Surrey League Div 4, Wimbledon Common 6 Feb 2010

Fine team work and consistency earned Croydon Harriers’ men runners-up spot and promotion from Surrey Cross Country League Division Three after their final match at Wimbledon on Saturday.

Headed only by powerful newcomers Kent AC, who had finished fifth in the South of England Championship the previous week, Harriers, were led home by James Buchanan in third and Steve Goss in eighth.

They were followed by three veterans who made the top 30.  Over-40 Ian Wright was 12th, over-50 Colin Oxlade 16th and over-40 Andy Del Nevo 27th.

Several of Croydon Harriers’ aspiring younger cross country runners were inaction at the South East Schools; Inter Counties at Reigate Priory on Saturday.  Trinity U15 Andy Fanthorpe was highest placed among them, finishing 18th overall and fourth for the county.

John Fisher boy Patrick Lucas came home in 25th spot for Surrey.  Another Trinity student, Mark Plackett produced an excellent run in the intermediate race, placing 22nd overall and again fourth for the county, adding more key scalps to his collection At the weekend, the Harriers will be in East Surrey League action at Wimbledon Common

South of England Cross Country Championships Parliament Hill, 30th January 2010

Fifteen Croydon Harriers were among 2000 athletes who tackled a muddy Parliament Hill in the South of England Cross Country Championships on Saturday.  All but one of the Harriers completed the course, with three of club’s U13s tackling a major championship for the first time.

Pride of place went to U13 Harvey Stainthorpe with his determined running earning him 28th in a field of 208.  Fellow Trinity student Mark Plackett earned a fine 80th of 189 finishers in the U17 race, beating several key rivals for the first time.

A team of eight senior men claimed 48th place and were led home by the evergreen Colin Oxlade in 403rd in the field of 800 plus.  The fast improving David Brown was just 19 seconds further back in 413th and if James Buchanan had not been forced to withdraw having lost a shoe when placed about 100th, the team would have finished over ten places higher.

It worth noting that over twenty clubs failed to close in teams.

Elsewhere, muddier and even wetter miles were notched up by senior Croydon Harrier Martin Rowe, who successfully completed the extreme Tough Guy Challenge at Wolverhampton.

23rd January 2010

Runners from Croydon schools competed in teams representing North and South Croydon at Reigate Priory on Saturday.

Croydon’s greatest success came courtesy Peter Chambers (NC) who won the U17 event by a comfortable 11sec margin. A strong run from Sam Jackson and good packing further back helped the team to fifth among the ten districts.

North Croydon U13 boys achieved the highest team placing of fourth, with Laurence Rook seventh, heading their charge.

Junior Andrew Fanthorpe (NC) was seventh with fellow Trinity boy Harvey Stainthorpe 14th only seven seconds later.

South Croydon Inter Girls F Parris 15th and G Mcdonagh 20th took local pride of place in their race. At junior level, Stevie Lawrence (SC) 29th was the first Croydon runner home, while C Rhule (SC) took an excellent fifth atU13 level.

Elsewhere, Croydon Harriers featured prominently at the Sutton Open at Sutton Arena last Sunday as fourvictories came Croydon way.

U17 Cleo Patrice Barbour looked really sharp winning her 60m in 7.86sec. Other victorious Harriers over this distance were U13 boy Rohan Henry 8.41sec, and U15 girl Leona Brako 8.29sec.

U15 boy Jordan Out cleared 4.67m to win the long jump. Worthy second places went to U15 boy Taiwu Kamojo in the 60m and to U17 Cameron Smith 7.11sec and U20 woman Davine Dubidad 8.32sec

Lauriston road race 2nd January 2010 Wimbledon

Croydon Harrier’s long distance squad kicked off 2010 with a solid showing at the Lauriston road race in Wimbledon on Saturday writes Matthew Kiernan.

Colin Oxlade (23rd, 32:04) and Martin Rowe (25th, 32:23) both impressed over the 5-mile course, while Yasmin Anderson (37:13) was third in the women’s race.

The trio ensured Croydon finished fifth in the team standings.

Elsewhere, Andrew Del Nevo (12th, 20:15) and Dave Warren (57th, 24:12) both enjoyed good showings at the Banstead Woods 5km time trial.

