English Schools Cross Country Championships  Loughborough 21st March 2009

Trinity boy Peter Chambers shone at the highest level went within a whisker of golden glory in the junior boys English Schools’ Cross-country Championship at Stanford Hall near Loughborough on Saturday.

Always in contention with the leading group, who for much of the race tested each other warily, Chambers responded strongly when there was a break in the final stages.

By the time the testing hill to the finish was reached the order of the first three looked set, clear of the chasing pack.

Despite digging deep on the final climb, Chambers could not make inroads on the leading two and had to settle for what was still an outstanding third in 15:04, only twelve seconds behind the winner.

The measure of the young Croydon Harrier’s achievement was clear to see with more than three hundred other competitors behind him. No club member had finished in the first three since John Lee won in the 1970s.

Training partner Jordan Maurice had a good run too, as a first year in the Intermediate race.

With the challenge of the final hill and a tough race ahead in mind, Maurice decided on a conservative start, which rewarded the Wilson’s School runner with a top fifth place at 65th in 19:09 in another field of some 300 athletes.

He was fourth scorer for the triumphant Surrey School’s Intermediate team.

European Indoor Championships  7-8th March 2009

The seemingly indestructible 36 year old Donna Fraser travelled to Turin last week for the European Indoor Championships and showed all the Masters back home how it is done.

She not only reached the 400m final via heat and semi, but also set the Team GB 4x400m squad firmly on their way to a sterling silver medal winning on leg one. performance in 3:30.42.

Having run sharp times of 53.06sec and 53.59sec to get through, Donna was unlucky to be drawn in a difficult inside lane for her individual final.  She never really looked to have chance of a top spot and although fighting hard as only she knows how, had to settle to finish sixth in a respectable time of 53.58sec.

Croydon’s involvement in last Saturday’s National Inter Counties Championships at Nottingham, featured of three of their outstanding young hopefuls, Peter Chambers, Joshua Haasz and Jordan Maurice who were representing Surrey.

True to form again Chambers led the Croydon charge in the U15 event to finish an excellent 36th over the 3.5k course in 15:55, with Maurice 52nd only 19 seconds further back in a field of 305 finishers. Their contributions as 4th and 5th scorers helped the county team to take a commendable third place.

Haasz clocked 13:33 to finish under a minute behind the winner, with his team closing in 5th.

Downs League 8th March 2009

Any hopes still held by Croydon’s young athletes of taking Downs League team honours bit the dust at Epsom on Sunday, when officials outnumbered athletes 7 to 2 , in what was their home match.

Thanks yet again to the energetic Peter Chambers, apparently fully recovered from the previous day’s race and travel, the club retained some credibility as he ran home almost a minute clear of the field, to complete a clean sweep of victories and take the individual U15 title, the more impressive since he has another year in the age group.

By way of consolation Jordan Maurice ran away with the Sutton 4.25k trial for the London Mini Marathon trial while Patrick Lucas finished a strong second in the 12-13 section

British Masters Championships 7th March 2009

The hard core of the club’s Masters enjoyed a fair degree of success at the weekend. Field event enthusiast Past President Linda Harrison took a silver in the W55 triple jump at 5.19m, and netted three third places in the throws for good measure too.

Andy Del Nevo reached new heights in the vault with his 2.60m clearance in 4th place and clocked 4:40.14 and 10:28.7 for 8th and 5th in the M 40 1500m and 3000m while Colin Oxlade was pleased with his times of 4:56.21 and 10;22.0 for 9th and 8th places in the M 50 category

English National Cross Country Championships, Feb 21st Parliament Hill

Croydon Harriers close in three teams at Parliament Hill by Mike Fleet

Three Croydon Harriers teams closed in at the English National Cross Country Championships for the first time at a warm and sunny Parliament Hill on Sunday, writes Mike Fleet.

The U15 boys finished in an encouraging 23rd place out of 47 teams, led home by 41st-placed Peter Chambers and Jordan Maurice in 46th, who finished eight seconds apart in a field of 312.

The U13s were led home by Joshua Haas, back from holiday the day before.

The girls were also represented for the first time by Karina Maurice and Zainab Carr-Miller.

Harriers’ men’s team was almost certainly the oldest club team to take part, with an average age of 46. Had it not been for their first finisher, 22-year-old David Brown in 786th, it would have been over 50. Colin Oxlade was next home in 816th with David’s father 1,211th and Ian Slatter, whose son was second finisher for the U13s, in 1,345th.

