East Surrey League Road Race

Croydon Harriers young athletes teams swept the board at West Ewell when they won both of their categories in the last East Surrey League event of the 2002/03 season.

The under-13s' two-mile race was won by Claudius Ricketts in 13min 27sec. The youngest squad member was Dan Hall who took eighth. Just 10 seconds later G Chrome led the B team in ninth with 15.41.

On the day the A team scored eight points, followed by Crawley AC A 20 and Croydon B who took third spot with 28.

Overall league positions: Croydon A with maximum 48 match points, Dorking A 32, Hercules A 30, Croydon B 24, Crawley A 11 and others trailing behind.

The under-15 and under-17 race saw U17 Robbie Powell forcing the pace right from the start, cruising home in a fast 12.07 for the two mile course. Powell also won the league's award for the best U15 or U17 runner of the season with 48 points.

Croydon's senior team had a disappointing end to a good season when holidays, injuries and sickness prevented their best athletes from taking part. New second claim member, Ray Marriot (M40), was the best for Croydon taking third in 22.55 behind two class runners in A Moses of Reigate Priory, first home in a sharp 21.43 and second Paul Haywood (Boxhill Racers) 22.25. Croydon's second finisher was Dave Warren (M40), in 28th timed at 26.24. The team's 89 points got them sixth team place.

Final League positions: Striders of Croydon 39, equal second: Ep-som & Ewell A and Boxhill Racers 38 each, Croydon Harriers A 36, Hercules Wimbledon A 33, Crawley AC A 32, equal seventh: Dork-ing & Mole Valley A, Hercules Wimbledon B and Collingwood AC A 15 each

Surrey Indoor Athletics Championships

Several Croydon Harriers shone in the Surrey indoor championships at the new Sutton facility, capturing six titles and four further medals, and establishing new championship-best performances.

Led by Welsh International vaulter Cameron Johnston who cleared 4.85m, five other county bests came Croydon's way. Another splendid vault best was achieved by promising 16-year-old Joe Ive, who won the U17 title with a thrilling 3.70m clearance.

U15 sprinter Danny Doyley dominated the 60m with two excellent qualifying runs of 7.4sec culminating with his crowning dash of 7.3sec. Tawanda Mukusha took the long jump very comfortably by 54cm with his outstanding leap of 6.07m.

U13 prospect Karym Irving took double glory with eye-catching wins in the 60m with his 8.7secs clocking and a 4.10m clearance in the long jump.

Croydon Harriers Club Cross Country Championships, Lloyd Park

Croydon Harriers Club Cross Country Championships in Lloyd Park incorporated an inter-club match as well as the Southern Counties Veterans Athletic Club Championships.

Steve Bayliss was accompanied by fellow Croydon Harrier under-17 Robbie Powell in the lead from the start for about the first half lap of three making up the 10-kilometre course.

Steve's fast pace opened up a commanding lead over the rest of the competitors and he went on to finish in a stylish 38min and 28sec, to take his first senior Croydon Harriers Club Championship. Robbie was only doing one lap in the young athletes race.

New member Nick Torry made his debut for Croydon and took second place in 39min 25sec.

Robert Langridge took seventh spot in 42min 11sec followed by Colin Oxlade who clocked 43min 29sec for 10th and completed the four to score winning team total of 20 points.

National Cross Country Championships Parliament Hill Fields 22nd February

Croydon Harriers went to Parliament Hill fields for the 114th running of the Senior Men's race in the English National Cross Country Championships and finished 40th out of the 100 teams.

Steve Bayliss once again led the team home with a fine performance, taking 151st place in 47 minutes and 48 seconds for the 12 km course, which was uncharacteristically short of the usual thick, sloppy, muddy conditions runners have come to expect.

Colin Oxlade (M40), was lying in about fourth or fifth for Croydon and approximately 600th in the early stages, but his recent training regime paid off and he came through the field to finish in 541st in 54.36

Surrey Cross-country League Lightwater Park 1st February 2003

Croydon Harriers had a spate of bad luck when they competed in the final match of the Surrey Cross Country League at Lightwater Park near Bagshot.

