East Surrey League Road Race April 10th 2007

By Matthew Kiernan

Croydon Harriers produced several medal winning performances at the East Surrey League road race in Ewell on Tuesday evening.

As has been the case so many times this season, the junior Harriers excelled themselves, with Jordan Maurice winning the U13 race.

The Wilsons School pupil has gone from strength to strength over the winter, and secured victory in the 2-mile race with an impressive time of 12:30.

He was well supported with Will Mercer (3rd, 13:15) and Fraser Novell (4th, 13:27) ensuring that Croydon finished runners-up in the team standings.

Elsewhere, the Harriers senior team put the heartache of relegation in the Surrey cross-country league behind them with an encouraging team performance.

Veteran Ray Marriott (7th, 23:45) led Croydon home, whilst U20 athlete George Thatcher (19th, 25:29) finished inside the top 20, over the 4 mile course.

Third to score was Dave Warren, (22nd, 25:54) who just held off fellow veteran Colin Oxlade (23rd, 26:06), to place the senior team 3rd overall out of the 21 competing teams.

Junior athletics: Harriers clinch title Epsom Downs 18th March

By Mike Fleet

Croydon Harriers' U13 cross country runners took the Downs League title in swashbuckling fashion with a big win in the final fixture at Epsom on Sunday.

Setting a positive tone from the start, the three young Croydon boys were led home over the 2.5k course by the ever improving Jordan Maurice, who clipped 20seconds off his previous best, to clock a winning 11:59, with tenacious team mate Will Mercer the close runner-up in 12:05.

Admirable support came from newcomer Philip Wise who finished third in 13.12 and Emily Knight, 10th, in 15:13, who was the first girl home.

Further honours came for Croydon from Jordan Maurice and Emily Knight won both overall individual titles Consistent U15 Scott Fanner took a well deserved third overall Croydon title when he concluded his series with 3rd place in12:36.

The club had two U11s in action too, with Andrew Statter completing the 2k course in 13:09 for sixth place, followed by Karina Maurice a commendable 13th in 14:13. They placed fifth out of eight in the team event

Junior athletics: Jumpers set high standards at Indoors

By Mike Fleet

Croydon Harriers' high jumpers took the plaudits in the club's 17-medal haul at the Surrey Indoor Championships last weekend, writes Mike Fleet.

Royal Russell student Tsidi Dagadu comfortably took the title in his first year as an U20.

With narrow failures at a near best of 1.95m, his previous success clearance at 1.90m saw him surpass the opposition by 10cms.

U17 Ned Quiney, another first year in his age group, produced a fine series for a win by 5cm at 1.70m to equal his outdoor best.

He also finished sixth in the long jump at 5.53m.

On Saturday, a shoeless Jordan Staples virtually jumped out of his socks, revealing rare talent to win the U15 event at 1.60m.

He made it a golden double the next day when he stormed ahead in the 60m to win in 7.56 seconds, with fellow Harriers Kristian Wright and Joe Young third and fourth in 7.77 and 7.85.

Omar Dixon set a Championship best performance of 6.30m to claim a U17 long jump victory, and ran a strong 7.02 for silver in the 60m.

The club's sprinting strength was further proved by six more medal-winning runs.

The best of these was Twinnelle Hopeson's gold, won in a highly competitive final.

It was clear nobody would pass the impressive Croydon athlete as she drove determinedly for the line.

The excellent time of 7.69 ranks her 31st in the overall UK women's rankings.

Young Ethan Shakespeare-Richards was in a class of his own in the U13 60m finishing well clear in 8.25.

U20 Jamel Beckford rounded off the club's golden tally in the 60m hurdles which he won in 8.25.

Innovative jumps international 21st Feb 2007 Picketts Lock Athletics Centre & 24th Feb 2007 Birmingham U20 Indoor Champs

Athletics: Okoroafor nets personal best

By Mike Fleet

Croydon Harrier triple jumper Trevor Okoroafor headed a group of ambitious local athletes in their quest for indoor success last week.

The 17-year-old capitalised on his Great Britain U20 selection for the innovative jumps international against France and Holland last Wednesday at the Picketts Lock Athletics Centre.

