English Schools Cross Country Championships Loughborough 21st March 2009
Trinity boy
Peter Chambers shone at the highest level went within a whisker of golden glory
in the junior boys English Schools’ Cross-country Championship at Stanford Hall
near Loughborough on Saturday.
Always in
contention with the leading group, who for much of the race tested each other
warily, Chambers responded strongly when there was a break in the final stages.
By the time
the testing hill to the finish was reached the order of the first three looked set,
clear of the chasing pack.
Despite
digging deep on the final climb, Chambers could not make inroads on the leading
two and had to settle for what was still an outstanding third in 15:04, only twelve
seconds behind the winner.
The measure
of the young Croydon Harrier’s achievement was clear to see with more than
three hundred other competitors behind him. No club member had finished in the
first three since John Lee won in the 1970s.
Training
partner Jordan Maurice had a good run too, as a first year in the Intermediate
race.
With the
challenge of the final hill and a tough race ahead in mind, Maurice decided on
a conservative start, which rewarded the

Having run sharp times of 53.06sec and 53.59sec to get through, Donna was
unlucky to be drawn in a difficult inside lane for her individual final. She never really looked to have chance of a
top spot and although fighting hard as only she knows how, had to settle to
finish sixth in a respectable time of 53.58sec.

True to form again Chambers led the Croydon charge in the U15 event to
finish an excellent 36th over the 3.5k course in 15:55, with Maurice

contributions as 4th and 5th scorers helped the county
team to take a commendable third place.
Haasz clocked 13:33 to finish under a minute behind
the winner, with his team closing in 5th.
Downs League 8th
March 2009
Any hopes still held by Croydon’s young athletes of taking Downs League
team honours bit the dust at Epsom on Sunday, when officials outnumbered
athletes 7 to 2 , in what was their home match.
Thanks yet again to the energetic Peter Chambers, apparently fully
recovered from the previous day’s race and travel, the club retained some
credibility as he ran home almost a minute clear of the field, to complete a
clean sweep of victories and take the individual U15 title, the more impressive
since he has another year in the age group.
By way of consolation Jordan Maurice ran away with the Sutton 4.25k
trial for the London Mini Marathon trial while Patrick Lucas finished a strong
second in the 12-13 section
British Masters Championships
7th March 2009
The hard core of the club’s Masters enjoyed a fair degree of success at
the weekend. Field event enthusiast Past President Linda Harrison took a silver in the W55 triple jump at 5.19m, and netted three
third places in the throws for good measure too.
Andy Del Nevo reached new heights in the vault
with his 2.60m clearance in 4th place and clocked 4:40.14 and
10:28.7 for 8th and 5th in the M 40 1500m and 3000m while Colin Oxlade was pleased with his times of 4:56.21 and 10;22.0
for 9th and 8th places in the M 50 category

Croydon Harriers close in three teams at Parliament Hill
by Mike Fleet
Three Croydon Harriers teams closed in at the English National
Cross Country Championships for the first time at a warm and sunny Parliament
Hill on Sunday, writes Mike Fleet.
The U15 boys finished in an encouraging 23rd place out of 47
teams, led home by 41st-placed Peter Chambers and Jordan Maurice in 46th, who finished eight seconds apart in a field of 312.
The U13s were led home by Joshua Haas, back from holiday the day
before.
The girls were also represented for the first time by Karina
Maurice and Zainab Carr-Miller.
Harriers’ men’s team was almost certainly the oldest club team
to take part, with an average age of 46. Had it not been for their first
finisher, 22-year-old David Brown in 786th, it would have been over 50. Colin Oxlade was next home in 816th with David’s father 1,211th
and Ian Slatter, whose son was second finisher for
the U13s, in 1,345th.

Croydon Harrier Peter Chambers continued on the crest of his top form
wave in the U15 boys 4.2k event. In contention throughout, he unravelled a
tactical triumph which saw several key rivals in his wake.
A perfectly timed strike in a sheltered stretch of the closing stages,
saw the Trinity boy home in 13:35, five crucial seconds clear of the runner up
to lead the team to victory.
Club mate Jordan Maurice showed well too in the early part of the race,
but slightly below par, finished fifty seconds later as the county’s fourth
scorer in 18th.

