EAST SURREY A.A. LEAGUE

Cross Country Relays

2nd October Wimbledon Common

Our young athletes were more successful than their seniors taking 2nd team in the under 13's race and again 2nd in the under 15/17 3 x 2 miles relay.

Under 13 Race: 3rd Ian Horn 12.14 & 4th Nick Saunders 12.16. They got 11 match points to carry forward to the next race.

Under 15/17: 3 x 2 miles Relay - Croydons Paul Hughes (U17) was 3rd Y.A. team on lap 1, but 12th overall because they started together with the seniors, who were running 4 laps. Mathew Hall (U17) ran 11.31 to hold 3rd (13th overall), but Croydon were now 1 min. 14 secs. behind leading Y.A's Hercules Wimbledon "A". Amanuel Tshaye (U17) then took off and stormed through the field overtaking Hercules Wimbledon "B" and 9 senior teams to finish within 2 secs. of Hercules "A"'s 32.40 recording an astonishing 9.56 to finish in 32.42, which was good enough for 3rd senior team over 3 laps. Amanuel's time was only beaten by Paul Haywood of Boxhill Racer's 9.15. Croydon "B" details: 8th team: 8. James Harrison (15)13.12 & 8 Mark Elsworthy (15)12.40.

There was a disappointing turn out for the Senior 4 x 2 miles Relay as only 5 turned up. Barry Cooke got us off to a good start, running 10.16 (equal 4th fastest) on lap 1 for 2nd place. Gary Lomas came in 10th spot with an 11.45 stint and Peter Yarlett picked up a place with his 11.03. Expecting John Fitzgerald for the last leg, Norman Hemming had run 1st leg for the "B" team, but John could not get there, so Norman ran again dropping to 7th with 12.01 for an overall 45.05 team effort.

Our "B" team details:- 17th. Norman Hemming (V45) 11.51 and 22.nd. Ken Crooke (V70) 17.50.

SWEATSHOP

Surrey Cross Country League- Div. II 1st Match - Sat. 16th OCT, 1999

Wimbledon Common

Seniors, Juniors & Veterans 5 miles Race:-

We had a very encouraging start to our target of getting into Division I next season when we finished 2nd, just 15 points behind winners West 4 Harriers, scoring 320 points to their 305. Top scorer for Croydon was supervet Dave Dymond, who flew down from Scotland and was in the leading group all during the race. Early on he was about 6th to 8th, with Deron Fagan making his usual charge in 3rd spot on the first lap, Dave's stamina told in the end and he was clocked at 27.59 for 4th. Deron held on gamely for a good 8th place with 28.28. Ian Wright's good run of 34.08 for 7th in the Dulwich 10 Km the previous Sunday was no flash in the pan as he produced 29.02 for a sterling 13th spot. John Fitzpatrick was a few paces behind running 29.07 for 15th only just ahead of Mike Dawson's 29.12 for 17th and he had Barry Cooke stepping on his heels 1 sec. in arrears, with 29.13 for 18th.

Julian Dillow (V40) was next home in 31st with a solid 30.01. With 7 scorers in the first 31 we looked good for a win, but several of our best were not able to get along for this match. Dave Warren (V40) took 60th (31.53) and V.50 Stan Collie was timed at 33.57 for 88th (76th scorer). Andy Del-Nevo won the battle for 10th Croydon scorer with 34.02 in 90th (78), ahead of Keith Brown (V40) 93rd. (34.15) and Norman Hemming (V45) 95th (34.29).

Leading Race details: 1st Paul Haywood (Boxhill) 27.05, 2nd J. Van Wyck (H/W) 27.18 and 3rd A. Moses (Reigate Priory) 27.39.

Teams: 1. W4H 305, 2. CRO 320, 3. H/W 322, 4. RPR 442, 5. BOX 444, 6.

Young athletes 2.5 miles race:

Only Ian Horn ran for Croydon in this race taking 9th overall, 3rd under 13, and got recorded as 4th team with 115 points, the missing 4 places being allocated 28 points each and added to get a team score.

The Croydon 10km Road Race

Sunday 17th October, 1999

from Lloyd Park, Croydon

Julian Dillow's appetite for racing was partially satisfied when he took 3rd place in 34 min. 35 sec. but this did not get him the first Vet prize as Ray Marriott (South London Harriers) took this title in 2nd spot with 34.15 behind regular winner (except for the April race) Dave Taylor of Blackheath Harriers' 31.36. Dave had an easier ride this time as Yacin Yusuf was not participating.