South of England AA Inter Counties Cross Country January 31st  Biggleswade

Four young Croydon athletes made a major contribution when representing Surrey teams in a six county contest at Biggleswade on Saturday.

Croydon Harrier Peter Chambers continued on the crest of his top form wave in the U15 boys 4.2k event. In contention throughout, he unravelled a tactical triumph which saw several key rivals in his wake.

A perfectly timed strike in a sheltered stretch of the closing stages, saw the Trinity boy home in 13:35, five crucial seconds clear of the runner up to lead the team to victory.

Club mate Jordan Maurice showed well too in the early part of the race, but slightly below par, finished fifty seconds later as the county’s fourth scorer in 18th.  Riddlesdown School runner Will Mercer, a Blackheath Harrier, was close up, three seconds and three places back.

Joshua Haasz, another young Croydon Harrier contributed to further Surrey success In the U13 boys 3k event. They were team runners up, Haasz’s 18th place seeing him 6th finisher for the squad.

Next weekend most of these boys, subject to improving conditions, will be in Surrey school’s colours at the Coombe Lodge field, when the Borough hosts a South East Inter Counties match.

East Surrey League January 31st  Wimbledon Common

Senior Croydon Harriers could only enjoy limited success in their East Surrey League 4x1.95 mile relay fixture on Wimbledon Common last Saturday.

Eighth finishers of the sixteen teams, the Harriers four had the satisfaction of being first all veteran team to close in.

Andy Del Nevo’s 11:06 opening lap was their fastest and saw the Harriers fifth home on leg one. Anchor man Colin Oxlade ran the teams second fastest time of 11:47.

Next weekend they return to Wimbledon Common to compete in the Surrey

League

Winter Track Ashby Mile Handicap Croydon Arena 8th January.

Thirty one Croydon Harriers continued an 80 year plus tradition when they took part in the second Ashby Mile Handicap of season recently.

Two 12 year olds, Karina Maurice and Patrick Lucas head the field at the half way stage with two races remaining.

Several seniors will now be training hard to recover their pride in the next race which is scheduled for Thursday this week.

Surrey Schools Cross-Country Championships Reigate Priory Park 17th January 2009

Croydon boys and girls represented teams from North and South of the Borough on Saturday in the Surrey schools cross-country championships at Reigate Priory Park.

They achieved a reasonable degree of success which was topped by an individual champion and two team fourth places in the ten district event.

Other athletes with Croydon club connections were running in Sutton district colours.

Top local achiever was junior Trinity School runner Peter Chambers (NC) clearly revelling in his return to fitness and the bright relatively dry conditions. Leading the strong field over the 4.5k course from the gun, the highly competitive young talent steadily stretched his lead to12 seconds at the finish. Fellow Trinity runner Jack Beddoes, who just got to the start in time, kept his nerve well, and was next home for the team in 12th place.

Croydon training squad colleague Patrick Lucas (Sutton) a year younger, ran extremely well in 17th place, with another squad member, Shirley High pupil Elliott Veheary (NC) 19th

Andrew Fanthorpe, Trinity, completed the North Croydon scorers finishing 36th, helping the team to place 4th of ten, with the runners-up a mere two points ahead.

The North Croydon U13 boys team also finished fourth headed by Harvey Stainthorpe and William Holmes 11th and 12th, whose battle at the finish just brought them home clear of a tight group of challengers. Next in for the North were Trinity Thompson twins Daniel and Nicholas, some 20 seconds back 22nd and 23rd.

Top Croydon individual in this category was Whitgiftian Joshua Haasz (SC) who despite going off course at one point when leading, fought back to a valiant seventh in 11.47 for his 2.6k run.

In the intermediate boy’s year 10 and11 5.9k event, the first Croydon team finisher was Riddlesdown runner Will Mercer 14th in 20:42 who led his South team to 5th place, with G Thornton 33rd, their second scorer.

North Croydon runners Samuel Jackson (NC) Harris CTC 21st and Mark Plackett (NC) Trinity 24th had no others to back them up.

Croydon Harrrier Jordan Maurice, representing Sutton came home 9th in 20:21, a good result for one with another year left in the age group.

The highest achieving athletes can look ahead to Surrey Schools representation in the South East Schools Inter County event at Coombe Lodge on February 7th and in the English Schools’ Championships in mid march.

