kiernan

Croydon Harriers junior team missed out on the Ebbisham League title after finishing second best to a strong Herne Hill Harriers outfit on Sunday.

Croydon went into the title decider at Kingsmeadow in a strong position, narrowly ahead on points difference.

A series of injuries though, meant the Harriers had to settle for the runners up spot behind their south London rivals.

The plucky juniors still put up a good fight, notching a credible 12 victories on a blisteringly hot afternoon.

Amongst the winners, was U13 Faraz Rafi who won the 80m hurdles (14.6s), Discus (30.15m), High Jump (1.45m) and helped the 4x200m relay team to victory in 50.4s.

Another member of the relay team was U13 Matthew Sunday who impressed in his 200m win, clocking 26.0s.

London Mini-Marathon winner Elliot Veheary did well to equal his 1500m Personal best of 4.52.9, in less than ideal conditions.

Meanwhile U15 captain Scott Fanner bowed out of the junior ranks in style finishing 2nd in the 1500m (4:54.0) against a tough field, before helping the U15 relay team to 2nd place in 47.6s.

Southern Mens League @ Basingstoke 4/8/07

By Matthew Kiernan

Croydon Harriers senior mens team narrowly escaped relegation from Division two in their final Southern League match on Saturday at Basingstoke.

The Harriers, who have flirted with the drop zone all season, gained the 4th place they needed to maintain their league status.

In a tough final fixture, U17 Ehi Oboite produced a solid display of sprinting with a 2nd in the 100m (11.4s) and a 3rd place in the 200m (23.7s).

In the 400m, Darren Wollen finished 2nd clocking 52.0s, whilst Dave Symons was also a runner up in the 5000m in a time of 16:07.1.

Croydon will now look to re-build for next year, after finishing just one place above the six relegated clubs who face the drop to Division three.

Southern Mens League @ Portsmouth 14/7/07

By Matthew Kiernan

Croydon Harriers Senior Men’s team gave their survival chances a huge boost, with a 4th place finish at Portsmouth.

Croydon just edged 5th placed Epsom and Ewell Harriers by 3 points, largely thanks to some excellent sprinting and jumping.

Athlete of the Match Paul Ogun proved to be vital for the Harriers.

He scored victories in the Long Jump (6.36m), B-String Triple Jump (13.23m), 100m (11.4s) and anchored the 4x100m relay team home to a pulsating win in 45.5s.

Chuxx Onyia, provided superb support for Ogun, gaining invaluable wins in the Triple Jump (13.67m) and the B String Long Jump (6.07m).

More wins were found in the 200m with Oweka Wanaogho clocking 23.3s and in the B-String 100m with Ehi Obite crossing the line in 11.5s.

The Harriers, who have finished last in their previous two league fixtures, now lie two places above the drop zone.

Southern Women’s League Hastings 7th July

The Croydon Harriers women's team travelled to the coast for their fourth Southern League Division Three match on Saturday and won their own version of the Battle of Hastings'.

Shireen Irving, U15, was one of a number of bright performers, taking part in three events and a relay.

The debutante won the 800m in three minutes six seconds and came second in the 75m hurdles, as well as winning the discus with 16.75m throw.

The more experienced Nazarine Montgomery continued her string of mid-20m discus throws with a win at 26.09m.

At the opposite end of the age range V50 Jane Searle won the 400m in 70.9, while senior Gemma Hammond had a good day, too, with an A win in the discus at 26.24m, a first in the B shot at with a 7.15m effort plus a second in the javelin with a 23.00m throw.

Harriers' final total of 140 was enough to beat East Grinstead (125) and Paddock Wood (113) and claim first place.

The Winning Team

Rosenheim League Tooting Bec  4th  July

A frustratingly close match for second and third places in the six-club match saw Croydon miss out to Serpentine by two points, 47 to 46, with league leaders Herne Hill comfortable on 57.

The team, with its familiar blend of athletes across the age range, picked up two firsts, two seconds and three thirds. The wins went to Darren Wollen who headed the 100m in 11.4, and the irrepressible Terry Lapins, who won the 110m hurdles in 22.0. Wollen also took second in the 200m in 23.0 and anchored the 4x200m relay team into third place.