Owing to several injuries sustained by their leading runners only nine were able to turn out.

This meant that the maximum 90 points were allocated for the missing runner and the team finished fifth from the nine in Division Three. However enough points had been accumulated to enable Croydon to finish second in the final league positions and gain promotion back to Division Two next season.

Steve Bayliss produced another sterling performance to glide into second spot with a fast 28 minutes 32 seconds for the five mile woodland course.

Dave Dymond also was in fine fettle taking 13th in 31.27 closely supported by his friend Darren Bradley who has recovered from a knee problem which prevented him competing in the third match at Coulsdon three weeks earlier.

Darren was back in form with 32.10 for 18th. Andy Del-Nevo has been improving over the country this season, and was pleased to take 32nd in 33.33. M40 Dave Warren also showed he is back into his running with 34.05 for 39th to get ahead of fellow M40 Colin Oxlade who recorded 34.29 for 44th.

National Indoor U20 Athletics Championships 25-26th January 2003 Birmingham NIA

A large contingent of Croydon Harrier athletes took part in the National Indoor Athletics Championships last Saturday.

One gold medal, three silvers and a host of personal bests were achieved.

Pride of place goes to gold medal winner Danny Doyley, whose combination of power and relaxation was too much for his Under 15, boys 60 metres rivals. He finished a clear meter ahead in a PB of 7.40 seconds.

Jemal Dyce despite suffering from asthma, ran a controlled 400 metres to secure silver in 55.8 seconds in the same age group. .

And Philip Greenland also gained asilver medal in the Under 20 Men's Long Jump (7.08m). Training partner Bernard Yeboah had to settle for fourth place, his 6.99m effort being a little below the exceptional standards set by the all conquering 17-year-old.

There were also significant PBs for finalist Emlyn Akoto in the U17 Men's 60m (7.23secs), Miles Dempster in the U17 Men's 400m (52.8secs) and Jordan Roye, 53.6secs in the same event

Enyioma Anomelechi, almost 18, took a coveted national silver in the U20 triple jump at the National Indoor Athletic Championships Birmingham on Sunday January 26. His fine 14.20m effort was only 8cm behind the winner's.

Surrey Cross Country League, Farthing Downs, Banstead 11th January 2003

Croydon Harriers continued their winning ways when the third match of the Surrey Cross Country League was held in icy conditions at Farthing Downs.

The senior five mile race was over two laps on a hillside, and from the start the running was fast and furious downhill for about half a mile then turned along the treacherous frozen valley.

Croydon's Steve Bayliss was seemingly able to ignore the conditions and ran smoothly into second place in 35min. 10sec., once again the club's lead runner in the absence of Jon McCalum. Steve is in second place on 11 points with two runners for the individual award at the end of the season.

Dave Dymond's trip down from Glasgow was rewarded with an excellent run of 39.29 for 14th in spite of a sore calf, just ahead of leading junior runner Matthew Hall who recorded 39.35 for 15th.

Robert Langridge had another good run to finish 19th in 39.41, whilst Craig Purle ran 40.43 for 24th. M45 Julian Dillow, also nursing a calf injury, was pleased with 41.33 for 28th, closely followed by M40 Colin Oxlade 29th in 42.34 and Andy Del-Nevo 30th in 41.52.

To complete the excellent team packing Mikhail Popov was 34th in 42.35 and Dave Warren 41st in 43.13, amassing a score of 236 points.

Non scorers to give support were: 47 Norman Hemming (M45) 43.53, 48 Martin Rowe 44.02, 53 Keith Brown (M45) 44.16, 94 Alan Springett (M40) 49.55, 103 Eric Campbell 53.48, 109 Chris Scott (M55) 55.25 and 110 Ken Crooke (M70) 59.21.

Leading teams on the day: Croydon H 236, Sutton Runners 380, Woking AC 425, Walton AC 442, Haslemere Border AC 463. Croydon hope to extend their lead even further in the last match on February 1, at Lightwater Park, Woking.