South of England Championships, Lee Valley, 17-18 January

Two days of intense indoor competition at the Lea Valley Athletics Centre last weekend, turned out to be a rewarding experience for the team of Croydon Harriers which travelled there across the Thames last weekend.

The club’s medal tally of ten, featured three golds, three silvers and four bronzes, is the just reward for good training being done week in and week out at the Croydon Sports Arena.

Seemingly oblivious to the passage of time veteran Olympian Donna Fraser looked fantastic in the women’s 200m. She dominated her and semi final with clockings of24.63sec and 24.36sec and stormed home well clear in the final, setting a Championship Best Performance of 24.30sec.

At the lower end of the age range Peter Chambers crowned Surrey Schools Junior Champion the previous day, showing amazing powers of recovery, when he virtually soloed to victory in the U15 boys 1500m in 4:29.08, for a second Croydon Championship best performance,

The Croydon clubs third gold came courtesy of Josh Atille, who took the U15 boys 60m sprint in 7.41sec. The Beacon school student did not leave it there, negotiating three rounds in the 200m, taking silver in the final with a fine run in 23.72sec.

U17 Trinity school long jumper Elliott Safo progressed to 6.32m, a huge improvement of 17cms which earned him silver too.

Twinelle Hopeson, although a bit below par did well to take bronze in the U20 women’s 60min 7.64sec, but wisely stuck to the one event. Jake Bernard ran 7.44sec for his U15 bronze and Cameron Smith clocked 7.12sec for his U17 bronze,

Out of the medals, but none the less showing good early season form, Harry Rogers cleared 1.80m for 5th in the U17 high jump.

Highlights: 2 Championship best performances, 2 Golds, 3 Silvers, 4 Bronze medals and countless PBs. Well done everyone!

SURREY COUNTY CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, 3rd January 2009 held at Lloyd Park, Croydon

With Croydon Harriers hosting the Surrey Cross Country Championships on Saturday, runners and county cognoscenti converged on Lloyd Park in their hundreds to enjoy the occasion.

Apart from frozen ground presenting an additional challenge for the athletes whose ages ranged from eleven to seventy plus, the accompanying bright winter sunlight and windless day presented almost perfect conditions for the colourful array of combatants.

With an ageing illness and injury struck senior squad the Harriers looked to their promising young bloods for success and their U15 boys although one key member light, produced some excellent performances which earned them two individual medals, the coveted gold, the bronze and team silvers.

Jordan Maurice dominated the race virtually from start to finish striding home powerfully, punching the air with delight as he crossed the line in 14:48, almost half a minute ahead of Herne Hill’s Lewis Lloyd with, tenacious team mate Peter Chambers providing a strong challenge third a further 11 seconds back.

Thanks to the tenacious efforts of Elliott Veheary 22nd, Jacob Paul 40th and the close up chase of Ben Savill 42nd the Croydon club clinched second place behind the powerful Windsor Slough Eton and Hounslow conglomerate by two crucial points !

The club’s U13 boys also had well founded hopes of making the medals until the unlucky Joshua Haasz fell and injured himself while leading the Croydon challenge in 7th place.  Patrick Lucas then found himself heading the seriously weakened Harriers unit. He led them home finishing 11th with younger boys Jacob Cross 44th, Karik Iyer 54th and Harvey Stainthorpe 59th completing the scoring. The team then had to settle for 7th of the 13 closing in. With Haasz and the latter four all eligible for next year they can be seeking major success then.

The major county titles went to Phil Wicks Belgrave who ran the men’s race in splendid isolation stretching his lead to over two minutes and Lily Partridge Aldershot Farnham and District, placed a similar iron grip on the women’s title from early on for a comfortable win

Thames Hare and Hounds took the men’s team title while the women’s team golds went to Aldershot Farnham and District.

James Buchanan made a superb cross country debut with victory in the Surrey Cross Country League last Saturday as Croydon Harriers finished fourth.

Such was Buchanan's superiority that he stretched his lead to almost a minute over the five-mile course, with his impressive 28min 56sec clocking.

Craig Purle continued his recent fine form as second Harrier home, finishing eighth in 30:47.

Although there was a considerable gap to the next scorer, Andy Del Nevo, 26th, three more of his team-mates, Colin Oxlade, David Brown and Martin Rowe closed in within the 30s for valuable team packing. Matthew Kiernan, Julian Dillow, Keith Brown and Ian Statter were the other scorers.

Sarah Bruce-Green kept the club flag flying when she finished 73rd in the Surrey Ladies event.