U17 Tim Bateman was Harriers' most eye-catching runner-up. He set himself up well for a personel best in the 800m, leading at the bell in 62 seconds. Although passed early in the second lap, he tagged his rival limpet-like, even closing in the final 50m to achieve his aim in 2:05.3, a mere three tenths of a second adrift of the winner.

The determined Bateman picked up more important points when he was near his 400m best, third in 56.0 and finally contributed to the Croydon third place in the 4x200m relay.

M50 hammer expert Chris King covered the two throws on offer with an 8.15m put for third in the shot, while his 18.73m discus effort took fourth.

Croydon women similarly situated both on the day and in the series, with Gemma Hammond taking second places in the shot and discus, her distances being 7.23m and 26.50m.

National Junior League Deangate 1st July 2007

Ogun and Meyers Jumping Startlets

By Matthew Kiernan

Paul Ogun and Charlotte Meyer were the stars for Croydon Harriers, as they battled to 6th place at the National Junior League.

Both succeeded in winning the Long Jump, with 18 year-old Ogun leaping to 6.45m and Wallington student Meyer jumping 4.67m.

Other positive results came from Richmond Baah in the Javelin (2nd, 44.20m) and U17 Kariym Irving in the Discus (2nd, 33.55m).

The Under 20 team fought hard throughout the day at Deangate, where the weather conditions varied from blazing sunshine to a monsoon.

Croydon’s performance ensures they remain 6th out of 8 in the league, with the final fixture coming at the end of July.

Ebbisham League Walton 1st July

Croydon Harriers' boys led from start to finish in their Ebbisham League Two, match at Walton last weekend.

The club's U13s were once again in stunning form, with multi-talented Trinity pupil Faraz Rafi towering above his rivals in both physique and performance.

He won three events and contributed to the Harriers record-breaking 4x200m relay.

He soared to a new high jump best of 1.55m which takes him to third for his age in UK. He did almost as well in the discus, moving up to fourth with an impressive 29.33m throw, a new Croydon Harriers record, and he also finished fourth in the shot put with a 10.48m effort.

Beacon schoolboy sprinter Josh Atille shone, too, with two very quick runs despite an adverse wind.

Nationally ranked first for the 100m and second equal over 200m, Atille was, not surprisingly, well clear in both at Stompond Lane.

His 100m win in 12.5 saw him eight-tenths of a second ahead and the margin stretched to 1.3 seconds when he won the 200m in 25.6.

Atille showed his versatility with a third win in the shot (7.57m).

Another top class U13 effort came from tigerish Elliott Veheary, who calmly controlled the 800m from the front to win in an excellent personal best of 2:22.9.

Jordan Maurice, 13, celebrated his selection to run in the English Schools Championships for Surrey with two smooth, high quality wins.

He was in a class of his own when he won his 800m from the front by more than four seconds in 2:10.4 and, later, he improved his 400m PB to 57.1, finishing a full second clear.

The U15 high jump interestingly saw Croydon athletes Jordan Staples (1.60m) and Harry Rogers (1.65m) head the field but, with only one 14-year-old allowed to score and Staples already declared, he won while Rogers jumped as a guest competitor.

Other notable Croydon winners were: U14 Aaron Bowers in the javelin (35.28m) and shot (8.76m), Elliott Safo in the long jump (5.24m) and 100m (12.7); U15 Kristian Wright in the long jump (5.29m) and Connie Atille in the 200m (27.6).

Nathan Yarde also impressed in the 100m, clocking 12.2.

Croydon athletes registered seven event doubles and won both 4x200m relays by more than 10 seconds The U13 relay team of Matt Sunday, Ethan Shakespeare-Richards, Faraz Rafi, and Josh Atille smashed the club record of 1:50.9 set in 1993 by 1.6 seconds, clocking 1:48.7.

The U15 ran 1:42.6 for their victory.

South of England Championships, 16-17th June Crystal Palace

Croydon Harriers' Olympian Donna Fraser caught the eye in the South of England Championships at Crystal Palace last weekend with a double medal-winning display.  The senior female of British sprinting shrugged off a back problem to claim the 100m silver in 11.80 seconds, before taking 200m gold the following day in 23.70.

