being discerning
Wisdom, and certainly moral wisdom, entails the
capacity to evaluate and judge (Kekes 1995: 14-15). Judgement in this
context is a process ‘by which a decision is reached about what to do or not
do’ given the good that someone wants
to
achieve, and their concrete situation (ibid.: 26). Evaluation entails
putting some value on things. It involves us, according to Elliot W.
Eisner, in developing as connoisseurs and critics.
Connoisseurship is ‘the art of appreciation’
and criticism is 'the art of disclosure’.