The club's young athletes found themselves stretched, first for their schools in the English Schools Team Cup on Saturday morning at Roundshaw Park, and then in the afternoon at the Surrey League at Lightwater Park, followed the next morning on Epsom Downs in the first of the Downs League fixtures.

Under 15 Trinity boy Peter Chambers was star turn among the youngsters contesting all three and winning all of them. He was a clear victor on Saturday, with training partners Jordan Maurice (Wilson's) and Mark Plackett, (Trinity) well to the fore too.

Maurice timed his final surge to perfection moving from fifth to second in the final stages, and Plackett finishing fifth.

Maurice made it to the final with his Wilson's team-mates, while Trinity just missed out at this level but had the satisfaction of seeing their juniors through thanks to a solid team effort led by Harvey Stainthorpe in fifth.

After a three-hour break Chambers successfully threw down the gauntlet again at Lightwater for another comfortable victory, finishing almost two minutes ahead of the runner-up.

The next morning going ahead from the gun in familiar style, the seemingly insatiable youngster ran almost a minute clear of his Downs League rivals, with the valiant Placket deservedly clipping his course best by 30 seconds in fifth.

The U15 team, understandably light on numbers, had to settle for second, when in normal circumstances they would have won easily.

Team placed 7th

Surrey Young Athletes Cross Country Relay Championships at Stoke Park, October 4th 2008

Foul weather is no deterrent to keen young athletes, as evidenced when Croydon Harriers successfully fielded teams in each of the three boy’s events at Stoke Park Guildford last Saturday.

The club’s U15 team was predictably, pride of the pack. They lead for all but the final few metres of a thrilling three per team race, before succumbing to powerful Windsor Slough Eton and Hounslow AC whose anchor runner snatched gold from them on the run in.

Confident Peter Chambers took the Harriers to the front at the three quarters point on leg one, and stretched his lead from the pursuing pack to clock 7:30, the fastest time of the day. Second runner Mark Plackett stuck to his task well, to keep the club in the lead with a good 8:15 leg. It was then over to team captain Jordan Maurice, who despite a fine fighting anchor leg of 7:45 could not hold off the final sprint  Windsor boy number three, who took his team home by just 6 seconds.

Such was the superiority of the first two clubs that Croydon finished 1 minute 37 seconds clear of the third team. 20 teams closed in.

The Harriers U17 squad ran well too, with a sixth place finish in a field of twelve. The fastest lap went to Scott Fanner who clocked 7:53 leg one. Ali Yahi returning to form took the team up to 5th with his 7:58 run, and Alfie Keeble held on well for 6th with his 8:27 run on the anchor leg.

The Harriers U13 squad enjoyed a good competition too, taking 10th, ahead of 22 other teams. A solid start from Kartik Iyer in 9:05 brought the in 16th.  Stirling Gibbons stuck to his task well on leg two in 9:55 and last runner Joshua Haasz stormed past nine runners to bring the club home with a flourish in 8:10, the third fastest in his event.

Young Harvey Stainthorpe ran a noteworthy solo leg in 9:46, having earlier in the day swum 50 lengths of the Trinity School pool as part of their open day programme

Although unable to complete teams it was pleasing to see some Croydon girls in action. Karina Maurice 10:56 and Charlotte Fitzhugh 11:24 ran in the U13 race, while Abigail Foster 11:34 kept Croydon’s flag flying in the U15 category.

Croydon Harriers Beijing Olympic 400m finalist Martyn Rooney made a welcome informal return to his former training ground at the Croydon Arena last Thursday.

Many of the athletes, especially the younger ones, were thrilled to have the chance to talk to their hero and seek autographs.

Rooney was also on hand to offer advice and encouragement, but perhaps wisely declined the chance of running round the familiar track on a chilly evening

Croydon boys’ encouraging effort.

A large group of Croydon Harriers boys successfully made the transition from track to country in the John Bolt Memorial Relays at Sparrows Den on Saturday, their form suggesting that they will do well in the cooling months ahead,

With their strengths spread across two teams, high corporate places could not be expected, and the club A team finished mid field.

Jordan Maurice shone with a 10:55 leg in which he ran virtually solo and still produced a strong acceleration on the run in. Surrey pentathlon silver medallist Jacob Paul clocked 11:05 and Elliott Veheary, a year younger made a promising comeback to club competition with his feisty run in 11:11.

Joshua Haasz and Jacob Paul were the quickest of the club U13s.
