SURREY INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS, SUTTON, SUNDAY 15 FEBRUARY 2004
Croydon Harriers' athletes took five county titles and set three championship-best performances into the bargain at the Surrey Indoor Athletics Championships in the Sutton Arena on Sunday.
Three of the club's pole-vaulters struck gold, and two, U20 Joe Ive 4.30m and U15 Ryszard Buk 2.80m, set championship-best performances (CBP). Senior Greg Conlan won with a clearance of 4.40m.
Two other athletes soared successfully skywards in the high jump.
U17 Tsidi Dagadu took U17 gold at 1.70m (CBP) and Michael Asamoah cleared 1.65m for U15 silver.
The Amomelechi brothers, Enyioma and Ugochi were in particularly good form in the triple jump. Enyioma cleared 14.43m to take the U20 title, while older brother Ugochi advanced his personal best to 14.09m for the senior silver.
Ugochi also made the medals in the sprint taking a 60m bronze in 7.09sec.
U17s Emlyn Akoto 7.03sec and Danny Doyley fought an exciting battle for well deserved second and third places in their 60m dash.
Jermaine Alexander ran impressively for a close second in the U15s in 7.43sec. U13s Kariym Irving 8.66sec and Jordan Alexander 8.67sec were third and fourth, with Kariym later taking the long jump title with a 4.51m leap. Jorden Berkeley took bronze in the U15 girls' 60m in 8.20sec.
Croydon also won two shot-put bronze medals courtesy of Luke Adekoya, with 10.89m in the U15s, and U13 Erasmus Akoto, who reached 9.21m.
Archbishop Tenison's School pupil Joscelynn Hopeson continued her impressive season by retaining her Surrey County 60m (U17) title in Sutton over the weekend.
Joscelynn, 15, ran a CBP and personal best time of 7.5sec. Her sister Twinelle, 12, took gold in her age group setting a CBP time of 8.29 in her U13 age group.
Surrey Cross Country League, Merrow 10th January 2004
Croydon Harriers, despite missing a few of their top runners, had a good result when participating in the third match of the Surrey Cross Country League at Merrow Down, Guildford.
Jon McCallum showed that he was back on top form, striding effortlessly round the tough five mile course. He had to concede victory however to Hercules Wimbledon's Dereje Kebede who went into the lead from the start and was never caught.
He recorded a fast 25 minutes and 14 seconds and Jon was only 17 seconds down in second with 25.41. Nick Torry had a busy morning taking a friend to Gatwick Airport, but got to the start with about 25 minutes to spare. This did not spoil his race and he took 14th place with another good performance timed at 28.32.
Next in for Croydon was Dave Dymond, who also was involved in an airport rendezvous with Darren Bradley who picked him up at Heathrow on the way up from Devon. Dave finished 18th in 28.52 and Darren took 21st with 28.59.
Croydon's score of 446 put them in fourth place, but their cumulative score of 1,361 moved them up one place to third overall.
Result for the third match and league positions and scoring: 1. Guildford and Godalming 139; 2. Hercules Wimbledon 251; 3. Dulwich Runners 359; 4. Croydon Harriers 446; 5. Striders of Croydon 504; 6. Woking AC; 7. Wimbledon Windmilers 586; 8. British Airways 592; 9. West 4 Harriers 672.
An interesting battle looms ahead in the last match hosted by Croydon Harriers in Lloyd Park next month. Dulwich, Croydon and Hercules Wimbledon will be aiming to take second overall and gain promotion to Division One.
Croydon's young athletes were in action in the combined under 15 and 17 age groups race of just under 2.5 miles.
Robbie Powell took third place, but his performance was not measured as no times were recorded. He was ably supported by Ashley George, who is getting closer to him with each race and finished close up in fourth. Although only two from Croydon finished, league rules add points to make a team result, and they did well enough to finish third on the day with 95.5 and are still second overall with 198.
Teams: 1. Hercules Wimbledon 21; 2. Guildford 68.5; 3. Croydon 95.5 ; 4. Woking 129; 5. Dulwich Runners 131.
In the under 13s' race Jack Shuard and Will Mercer ran together and finished 12th and 13th, but no times were taken.
Teams: 1. Hercules Wimbledon 33; 2. Woking 38; 3. Guildford 111.5; 4. Croydon 117; 5. British Airways 126.

Croydon 10K 19th October 2003
Croydon Harrier’s Scottish international Jon McCallum ran a time of 33:39 to take the honours in the Croydon 10k Road Race and Fun Run on Sunday morning.
Joined by another 500 athletes and sporting enthusiasts, McCallum won by over a minute from second placed Victor Maughan (Herne Hill Harriers) who took the V40 title with a time of 34:57. Third place belonged to ambitious 16 year old Croydon Harrier Robbie Powell who claimed the junior title in the impressive time of 36:04, and that in the wake of two successful cross-country runs the previous day, representing Oxted School and the Harrier.
Racers and fun runners alike contributed to an almost carnival-like atmosphere following a mass musical warm-up led by two fitness instructors from the Addington Palace Fitness Centre.
Starters honours were shared by the Mayor of Croydon, Cllr. Jane Avis and Donna Fraser, Croydon Harrier’s Olympic 400m star, at the starting point at Lloyd Park Avenue on a fine Autumnal day.
The colourful cavalcade was soon stretched out up Coombe road, with the citrus clad wheelchair racer David Robertson setting the pace. McCallum followed shortly behind and was beginning to show that he really meant business at the head of the chasing pack.
The runners surged ahead three or four hundred metres up Coombe Road, with ultimate winner McCallum and Herne Hill Harrier Maugham V 40 leading the pack.
Turning level into Oaks Road, and across the tramway for the first time with confidence rising, McCallum hit the front and eased away. He extended his lead progressively and after passing the Park Hill section of the course, entering final kilometre, he went on to win handsomely in 33:39, ahead of Maughan and Powell.
Don Kayum V40, 7th in 37:04, running for Strider’s of Croydon, lead their large group home just 3 seconds clear of South London Harrier Francis Upcott who won the V50 category. His club colleague Gill O’Connor V35, who finished a fine 32nd in 39:32, was the well-deserved women’s winner. Marie Johnson was the women’s runner-up in 45th place with a time of 40:22, and the third female finisher was Nicola Dixon 72nd in 42:39 Mark Elsworthy 23rd in 38:47 and 15years old Ashley George 44th in 40:07, both members of the organising Croydon Harriers took 2nd and 3rd places in the U20 category. Wheelchair athlete David Robertson finished 84th with an impressive time of 43:16. The event, probably the best yet, was sponsored by Croydon Champions (guardian) and enhanced by the introduction of several spot prizes donated by the Coombe Lodge Restaurant and Addington Palace Country Club.
It was organised by Croydon Harriers in conjunction with Croydon Cultural Services, with great help from the Tramlink police, the 1st Addington and Selsdon Scouts and the Croydon Lions