The Harriers will now look ahead to the Surrey cross-country championships in Lloyd Park on Saturday, which is set to attract over 1,000 athletes from the county.

Holly Run Reigate 20th December Reigate

Eight Croydon Harriers enjoyed Christmas conditions at Reigate on Sunday for the traditional Holly Run races.

A crisp covering of snow and bright sunshine really added to the sense of occasion.

The club’s athletes all produced good runs with two wins among them.

U15 Peter Chambers was never headed in the U15/U17 race, finishing in 14.40 minutes and U17 colleague Mark Plackett shone too in eighth place just 20 seconds back.

V50 Colin Oxlade headed his category placing 15th in the senior race.

South of Thames 19th December Wimbledon Common

Croydon Harriers senior cross-country athletes ensured a good finish to 2009 with a solid 13th place at the South of Thames 12km championships.

With the Wimbledon Common course covered in snow and ice, it was left to Colin Oxlade to make the best of the undesirable conditions, finishing 84th in 50:56.

Julian Dillow (50:58, 85th) was in hot pursuit, and the solid packing continued thanks to Martin Rowe (53:17, 109th) and Andy Del Nevo (53:31, 110th).

Norman Hemming (60:26, 135th) and Keith Brown (60:42, 137th) completed the scoring team, while there was non-scoring support from Matthew Anderson (62:05, 140th) and Eric Campbell (72:06, 152nd).

Yasmin Anderson was the first Croydon woman home, placing 19th and crossing the line in 60:32.

Patrick Lucas continued his breakthrough season at apace on Saturday, with a fourth place finish at the Roundshaw Downs Time Trial writes Matthew Kiernan.

The 14 year-old Croydon Harrier clocked a new personal best time of 19:16 over the undulating 5km cross-country course, and was the first junior athlete home in the process.

His nearest rival for the junior honours was club colleague Stirling Gibbons, who crossed the line in a time of 22:00, for 12th place out of the 52 finishers.

Meanwhile Croydon Harriers senior men’s team produced a solid display at the South of Thames cross-country championships in West Wickham.

Croydon finished 16th out of the 27 teams, in the 200-strong field, thanks to the scoring quartet of David Brown (67th, 33:08), Colin Oxlade (70th, 33:16) Julian Dillow (77th, 33:49) and Martin Rowe (125th, 37:08).

There was also non-scoring support from Andrew Del Nevo (128th, 37:28) Keith Brown (151st, 39:28) and Norman Hemming (153rd, 39:36) over the 5-mile race.

Miriam De Souza was the first woman home for Croydon, finishing 43rd.

Inter County and London Cross Country Championships, Parliament Hill 21st November 2009

By Mike Fleet »

Croydon Harriers' young cross country ace Peter Chambers came away with three medals from the Inter County and London Cross Country Championships on Saturday.

Having held back at the start of the legendary course, the Trinity schoolboy eased himself into contention as the course unravelled and appeared to be closing on the Hertfordshire runner in front of him on the final downhill stretch but had to settle for a clear second.

He was though named London Champion and was first home for the Surrey team which finished in third, giving the 14 year-old one gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

In Stoke, two other young Harriers acquitted themselves well in County Schools colours as Patrick Lucas took seventh in the U15 race and Joshua Haasz was ninth in the U13 event.

Croydon Harriers enjoy Downs League wins

By Mike Fleet »

Croydon Harriers youngsters enjoyed a fine start in the Downs Cross Country league at Epsom on Sunday.

They registered two individual wins and a team victory to set up the series well.

Their U13 squad, led home in the best possible way by the tigerish first placer Harvey Stainthorpe, took the keenly contested team win.

Trinity boy Stainthorpe struck decisively for the finish with about 50m remaining.

Next home was the fast improving Kartik Iyer in eighth and the clubs A scoring quartet was completed by Stirling Gibbons in tenth and Andrew Statter in eleventh.

Stevie Lawrence in fifteenth was the third girl finisher in the field of 38.

In form U15 Patrick Lucas ran clear in his category to win by nearly a minute, a performance all the more creditable for he had won a tough Surrey Schools League race at Oxted the previous day, when running for John Fisher School.

News Story October 09

Croydon triple jumper Trevor Okoroafor is targeting success at London 2012 after being rescued from a two-year injury nightmare by a new sponsor.