Robbie Powell (U17) produced another front running display to win the under 15 and under 17 combined age groups race over one lap in 11.45, and was ably backed up by Mathew Thoroughgood (U17) fourth in 13.18, Davy Jo-Anderson (U15) fifth in 13.36 and Nick Saunders (U17) seventh in 14.22.

The team won easily with 43.5 points to Woking AC's 87.5, and lead in the league table with 120.5 points.

The under 13's race was won by Claudius Ricketts in 13.53 with Joe Pringett taking third spot in 14.27. Jack Shuard was timed at 15.42 for fourth and new member D. Hazz showed good promise when finishing fifth in 16.09.

Team result: Croydon 26, Dorking 86. League position: Croydon 120.2, Dorking 260, Woking 311.5 and Collingwood 379.

Surrey County Cross Country Championships, Nork Park, Banstead 4th January 2003

The Surrey County Cross Country Championships were held over some gruelling courses in Nork Park, Banstead and Croydon Harriers turned out competitors in all the male age groups.

Pride of place went to the under 17 men's section, of Robbie Powell, the under 17 individual champion for 2003 and his team mates Mark Elsworthy and Martyn Rooney, who won their event over the 4.8-kilometre course.

Eight Harriers completed the 12-kilometre senior men's course. John McCallum, Croydon's Scottish international track runner was involved in the battle for the title from the start, and went clear from the field on the third lap. But Jon lost out to the surprise package of the day when 21-year-old Paul Rodgers of Crawley AC sprinted in to take first place in 40 minutes and 20 seconds. Hercules Wimbledon's Ethiopian international half marathon runner Dereje Kebede took second with 40.26, and Jon had to settle for third in 40.34, but was pleased with his highest Surrey Senior Men's Championships placing.

South London Harriers' Pirie 10-mile cross country race 23rd November

The race attracted 57 runners from SLH and other running clubs to tackle the demanding two-lap course at Farthing Downs and Happy Valley. Stephen Bayliss of Croydon Harriers, finished second in 59.10,.

Surrey Cross Country League 16th November 2002

Croydon Harriers leapt into contention for the promotion stakes in the Surrey Cross Country League when they convincingly won all three age groups in the second match held over their home course in Lloyd Park.

Croydon are in Division Three and this was held in conjunction with Division Four and a large field of nearly 200 runners finished.

As anticipated Jon McCallum was Croydon's first home with an excellent run for 2nd place recording 29.02, behind Walton AC's James Harvey's 28.51. This was Jon's first run for the club since he won the final Division Two match in February 2000 and subsequently concentrated on his track career, just missing out on selection for the 1500 metres representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the Sydney Olympics. Recently changing his coach, he is now taking part in cross country again which is good news for Croydon Harriers.

Steve Bayliss produced another sterling performance to take fourth spot in a fast 30.14 for the five miles muddy course over two laps of Lloyds Park.

Robert Langridge had another good run to finish 25th in 33.19 just ahead of M45 Julian Dillow clocked at 33.30 for 27th. Two M40s were next on the scene when Colin Oxlade took 33rd in 33.59 and Dave Warren 34th in 34.05.

Track specialist Andy Del-Nevo was three seconds shy of Dorking & Mole Valley's new M60 the former international distance star graham Taylor who recorded 35.02 for 43rd to Andy's 35.05 for 44th.

Mikhail Popov, a former resident of Moscow some ten years ago, was a flamboyant 46th in 35.19. The everlasting battle between M45's Keith Brown and Norman Hemmings continued when Keith stole a five second lead to finish the scoring ten in 35.30 for 48th, Norman was 49th in 35.35.

The non-scoring support cast were: 68th Duncan Byrne (37.34), 89th Eric Campbell (40.04), 104th M45 Alan Springett (41.45), 115th M65 Mike Caudwell (46.00) and 116th M70 Ken Crooke (48.05).