Other Croydon Harriers:-

11 Paul Lovell (V40) 36.52 - [moved away - I have written to see if he is still interested in Croydon Harriers]. 38 Norman Hemming (V45) 40.03, 52 Robert Langridge 41.15, 111 Mike Caudwell (1st V.60) 46.03, 188 Ron Williams (V60) 50.32 and 234 Eric Campbell 55.48.

The Priory Relays

Saturday 6th November, 1999

Senior Men's 6 x 2.8 miles Cross Country Relay:-

Owing to illness & injury we only had 5 runners available on the day. Deron Fagen was due to run the first leg at his request as he wanted to get a fast run in, but team mates were startled to see the race get under way without any sign of him in the pack. He then appeared asking "Has anyone gone off for us?" By this time the field was disappearing over the horizon, so Deron took off his tracksuit top and went off in pursuit. Expecting him to come in well down the field we were pleasantly surprised to see him come in 19th with a time of 15.35. Allowing 11/2 to 2 minutes for the late start, he must have run one of the fastest laps of the day. Peter Yarlett took over and his 16.38 brought us round in 21st spot. Mike Caudwell ran 20.53 for the third leg for 30th and Eric Campbell's 20.03 yielded 31st. Ken Crooke ran the 5th stage in 25.56 for 34th to be recorded as the first of 7 incomplete teams to finish.

Next was Robert Langridge, 79 th (33.42) closely followed by Peter Yarlett 80th in 33.43. Eric Campbell completed the scoring four in 122nd, timed at 39.14. S|W|E|A|T|S|H|O|P

Surrey Cross Country League

Division II - 2nd Match at Priory Park, Reigate

Saturday 20th November, 1999

Croydon Harriers had the best turn-out for several years and won the 5 mile Senior race with 232 points, well ahead of West 4 Harriers, 262 for 2nd. Boxhill Racers took 3rd with 272, Reigate Priory AC 4th with 502. Overall first 4 teams: 1 Croydon 552, 2 West 4H. 567, 3 Boxhill 716 and 4 Hercules Wimbledon AC 885.

Croydon’s scorers: 4 Jon McCallum 28.20, 5 Dave Dymond 28.27, 7 Steve Goss 28.40, 8 Darren Bradley 28.51, 25 Julian Dillow 30.17, 26 Deron Fagan 30.26, 27 John Fitzpatrick 30.34, 29 Mike Dawson 30.38, 54 Dave Warren 32.38 and 56 Robert Langridge 32.40. Non-scorers: 103 Stan Collie 35.43, 105 Gary Lomas 36.03, 117 Eric Campbell 38.11 and 134 Mike Caudwell 41.48

Notable non-scorer was 16 years old Amanuel Tshaye electing to run in the senior race in order to get a more testing run than if keeping with the under 17’s. He came 12th in 29.24 and would have been 5th of our 10 scorers. In spite of being declared as non-scoring he was originally included in the team and this upset the result, which were recalculated later at home by Don Turner, before being sent in the post to all clubs.

Two Croydon Harriers took part in the 2.5 miles combined U.15/U.17 race. Paul Hughes (U17) was 5th in 15.17 and new member Chris Rumsey (U.15) was 22nd in 22.33. They were classed as the 5th team on the day and 4th overall. Ian Horn was our sole representative in the under 13 boys 2.5 miles race finishing 3rd in a good 17.13. He was feeling the ill effects of a kick in the head when playing rugby for his school in the morning, but is so keen on his running that he insisted on taking part. He was classed as 3rd team on the day and overall.

Cross Country Races on Wimbledon Common

27th November, 1999

At 2.00 pm three members ran in the Hercules Wimbledon 5 mile race: Peter Yarlett was 12th in 32.28. Gary Lomas came 18th in 34.12. Eric Campbell was sent off course by one of the marshals and eventually finished 27th in 50.49. Mike Caudwell and Ken Crooke decided on the Vets AC 5.5 miles race which was scheduled for 2.30 pm. , but when they got to the start discovered that this was the womens’ start time. After much discussion and dither the women decided to go with the men, so all went off at 3.00 pm. Mike was 40th in 45.05 (4th M 60) and Ken had a ding-dong battle with Kevin Burnett of Striders of Croydon (M55) getting home in 53.10 to Kevin’s 53.15.

Saturday 4th December, 1999

Only five Croydon Harriers turned up to contest this ten-to-score event. John Fitzpatrick showed good form to take 5th spot in a fast 31.07 in spite of a goodly intake of party beer the night before. Eric Campbell was 81st in 39.49 and moved to 2nd in the Cambridge Shield stakes on 14. A disappointing turn-out for this important fixture dropped us out of the overall lead into 2nd behind West 4 Harriers. Almost a repeat of the races on the 27th November! - this time Robert Langridge was 12th in the Hercules Wimbledon race in 32.07. Eric Campbell, now knowing the course, took 38th in 37.45. Mike Caudwell preferred the H/W event and was 50th in 41.07.