Twinelle Hopeson, U17, showed that she could compete against older athletes when she finished fourth in the U20 200m in 25.11.

Three Croydon U20 athletes just missed out on medals. Triple jumper Chuxx Onnyia was possibly the unluckiest, falling out of the frame in the fourth round. His best effort was 14 .35m.  Javelin thrower Richmond Baah finished fourth with a 50.62m throw and high jumper Tsidi Dagadu also finished fourth with a 1.90m leap.

Ebbisham League,  17th June Kings Meadow

Croydon Harriers U13, U14 and U15 boys did well to take second of six in their opening match in Division One of this 10-club competition.

Distance runners Jacob Cross and Will Mercer both picked up useful points in the hurdles, and Joshua Haas and Mark Plackett did likewise in the high jump.

Cross ran a fast 800m in 2:44.3 for a well-merited second place.

The club's most successful event was the 1,500m, in which the U13 boys scored maximum points.

Elliott Veheary ran away from the A U13 field to win comfortably in 4:57.9, with Joshua Haas heading home the B race in 5:26.2.

U13 sprinter Ethan Shakespeare Richards had a good day, finishing second in the 100m in 13.4, second in the 200m (27.8) and first in long jump with a 4.44m jump.

David Mitchell, U15, was the best of the throwers, ably supported by U14 Aaron Bowers.

Mitchell won the discus at 29.44m, while Bowers, on his debut, was second in his section with a 22.02m throw.

In the 4x200 relays, the U13s took a solid second in 2:05.0 and the U15s just missed out on second when Epsom pipped them on the line, both clocking 1:44.9.

Big year: Martyn Rooney finished third

Big year: Martyn Rooney finished third

Martyn Rooney of Croydon Harriers made a successful return to the 400m fray at the Atletica Geneve meeting in Switzerland, finishing third in 46.02 seconds. The performance makes him fifth in the UK rankings and should clinch a place in the Great Britain European Cup 4x400m squad later this month. Rooney led at 250m, before being passed by David Gillick, who set an Irish record of 45.23 to win, with Andrew Steele second.

Donna Fraser clocked 53.70 at the weekend, her second fastest of the year, while sprinter James Dasaolu impressed in the 100m.

His winning 10.40 run at the Bedford International Games elevates him to 12th in the 2007 UK list, and is the second best ever time by a Croydon Harrier.

National Young Athletes League Copthall 4th  June 07

Twinelle Hopeson's thundering 300m run was the highlight on a weekend of variable results for Croydon Harriers.

The 16-year-old sprinter had the crowd on their feet when she stormed to her record breaking victory, finishing nearly two seconds ahead of her nearest rival.

Her 39.64 time won her the track athlete of the match award and set a new Croydon record, beating Michelle Pierre's time if 40.2, set 17 years ago.

It currently places her second in the UK rankings.

She also took the 200m in a dominant 25.15sec, and finally stormed a seemingly hopeless anchor leg in the 4x100m to snatch a sensational tied-second. Stephanie Braithwaite ran well too in the 200m with her B string win in 26.89sec The match was a really tough four-cornered encounter, which featured two of the country's strongest clubs - Shaftesbury Barnet and Harrow.

Hopeson's contribution helped Croydon to a respectable third, which sees them drop to sixth in the league table.

U17 all-rounder Kariym Irving was another young athlete in sparkling form.

He hurled his 1.50k discus 44.81m to win by more than 2m and eclipsed another record which had stood the test of time - Spencer Lees 44.36m mark set in 1988.

He also threw the hammer 34.36m for second place and earned a good third in the 100m hurdles 15.49sec.

Fellow U17 Lee Mclaughlin took a first and a second in the 200m and 100m with Grade 1 times of 22.48sec and 11.26sec. He also brought Croydon home with assurance in the 4x400m. Dami Segun helped the club to a maximum in the 200m with his 23.01sec B win.

Fast-improving Nick Spence won the testing U17 400m hurdles in 60.61sec.