Croydon won the team with 302 points from Walton AC (340) with Haslemere & Border AC taking third (394). Other clubs: Sutton Runners 403, Woking AC 451, Elmbridge Road Runners 475, Collingwood AC 514, Dorking & Mole Valley 544 and 26.2 Running Club 612.

Positions after two matches: First: Woking 706, second: Croydon 802, third: Walton 803, fourth: Haslemere Border 821, fifth: Sutton Runners 887, sixth: Dorking 947, seventh: Elmbridge 954, eighth: Collingwood 986 and ninth 26.2 RRC 1284. An interesting battle should take place in the third fixture next January.

In the younger age groups the outstanding performance came from Robbie Powell (U17) who took the under 17 and under 15 race with a fast 15.02 clocking. Mark Elsworthy (U17) was fourth in 16.37 followed by young Davy Jo-Anderson (U15) fifth in 17.00. Nick Saunders (U17) gave good support in eighth with 17.43 and Tom Dean (U15) completed the five to score team in 17.52 for ninth.

Croydon won with 27 points followed by Woking AC (57.5) and Walton AC (95.5) with all the non-scoring clubs allocated 142.5 points for equal fourth placing.

Croydon lead overall with 77 points ahead of Woking's 108.5, Walton's 217.5, Dorking's 229.5 and all others allocated 287.5 for equal fifth.

The under 13's continued the good work by winning their race with 63 points. Other clubs: second: Woking (87), third Dorking (105) and all others equal fourth with 130 each. Overall: First: Croydon (128), second Dorking (174), third Woking (181.5), fourth: Collingwood (249) and all others equal fifth (267.5).

Claudius Ricketts led the team with a fast 17.59 for second with Jack Shuard taking fourth in 19.18. New member John Coles showed promise with 20.25 for fifth.

South of the Thames Junior 9th November, Sparrows Den

Croydon Harriers fielded two teams in the South of the Thames "Junior by standard'' five-mile cross country race held over the tough course at Spring Park and Sparrows Den, West Wickham on the weekend.

Ian Wright, fully recovered from the cold which put him out of action for a couple of weeks, was first in for the A team with a strong 30 minutes 44 seconds, finishing in 39th place.

Julian Dillow (M45) was not far in arrears with 31:42 for 46th and Craig Purle made good progress in only his third cross country race when taking 59th in 32.50.

Keith Brown (M45) had another race-long battle with fellow M45 Norman Hemming and turned the tables on him by finishing 65th in 33.21 to Norman's 33.41 for 66th.

Keith completed the scoring four for the A team which finished 14th with 209 points, while Norman started off the B team's effort.

Second scorer for the B's was Eric Campbell who took 90th with 38.20. Croydon's super-vets completed the scoring when Mike Caudwell (M65) ran 42.28 for 98th and Ken Crooke (M70) 44.47 for 104th. The B team finished 19th overall, scoring 358. In the eight to score competition for the Brent Shield, Croydon scored 567 for fifth.

Priory Relays November 2nd

Croydon Harriers had eight members competing in the Redhill and Surrey Beagles AC Priory Relays at Reigate Priory over a two-and-a-half mile hilly course around the park.

New member Mikhail Popov took the first leg and ran a sound stint of 17 minutes and five seconds for 21st position. Norman Hemming (M45) made up some ground with 17.44 to hand over to another new member of Croydon Harriers in 19th. Craig Purle, who joined during the week, bounced back from a fall and battled a stitch for a gallant 19.46 run to hand over to M40 Dave Warren in 26th. Dave gave it his best to power up the field to 17th with Croydon's fastest lap of the day in 16.55. Eric Campbell maintained his good form this season to record 19.01 for 19th and hopes his record of turning out for all events will allow him to retain his hold on the Dr Nick Cambridge points trophy he won last year. M70 Ken Crooke had a better than usual run to bring the team home in 20th with a solid 20.44 clocking. Ashley Green started off the incomplete B team with a run of 21.46 for 32nd on the first leg followed by Mike Caudwell (M65), who ran 21.46 for 29th. Norman Hemming, training for next year's London Marathon, ran the third stage in 18.45 to finish 24th for the three stages.

