Buck-Eye Burl Semi

This guitar is similar in outline to the Padauk solidbody, but has a number of features that are worth mentioning.

The lower body horn has been redesigned to make it more attractive, and to offer even better upper fret access.

The one-piece Padauk body has a large cavity routed out of the bass side to reduce weight. The effect of this cavity can be clearly heard when the guitar is played acoustically. Amplified, the sound is noticeably different from the Padauk solidbody, despite sharing the same basic construction and pickups. Since the decorative top is unlikely to have much effect on the sound, I can only assume that the body cavity is responsible for the difference in tone.

The decorative top is a bookmatched piece of Buck-Eye Burl, which I understand is an American root burr. The headstock is faced in the same timber.

The one-piece neck (no scarf joint) is lightly flamed maple, and features a deep V-shaped profile. The fingerboard is Asian striped Ebony with Abalone inlays.

The pickups are both Kent Armstrongs - a 'Rocker' at the bridge and a 'PAF' at the neck. They are wired through a rotary switch to give a wide range of single-coil and Humbucking sounds.

Here is a close up of the decorative top, complete with sparkly knobs.