The 19-year-old, once ranked third in the world for his age group, has barely jumped in the last two years because of a stress fracture to his back and then a tear in his right knee.

With money running low, the Croydon Harrier considered giving up the sport altogether during his lay-off before the Global Sponsorship Group picked him as one of six athletes it would sponsor and provide full management for in the lead up to 2012.

"They have rescued me from the scrapheap," said the former Archbishop Lanfranc pupil currently studying Sports Science at Middlesex University.

"When I was offered it I was down to the bare bones, I had practically nothing.

"But they have given me the platform now to be the best I can be."

Okoroafor took up triple jumping when he was 15 on the advice of friends and looked set for big things.

In his first full year of competition he won the English Schools U17 Championships and the AAA U17 Championships, rising to third in the world with a jump of 15.37m in 2007 before his injury hell began.

"I got a stress fracture in my back and missed a whole year and a half before tearing my lateral meniscus in my knee, which saw me miss the whole of the juniors.

"It was really frustrating and I even contemplated my future in the sport.

"But now GSG has come along and given me a lifeline.

"I am in the final stages of my rehabilitation project at the moment and things are going to be better.

"I would definitely like to come out in 2010 and jump but I am not going to say exactly what I want to do because I did that last year then got injured again.

"The long term aim though is the Olympics.

"I know if I am fit and everything is going properly I can make the Great Britain team."

Surrey XC League Div 4, match 1 @ Cranford Park 9th October 2009.

Croydon Harriers’ cross-country team got their Surrey league campaign off to a promising start on Saturday, with a third place finish at Cranford Park writes Matthew Kiernan.

Chasing promotion after being disappointingly relegated to the league’s fourth tier last season, Croydon needed a strong start and got one thanks to prodigious talent James Buchanan.

The 26 year-old led the 13-strong team home in a time of 26.53 over the five-mile course, to finish third.

The Harriers proceeded to pack the latter half of the top 20, with Ian Wright (11th, 30:09), David Brown (16th, 30.33), Colin Oxlade (18th, 30.41) and Julian Dillow (19th, 30.42) all in close contention.

The scoring team of ten was completed by Adam Schooz (25th, 31:55), Andy Del Nevo (29th, 32.28), Ali Kaplankiran (40th, 33:39), Aaron Noyce (48th, 34:31) and Keith Brown (64th, 37:13).

Meanwhile, Mark Plackett was narrowly beaten in the 2.5mile U17 race, having to settle for second in a time of 15.31.

The U13 team also enjoyed a podium finish, with Andrew Statter, Ben Gales and Tim McGrath ensuring third place out of the nine competing teams.

English Schools Championship multi-eventer 19th-20th September 2009

CROYDON Harrier Kariym Irving gave further indication of his potential as a multi-eventer last weekend, when he finished eighth of 38 in the decathlon in the English Schools Championship at Bedford.

The first year Under 20 produced a score of 6,018 points, which constituted a new club record. His achievement is the more exciting since he is in his first months of pole vaulting, and needs to work on his 400m and 1,500m runs.

The John Fisher student top scored in his favourite discus, earning 772 points with a throw of 45.23m. His crisp 100m hurdles run in 16.6sec also topped the 700-point mark. Irving's other performances were: 100m 11.81sec, long jump 6.34m, shot 11.98m, high jump 1.84m, 400m 57.7sec and 1,500m 5:14.

Faraz Rafi (U15) scored 2,193 points in the pentathlon to place 28th

Surrey Road Relays @ Wimbledon 12th September 2009

Croydon Harrier’s road runners enjoyed their most successful outing in three years at the Surrey relay championships on Saturday writes Matthew Kiernan.

The Harriers finished 14th in the six stage relay at Wimbledon and showed encouraging signs ahead of the upcoming cross country season.

Andrew Del Nevo (18:34, 18th) got Croydon off to a solid start, while George Thatcher starred on 2nd leg, moving up three places with the club’s fastest time of the day of 16:13.

David Brown (17:27), Julian Dillow (18:13) and Keith Brown (18:35) maintained Croydon in 15th, before Colin Oxlade (17:50) anchored the team home to pip Striders of Croydon by just three seconds to place 14th out of the 21 teams who finished.