East Surrey Amateur Athletic League in Lloyd Park 26th October

Croydon Harriers hosted the second event of the East Surrey Amateur Athletic League in Lloyd Park and had much better fortune than in the Relays recently held at Wimbledon. The senior team packed their four scorers in the first 22 places, totalling 50 points to take 2nd behind Boxhill Racers’ 29. Paul Haywood won in a fast 28 mins 21 secs. over the five undulating miles for Boxhill, showing that he has recovered his form after a period out with injury. Steve Bayliss was third with yet another sterling display recording 30.07 over his tough home course and looks likely to be the club’s top performer for this season. The multi-talanted seventeen year old Matt Hall, in his first year with the seniors, taking time off from hockey to run lived up to his reputation in the younger ranks by taking10th spot in 31.59 and was first placed junior man into the bargain. Robert Langridge’s enthusiasm for his running paid off when he was timed at 32.43 for 17th. after travelling up from his Folkstone home. Julian Dillow earlier helped out with marking the course and still had energy to spare when finishing 22nd with 33.48 and claiming top M45 position to complete the scoring four for Croydon. Non-scoring support was given by M40’s Dave Warren 35 (35.01) and Colin Oxlade 37 (35.06). The "B" team followed in the footsteps of the "A" by taking 10th with 183 points and placing 2nd of the "B" teams. They were led home by the inseperable M45 duo of Norman Hemming 42nd (35.55) and Keith Brown 44th (36.08). Next came Eric Campbell bouncing along in 38.21, about two minutes faster than last years race to take 64th spot. Alan Springett (M40) made a welcome return to Croydon Harriers after a break of 20 years and finished 73rd with 41.38. Non-scorers: Mike Caudwell (M65) 45.07 and Ken Crooke (M70) 46.50.

Coming into the match Croydon "A" were lying 5th after the Relays but an interesting situation has arisen now because four clubs are equal 2nd all having accumulated 19 match points. They are Croydon Harriers, Striders of Croydon, Epsom & Ewell Harriers and Crawley AC. Boxhill are leading with 23 points, which will be difficult to peg back in the road events in March & April next year.

Croydon’s young athletes had another good day with the under 13’s scoring 13 points for another 1st team place. Claudius Ricketts was 3rd in 13.17 over the shorter two mile lap for the younger element with Joe Springett not far behind in13.38 for 4th. With Jack Shuard running 14.16 for 6th they got a 7 point lead on rivals Hercules Wimbledon AC’s 20 score. Overall positions: 1. Croydon 24, 2 Hercules 21 and the others trailing far in arrears. Young Dan Hall gave non-scoring support with 14.23 for 8th.

Sean Elsworthy was the "B" team finishing 15th in 18.01 which counted as 8th and got 5 match points. Added to 9 from the relay this gave Croydon "B" 3rd team overall from the 11 teams to finish.

Robbie Powell was a clear-cut winner of the under 17 men combined with under 15 boys race also over two miles. He "powered" round in 11.01 well clear of Hercules Wimbledon runner Alex Bodin’s 11.54 for 2nd. Mark Elsworthy gave great support with 12.23 for 5th and Martyn Rooney opened his season with a fine 12.43 for 8th. The supporting role went to Nick Saunders with 14.00 for 15th.

Croydon scored 14 to 2nd team Crawley’s 24 with Croydon "B" 3rd on 32. The "B team consisted of 7th Mathew Thoroughgood 12.39, 10th Dany Jo-Anderson 13.10 and 16th Nick Atkins 14.00. Croydon fielded a "C" team led in by Tom Dean 17th (14.15), Jessica Goodwin 20th (14.50) and sprinter Celetino Ening 22nd (15.17) scoring 58 for 6th place.Non-scorer Robert Agnew took 25th in 18.01. Overall positions are: 1. Croydon Harriers "A" 24 match points, 2. Crawley AC "A" 22, 3. ,Hercules Wimbledon "A" 19, 4. Croydon "B" 18, 5. Hercules "B" 12. Equal 8th: Croydon "C" 7 and Crawley AC "C" 7.