Surrey County Athletic Association

Cross Country Championships

Lloyd Park, Croydon

(Promoted by Croydon Harriers)

Saturday 8th January, 2000

Fine sunny weather made for very successful day and a lot of good cross- country racing took place Croydon Harriers had mixed fortunes, but the best race of the day was the gruelling battle all the way between Amanuel Tshaye and Edward Prickett of Reigate Priory A.C. for the under 17 men’s title over 6.6 kilometres. On the first lap, Amanuel shadowed Edward most of the way, although the lead alternated from time to time. Half way round the 2nd lap Amanuel made a break, but Edward soon got back in contention. In the later stages both made desperate efforts to get clear, but neither was succesful. The pace hotted up all the way to the line but Edward got home in front by the thickness of his vest to take the championship title in 22.58 to Amanuel’s 22.59.

In all the excitement Andrew Jenner’s performance in taking 14th with 27.07 was almost overlooked, but he did well to come in before the field of 28 closed.

Girls under 13 (3.25 Km).

Jessica Goodwin was Croydon’s sole representative and had a steady run to take 8th spot in 16.48. 27 finished.

Girls under 15 (4 Km).

Samantha Yardley entered on the day and finished 21st in 22.25, closely followed by Elizabeth Goodwin - 23rd in 24.05. 30 finished.

Women under 17 (4.80 Km).

Sophie Chapman ran as an individual and finished well up the field in 6th place timed at 24.07. 19 finished.

Boys under 13 (3.25 Km).

Croydon’s team took bronze medals scoring 57 points behind Aldershot, Farnham & District A.C.’s 19 and Kingston A.C. and Polytechnic Harriers 56. Martin Rooney led them in with an excellent 5th place in 14.06. Next was the eager Ian Horn taking 9th spot in 14.58, and Nick Saunders 21st in 15.37. 57 finished.

Boys under 15 (4 Km).

Seven Croydon Harriers ran, but one was in the colours of Oxted School. Jack Appleton, 7th in 17.05 was part of their winning team which scored 52 points. Had he been running for Croydon we would have won the gold medals. Andrew Achilleos had a superlative run and was a close 2nd to winner Andrew Weames of Aldershot. Their times were 16.04 and 16.09. Mathew Hall took 11th in a fast 17.17 with Clive Jenner 29th in 19.08. James Harrison was 46th in 21.23 to close the scoring. Non-scorers: 47 Mark Jenner 21.28 and Duncan Horn 21.36. 61 finished.

Men & Women under 20.

Croydon had no competitors in this age group.

Senior Men (12 Km).

Croydon had 10 starters in the three lap race and Deron Fagan was once more the team leader, taking 35th place in 48.14. The course was much tougher than in previous races this season owing to the muddy conditions so that times were relatively slower. Julian Dillow had to leave work earlier than scheduled as the 2.30 pm start was before he had anticipated, and ran to Lloyd Park from central Croydon. He belied his veteran status by taking a good 42nd position in 48.39. John Fitzpatrick made a return to racing after nearly a month off training owing to catching the prevailing "flu" bug, but was surprised and delighted with his 50.20 clocking for 60th. Barry Cooke, also short of training was next home in 51.48 for 72nd. Dave Warren (M40) took 81st with 52.45 and Robert Langridge closed the scoring six with 53.51 for 91st in his first outing over 7.5 miles cross country. The non- scorers: 131 Norman Hemming (M45) 58.25, 141 Gary Lomas 59.37 and 160 Eric Campbell 65.25. Ken Crooke (M70) dropped out after two laps, having spent all day helping with the organisational arrangements. When results were given out on the day Croydon were placed 7th from the 17 to close in. Team manager Ken Crooke made a hasty phone call to the Champ- ionship Secretary after checking the results, to point out that Dave Warren had been omitted from our scoring team. Corrected results: 1 South London H. 73, 2 Thames Hare & Hounds 85, 3 Herne Hill Harriers 98, 4 Boxhill Racers 133, 5 Ranelagh Harriers 237, 6 Croydon Harriers 333, 7 Hercules Wimbledon A.C. 364, 8 Sutton & District A.C. 393, 9 Kingston A.C. & Polytechnic Harriers 429, 10 Elmbridge Running Club 430. 17 teams closed in.