Team captain Erasmus Ntim-Dwemo dominated the U17 shot with his 14.53m effort, while first year U17 Ned Quiney notched valuable a second in the vault at a personal best of 3.30m and high jump 1.75m PB. Tunde Amosu also 15, took a triple jump second with a grade 1 PB of 13.65m Nazarine Montgomery notched a win in U15 girls' discus with her 23.53m throw, and U17 Lauren Smithers won the hammer with a distance of 20.31m.

The U15 javelin saw the club's two throwers both win and achieve PBs David Mitchell 35.23m and Meshack Smith 35.16m were simply in a class of their own.

Faraz Rafi, U13, progressed in all his three individual events. He was well clear in the 75m hurdles in 12.88sec, and he headed the high jump at 1.43m and was second in the shot a 10.08. He also contributed to the winning 4x100m team.

Ethan Shakespeare -Richards, also U13, had earlier scored nine precious points with a first class 200m win in 26.81sec, a fighting 100m second in 13.11sec and a long jump Pb of a 4.56m for third.

Junior League 27th May 2007 Croydon Arena

Disappointingly thin on the ground for their Medway Division match at the Croydon Sports Arena on Sunday, Croydon Harriers finished a lowly sixth of eight teams.

But some local pride was salvaged thanks to the outstanding talent of junior international triple jumper Trevor Okoroafor, who won the male Athlete of the Match title with his astonishing 13.91m effort, achieved off a short seven stride approach.

Training partner Chuxx Onyia made it the only Croydon maximum with his winning B effort of 13.46m, the only other male National Grade One performance of the afternoon Two other fast developing Croydon talents, Paul Ogun and Richmond Baah, gave further hope for the future with winning displays.

Sprinter/jumper Ogun took the long jump with a personnel best of 6.36m, and fought well in a tight 100m for second place in 11.5.

Baah, still nursing a slight injury, went over 50m again in his first session with the 800g javelin, as he finished first, almost 10m clear A special word, too, for steeplechaser Claudius Ricketts, who celebrated his 17th birthday with third place in the 2k event, clocking 7:17.2.

The best result for Croydon's women came at the end, with the 4x100m relay squad of Georgia Gill, Stephanie Braithwaite, Odette Campbell and Kayleigh Ferguson challenging strongly with a good second in 52.2.

Earlier Campbell had finished third in her 400m in 59.7 and Ferguson took fourth place in the 100m in 13.6.

The importance of simply having a go could not have been more clearly evidenced, than by Miles Beswick, who turned up to cheer his colleagues, only to note team shortfalls and volunteer.

In borrowed kit, the hardly fit, Beswick scored 12 points, and kept Croydon clear of Bexley.

National Young Athletes League Croydon Arena Southern Premier 20th May 2007

Full Result (pdf)

Croydon Harriers Young athletes consolidated their Southern Premier Young Athletes League challenge with a second place finish in their second round match at the Croydon Sports Arena on Sunday.

The match was won comfortably by Enfield and Haringey who scored 446.5 points, with the hosts on 380.5, just easing away from Havering and Mayesbrook (364) and fourth placed Basildon (313).

Croydon athletes won 15 A string events, achieved five event maximums and notched 32 personal bests - as well as winning three of the relays.

The highlight of an absorbing afternoon was Lee McLaughlin's scorching 400m victory in a first class personal best of 49.70 seconds - enough to earn him the male track athlete of the match award.

Trinity School student Omar Dixon also shone at U17 level with a brace of National Grade One performances. He headed the long jump at 6.24m and took a well-deserved second in the 100m in 11.17.

Shot putter Erasmus Ntim-Dwemo was in a class of his own with a huge Grade One effort of 15.16m and Babatunde Amosa, who had earlier finshed second in the triple jump, won the high jump on count back at 1.60m.

Versatile Ned Quiney continued his rapid progress in the pole vault, advancing to 3.30m to win before 13-year-old middle-distance runner Jordan Maurice won the U15 800m in 2:11.16.

Jordan Staples (1.60m) and Harry Rogers (1.50m) headed the A and B high jumps and U13 Trinity athlete Faraz Rafi won the high jump (1.41m) and the 75m hurdles (13.30), before finishing second in the shot put (9.20m) London Mini Marathon winner, Shirley High's Elliot Veheary, controlled his 1,500m throughout to win in 4:52.46.