He stretched to a new best of 14.95m on his third attempt, to take a precocious third overall, immediately behind seasoned international Julian Golley

This performance catapulted him more than 50cms clear of his rivals in the UK Athletics Power of 10 U20 ranking, and lifted him to second overall in the Croydon Harriers all-time rankings with a new club indoor record.

Three days later, in the England U20 Championships at Birmingham, and not expecting anything sensational so soon after his spectacular 35cm improvement, still showed his undoubted talent to take second place with a distance of 14.62m.

He did however have the satisfaction of being the first British athlete to finish, the event being won by a Singaporean competitor. A repeat of his international performance would have won him the title.

Babatunde Amosu also snatched national triple jump silver in the U17 event in which he cleared 13.63m.

The excellent distance he achieved, took him to second in the U17 power of 10 rankings and earned him 18th place in the Harriers' men's all-time list.

Three other Harriers made the top six headed by Erasmus Ntim-Dwemo fifth in the U17 shot with a put of 14.57m.

Two others took sixth places at U20 level. Ryszard Buk cleared 4.30m in the pole vault and Kayleigh Ferguson clocked 9.17sec in the 60m hurdles.

Lee Mclaughlin qualified for the 200m final having run 22.55sec in semi, but had to withdraw.

Downs League, Epsom Downs 18th Feb

Athletics: Depleted Harriers on song

By Mike Fleet

Hit by half-term, numbers were low for the penultimate Downs League meeting at Epsom on Sunday, but the Croydon Harriers in action certainly earned their share of the spoils from the three races.

Of the major individual places, they had a winner, two runners-up and a third.

U13 Elliott Verheary continued his run of fine form with a time of 11 minutes 53 seconds for the 2500m course, 25 sec clear of team mate Jordan Maurice.

These friendly rivals were in a class of their own, both running faster than Epsom's U15 winner In that U15 race the improving Scott Fanner threw down his challenge on the tough hill and it all but worked, until the final stages where he was forced to settle for a creditable second in 12:39.

At the youngest U11 level, Joshua Haasz, following in the footsteps of his uncle Ade Odunsi an outstanding Harrier in the 1980s, made further pleasing progress.

He finished strongly over 2000m to take third in 12:11.

Andrew Statter enjoyed a good run to finish sixth in 12:39 and Marie Comnee and Karina Maurice made pleasing debuts to finish ninth and 13th.

With one match remaining on 11th March, the Croydon youngsters lead the team category at U13 level, and are just two points adrift in the U15 section.

Dasolu shows sprinting promise

By Mike Fleet

Led by rapidly emerging sprint prospect James Dasaolu, Croydon Harriers have been enjoying a considerable degree of success on the UK indoor athletics circuit of late.

Dasaolu 19, followed an impressive Inter City outing at the New Lea Valley Athletics Centre when he finished 5th in the 60m final in 6.76sec, with a televised 4th place in the semi finals in 6.79sec (ht 6.76sec) at Sheffield UK trials on Sunday.

The great experience of running against eventual winner Craig Pickering and Jason Gardener was well worth the journey north.

On the more domestic front a large number of young Harriers competed successfully n the Sutton Open Indoor meeting.

Most registered personal bests and a very pleasing number made the first three.

Twinelle Hopeson was top U17 and 3rd fastest overall in the women's 60m with a sharp 7.69sec clocking.

South of England U17 200m champion Lee McLaughlin just missed his PB finishing 2nd in 7.07sec. Fellow U17 Erasmus Ntim-Dwemo shone in the shot which he won with a 13.54m put.

Powerful Chuxx Onyia's performance suggested greater things to come with an erratic but nonetheless victorious U20 triple jump at 13.35m.

Jamel Beckford took third in the U20 60m hurdles in 8.48sec.