Surrey Cross Country League Epsom Downs 12th October, 2002

Croydon Harriers senior team produced a disappointing performance in the first match of the Division III Surrey cross Country League held on Epsom Downs, owing to several members not being able to take part owing to other commitments and injuries.

Steve Bayliss had another fine run to clock 30:52 for the tough five mile course. The first half mile or so was all downhill from the start at Tattenham Corner past the Grandstand before turning and climbing uphill past the woods, then turning again for a downhill stretch before another long uphill grind until turning back to the start for a run into the finish area.

The seniors ran two laps and Steve gave Croydon a good scoring start when taking 5th spot. Ian Wright was well up, taking 12th place with a good 32.05 stint. Julian Dillow, opened his cross country season with a promising 34:42 to take 33rd and fellow veteran Colin Oxlade was next home in 39th.

The team were 8th of the nine clubs in Division III and scored 500 points, but may have a chance of moving up the rankings if some of their faster runners are able to get along for one or all three of the remaining matches.

Woking AC appear to be the favourites for the season with a winning score of 255. Promoting Club 26.2 Running Club trailed home in 9th with 612 points.

Striking a brighter note, the younger athletes won both of their races held over one lap of 2.5 miles. Robbie Powell led the under 15 & 15's with another powerful run of 15:48 to take second place behind J Hemsted of Woking AC's 51, both well clear of Dorking & Mole Valley's 87 and Haslemere Border AC's 122.

In the under 13 boys section Croydon scored 65 for a close win over Dorking & Mole Valley AC's 69 with Woking 3rd on 94.5. Collingwood AC took 4th with 119. Josh Gorecki of Dorking won easily in 17:33 followed by a trio of Croydon Harriers: Claudius Ricketts led them in, taking 2nd with a fine effort of 18:34 and Joe Springett was a close 4th with 18:49.

East Surrey A.A. League relays, Wimbledon Common 5th October, 2002

Croydon Harriers Cross Country Season got off to a good start when they took part in the East Surrey A.A. League relays on Wimbledon Common. Pride of place went to the young athletes section (under 15 & 17's) who won their 3 by 1.95 mile relay. Robbie Powell storming into the lead on the first leg was timed at 10 minutes and 14 seconds, a time that would have been welcomed by most of the senior teams in their squads, and handed over to Nick Saunders well clear of the Hercules Wimbledon runner, Alex Bodin's 10.36. Nick Saunders kept up the good work by running 11.41, handing over still in the lead by 5 seconds. Mark Elsworthy picked up the pace with an excellent 10.43 to bring Croydon home in 32.38, 17 secs ahead of Crawley A.C. (32.55) and third placed Hercules Wimbledon (33.32). Croydon's B team finished 5th in 36.34 led off by Nick Atkins, 8th in 12.21. The second leg by Tom Dean took them up to 6th with 12.43 and there was fine performance from Mathew Thoroughgood of 11.30 on the last leg to consolidate their position.

In the under 13's race over on lap of the relay course Croydon were again in dominating form to clinch the team spot, led by Joe Springett in 2nd with 12.15 to his credit. Claudius Ricketts was close up in 3rd, timed at 12.24 and Jack Shuard completed the team in 7th with 13.33. Croydon scored 12 points to win with Crawley 2nd (14) and Hercules 3rd (19). Non-scorers in support were Dan Hall 9th in 14.16 and John Coles 11th in 14.23.

Croydon finished two teams in the senior 4 X 1.95 Relay. The A team was led off by Ian Wright who came round in 4th spot with the 7th fastest time of the day of 10.04 handing over to Andy Del-Nevo who justified his A team status with the club's 5th fastest leg of 11.45 handing over in 6th. Stephen Bayliss making a return to the fold after several years away, was the star of the senior team, blasting round in 9.51 to move into 3rd overall.