The Croydon girls continue to improve. U17 thrower Lauren Smithers shone with a hat-trick of wins in the hammer (21.58m), the shot (8.22m) and the javelin (18.64m).

Versatile U15 thrower Nazarine Montgomery was the girls' other winner in her specialist event, the discus, in which she threw 24.69m.

Sprinter Jessica Downs-Goessel was the club's highest placed U15 track athlete, finishing second in the 100m in 13.63.

Womens Souther League Richmond 19th May 2007

The Croydon women travelled to Richmond for their Southern League Division Three match and also finished third out of five. The team covered nearly all the events and achieved eight A and B wins.

Mens Southern League Eton 19th May 2007

The men travelled to the Thames Valley Athletics Centre in Eton and finished third out of five in their Division Two match.

George Thatcher was the pick of the performers, with wins in both the 400m and 800m with times of 50.4 seconds and 2:03.3, plus a second in the high jump and a thrilling anchor leg in the 4x400m, in which his sub 50-second run helped Croydon finish second.

With some key sprinters and jumpers missing Croydon struggled to put out a strong team across all events.  There was some great efforts in overcoming this difficulty.  Manny Nsudoh-Hall also had a good day contributing in the throws including wining the B Javelin and as will as winning the 110m Hurdles B- String.  Terry Lapins managed seven events both Hurdles the Steeple Chase and all the Jumps and the 4 x 100m.

His 800m win in a race which controlled well even in a tight finish produced a useful 1:58.2 clocking Croydon athletes won two of the other 400m titles up for grabs. U20 Odette Campbell moved through confidently in the latter stages to win in a PB of 58.82sec and u17 man Oweka Wanogho gave his all in lane 8 hanging, on for a hard earned gold in 52.32sec. Campbell also won 200m bronze in 26.72sec.

Star silver turn was sprinter Twinelle Hopeson who ran 12.53sec in the 100m and 25.30sec in her 200m. Other silvers were won by U13 Whitney Campbell 100m 14.47sec, U15 Nazarine Montgomery in the discus at 23.70m and Erasmus Ntim Dwemo with a good 14.45m put in the shot.

Croydon's bronze medallists were Teleisha Francis 100m 14.48sec and senior Terry Lapins who cleared 11.45m in the triple jump.

An outstanding performance which just missed a medal, came from U15 middle distance runner Jordan Maurice, still only 13, who clipped 5sec off his best with sparkling performance to clock 2:09.04 This earned the Wilson's schoolboy a national top 10 ranking.

Southern Men’s League Norman Park May 5th 2007

Croydon Harriers' men continued their winning return to Southern League Division Two on Saturday ay at Norman Park Bromley.

Their win against last season's eighth, 10th, 11th, and 14th placed teams in the 25 club division showed their intentions for the coming season, Harriers' were set on their way to victory by pole vaulters Ryszard Buk and Tom Crawford, who topped the event with 4.20m clearances.

A second in the A 400m Hurdles and a first in the B from Dan Xiao-Ho and Terry Lapins set the tone on the track.

James Dasaolu won a sharp 100m in 10.7 seconds, ably supported by Darren Wollen who took second in the B race.

Dasaolu lost out in the tightest of 200m finishes clocking a fine 21.9, as did the winner. Laurence Dight won the B race in 22.7.

Middle-distance man George Thatcher won the 800m with calm control throughout (1.59.00), having led from the gun and later won the 400m in 51.9 with Wollen clocking a personal best of 52.00 to come second in the B race.

Javelin thrower Richmond Baah, 17, won with his second 52m-plus effort, while his canny veteran colleague Manny Nsudoh-Hall made it a Croydon points maximum with his 43.14m throw.

Croydon athletes also took maximum points in the triple jump, thanks to Chuxx Onyia (13.39m) and Paul Ogun (12.19m) Distance man Dave Symons headed the 5,000m throughout to win comfortably in 15:54.6 The Harriers placed second in both relays. They missed out by a tenth in the 4x100m in 44.3, while George Thatcher's brought home the 4x400m team in 49.7, 0.7 seconds behind winners Enfield.