U17 horizontal jumpers Derek Yeboah and Darrel Rugless both took 3rd in their respective disciplines. Long jumper Yeboah cleared 5.83m, while triple jumper Rugless was measured at 10.98m U15 Jordan Staples earned 1st = in his 60m dash a 7.77sec. Lauren Thomas's 8.58sec run earned her 3rd among the U15 girls Catching the eye among the youngest athletes in action, Ethan Shakespeare-Richards looked especially sharp when he won the U13 60m as did Whitney Campbell with her fine 9.01sec win. Older sister Odette ran an 8.06sec PB for 3rd at U20 level.

Holly Run,  Reigate Priory, 17th December

Athletics: Harriers’ on form again in Reigate

By Mike Fleet

Croydon Harriers U13 Boys are rapidly gelling into a force to be reckoned with.

Following their Downs League success last weekend, they travelled to Reigate Priory on Sunday to contest the traditional Holly Run.

They excelled by splitting two powerful Aldershot and Farnham teams, scoring an impressively low total of 16 points, which would have won many a cross-country team competition.

Predictably led home by in form Jordan Maurice in 11:41, the rest of the squad supported him superbly, and all finished in the top 12.

Elliot Verheary was a close fifth in 11:56; tenacious Will Mercer was next, seventh in 12:00; Mark Plackett was only fours seconds back in 12:14 and Zack Dennington completed the Croydon team in a commendable 12th, clocking 12:56.

Joshua Haasz continued his exciting progress to finish fourth among 76 U11s in 7:02, with James Plackett 27th in 7:56.

Scott Fanner took an encouraging 17th in 21:16 for the U15s and Emily Knight kept the club girls' flag flying in 28th spot among the U13s

Surrey League Division 2 Sat 13th Jan 06 West End Common

Croydon’s junior athletes maintained their formidable form on Saturday, with a series of fine performances, despite a challenging 2.5-mile course.

The Under 13’s produced another superb team effort, with Jordan Maurice (2nd 15:38), Elliot Veheary (3rd, 15:39) and Will Mercer (4th, 15:40) enjoying top 10 finishes.

The trio’s display keeps them second in the team standings, narrowly behind hosts Walton AC, with one race remaining.

In the Under 15+17 category, Claudius Ricketts was narrowly beaten into 2nd place by Epsom and Ewell rival Alex Rice and had to settle for a time of 15:10.

It’s a successful return to action for the 16-year-old after picking up a foot injury in the Surrey Championships last week.

Scott Fanner provided good support with a time of 16:33 to place 7th of the 13 finishers.

Meanwhile the senior team continued to battle but to no evail, and remains rooted to the bottom of the division.

However that didn’t stop four Harriers from placing inside the top 50 over the 5-mile course.

Veteran Darren Bradley (22nd, 30:47) held off up and coming U20 George Thatcher (24th, 31:11), whilst Robbie McIntyre (45th, 32:02) enjoyed a return to form, just in front of stalwart Colin Oxlade (50th, 32:17).

Surrey Cross-Country Championships at Lloyd Park Jan 7th 2007

Harriers Under 13 boys team secured team silver, in the Surrey Cross-Country Championships at Lloyd Park on Saturday.

Jordan Maurice (8th, 13:24) and Will Mercer (9th, 13:25) were first home over the severely waterlogged 2 mile course.

Zack Dennington provided non-scoring support to finish 27th in 14:16, exemplifying Croydon’s strength and depth in this age group.

The Junior Men’s team also enjoyed a good afternoon, with George Thatcher (23rd, 26:16) and Ben Robson (29th, 26:57) revelling in the muddy conditions.

University students David Brown (52nd, 32:15) and Matthew Kiernan (53rd, 33:23) completed the team to place 5th overall out of the 6 participating clubs.

The team may have finished in the medals had Claudius Ricketts not suffered the heartache of a foot injury, with only 400 metres from the finish.

The 17 year-old showed great courage to complete the 4-mile course, with Coach Mike Fleet aiding him at his side, despite his obvious disappointment.

When the Senior Men’s 7 & ½ mile race began, you would have been forgiven in mistaking Lloyd Park for a quagmire.

The tough course didn’t stop 3 Harriers placing inside the top 100 though with Colin Oxlade (74th, 54:19), Dave Warren (89th, 56:36) and Terry Lapins (99th, 57:21) having good outings.