The Surrey Championship awards were presented by the County president Mike Fleet and Croydon Harriers were out in numbers on the organisational side. Stan Rogers, Don Webb and Graham Richardson were there all day to mark and marshal the courses, whilst others were covering all neccessary areas such as car parking, refreshments, timekeeping, recording, starting etc. etc. etc... Without thier help the Championships would not have taken place, and thanks are due to all who gave freely of their time and energy.

Division II Jessica Goodwin (Under 13) was again Croydon Harriers flag-bearer in the League and had an excellent run to take third place in the good time of 12.58, a mere 26 seconds away from a victory. Through her efforts Croydon are in 6th League position overall.

SLH "The Pirie 10 Miles X-C Race

from Farthing Downs

Saturday 15th January, 2000...

We had two brave souls taking part in this tough Cross Country race. Up at the sharp end Stuart Major (SLH) and Hugh Jones of Ranelagh Harriers took the "major" honours.

Major led most of the way but was being hauled in by former London Marathon winner Jones in the closing stages. Major finished in 55.18 with Jones timed at 55.32. Tony Harran (SLH) took third in 59.01. Gary Lomas was our man in 27th with a pleasing 70.43 and Eric Campbell showed good form over, for him , a much longer than usual distance, with a 73.02 clocking for 33rd from the 75 runners to finish the full 10 miles.

South of the Thames Cross Country Association

Championship Race

Thomas Bennett School, Tilgate, Crawley, Sussex.

Saturday 22nd January, 2000

We just managed to scrape together a team of six for the Championship race held in the school grounds, including an area of woodland for a testing 10,000 metres course. Paul Lovell, now living in Crawley, was our lead runner and just managed to evade the attentions of Robert Langridge by finishing 86th in 41.24 to Robert’s 87th in 41.26. Gary Lomas was next taking 114th with a firm 44.37, not long followed home by the ever-keen Eric Campbell, who took 124th in 48.31. Mike Caudwell (M60) took the next place for us in 133rd in 52.33. Ken Crooke (M70) was looking forward to another battle with Kevin Burnett (Striders of Croydon) but his shoe got stuck in mud soon after the start, and by the time he got the lace undone and the shoe back on, Kevin was out of sight ahead. Ken nearly dropped out, but decided to carry to complete the scoring six and get a team result, and eventually caught Kevin on the third lap, finishing 140th in 59.49 to Kevin’s 141st of 60.17. 12 teams closed in, and Croydon were 10th with 684 points, behind Striders 9th (543), but ahead of 11th, Lingfield Runners (689) and 12th Deal Triathlon Club (751).

South of England A.A. Cross- Country Championships

Saturday 29th January, 2000

Parliament Hill, Hampstead Heath.

The nearest approach we made to getting a team result was in the Senior Mens’ 9 miles race. Deron Fagan our lead runner once again clocked 56.05 for 161st position. Veteran M45, Norman Hemming took 504th in 64.38 and Robert Langridge in his debut at this level of competition was not far behind his more experienced team mate closing in at 65.17 for 532nd spot. Eric Campbell made a fast start up the opening hilly section and eventually finished 868 with 75.04. 966 finished the championship race.

Two under 17’s ran in Croydon colours: Sophie Chapman timed at 24.38, was 46th from 103 to finish the womens 5000 metres event and Amanuel Tshaye, a favourite for a top three placing, found it hard going and finished a disappointed 14th in 23.40 over 6000 metres in the mens’ race. 161 finished the course.

Mark Elsworthy was 162nd (21.54) and James Harrison 236th (24.09) from 264 in the 4500 metres race for under 15 boys.

In the under 13’s Ian Horn took 58th in 13.31 and Nick Saunders 105th in 14.16 in their race over 3000 metres. These were both good performances in a field of 224.

"The National" Cross Country Championships 2000

at Stowe Park, Buckingham

Saturday 26th Feb. 2000

Four Croydon Harriers ran in the Senior race held over an undulating 12 kilometres. John Fitzpatrick got to the start line about three minutes before the gun went off, having been in a traffic jam on the way, by which time team manager Ken Crooke had gone forward to get a good view of the most impressive sight in Cross Country Running: the Start of the English "National". Ex Croydon Harrier Robin Dickson of Thames Hare & Hounds came to the rescue by giving John a THH number so that he could run. Robin knew that John would not get in the THH scoring 6, so thought there would be no problems from officials. After all this John was pleased to finish 473rd in 50 minutes exactly. Dave Warren (M40) placed 853rd in 54.51 not far ahead of Norman Hemming (M45) who recorded 56.01 for 867th. Eric Campbell completed the Croydon quartet with 61.39 for 1236th place in his first attempt at the "National". 1418 runners closed in.