U17 Trinity
school long jumper Elliott Safo progressed to 6.32m,
a huge improvement of 17cms which earned him silver too.
Twinelle Hopeson, although a bit below par did well to take bronze
in the U20 women’s 60min 7.64sec, but wisely stuck to the one event. Jake

SURREY COUNTY CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, 3rd January 2009
held at Lloyd Park, Croydon
With
Croydon Harriers hosting the Surrey Cross Country Championships on Saturday,
runners and county cognoscenti converged on Lloyd Park in their hundreds to
enjoy the occasion.
Apart from frozen
ground presenting an additional challenge for the athletes whose ages ranged
from eleven to seventy plus, the accompanying bright winter sunlight and
windless day presented almost perfect conditions for the colourful array of
combatants.
With an ageing
illness and injury struck senior squad the Harriers looked to their promising
young bloods for success and their U15 boys although one key member light,
produced some excellent performances which earned them two individual medals,
the coveted gold, the bronze and team silvers.
Jordan
Maurice dominated the race virtually from start to finish striding home
powerfully, punching the air with delight as he crossed the line in 14:48,
almost half a minute ahead of Herne Hill’s Lewis Lloyd with, tenacious team
mate Peter Chambers providing a strong challenge third a further 11 seconds
back.
Thanks to
the tenacious efforts of Elliott Veheary 22nd,
Jacob Paul 40th and the close up chase of Ben Savill
42nd the Croydon club clinched second place behind the powerful
Windsor Slough Eton and Hounslow conglomerate by two crucial points !
The club’s
U13 boys also had well founded hopes of making the medals until the unlucky
Joshua Haasz fell and injured himself while leading
the Croydon challenge in 7th place.
Patrick Lucas then found himself heading the seriously weakened Harriers
unit. He led them home finishing 11th with younger boys Jacob Cross
44th, Karik Iyer
54th and Harvey Stainthorpe 59th
completing the scoring. The team then had to settle for 7th of the
13 closing in. With Haasz and the latter four all
eligible for next year they can be seeking major success then.
The major
county titles went to Phil Wicks Belgrave who ran the
men’s race in splendid isolation stretching his lead to over two minutes and
Lily Partridge Aldershot Farnham and District, placed a similar iron grip on
the women’s title from early on for a comfortable win
Thames Hare
and Hounds took the men’s team title while the women’s team golds
went to Aldershot Farnham and District.

Team placed 7th
Foul
weather is no deterrent to keen young athletes, as evidenced when Croydon
Harriers successfully fielded teams in each of the three boy’s events at Stoke
Park Guildford last Saturday.
The club’s
U15 team was predictably, pride of the pack. They lead
for all but the final few metres of a thrilling three per team race, before
succumbing to powerful Windsor Slough Eton and Hounslow AC whose anchor runner snatched
gold from them on the run in.
Confident
Peter Chambers took the Harriers to the front at the three quarters point on
leg one, and stretched his lead from the pursuing pack to clock 7:30, the
fastest time of the day. Second runner Mark Plackett
stuck to his task well, to keep the club in the lead with a good 8:15 leg. It
was then over to team captain Jordan Maurice, who despite a fine fighting
anchor leg of 7:45 could not hold off the final sprint Windsor boy number three, who took his team
home by just 6 seconds.
Such was
the superiority of the first two clubs that Croydon finished 1 minute 37
seconds clear of the third team. 20 teams closed in.
The
Harriers U17 squad ran well too, with a sixth place finish in a field of
twelve. The fastest lap went to Scott Fanner who clocked 7:53 leg one. Ali Yahi returning to form took the team up to 5th
with his 7:58 run, and Alfie Keeble
held on well for 6th with his 8:27 run on the anchor leg.
The
Harriers U13 squad enjoyed a good competition too, taking 10th,
ahead of 22 other teams. A solid start from Kartik Iyer in 9:05 brought the in 16th. Stirling Gibbons stuck to his task well on
leg two in 9:55 and last runner Joshua Haasz stormed
past nine runners to bring the club home with a flourish in 8:10, the third
fastest in his event.
Young
Harvey Stainthorpe ran a noteworthy solo leg in 9:46,
having earlier in the day swum 50 lengths of the
Although unable to complete teams it
was pleasing to see some Croydon girls in action. Karina Maurice 10:56 and

Many of the
athletes, especially the younger ones, were thrilled to have the chance to talk
to their hero and seek autographs.
Rooney was also on hand to offer
advice and encouragement, but perhaps wisely declined the chance of running
round the familiar track on a chilly evening

Croydon boys’ encouraging effort.
A large
group of Croydon Harriers boys successfully made the transition from track to country
in the John Bolt Memorial Relays at Sparrows Den on Saturday, their form
suggesting that they will do well in the cooling months ahead,
With their
strengths spread across two teams, high corporate places could not be expected,
and the club A team finished mid field.
Jordan
Maurice shone with a 10:55 leg in which he ran virtually solo and still
produced a strong acceleration on the run in.
Joshua Haasz and Jacob Paul were the quickest of the club U13s.
Blackheath & Bromley XC Relays @ Sparrow’s
Den, September 20th 2008
Croydon
Harriers boys made an encouraging start to their Autumn fixtures at Sparrows
Den on Saturday in the Blackheath relays.
Jordan
Maurice looked especially sharp on his U15 anchor leg completed in 10:55, with
multi events medallist Jacob Paul closing in strongly for an 11:01 clocking and
Elliott Veheary make a welcome and successful return
to the club scene with his 11:11 effort.
Jacob Cross
and Joshua Haasz ran well for the U13s.
