implicit learning / tacit knowledge
Another path into the notion of informal learning is to view it simply
as implicit learning. Such learning results in what Polanyi (1967) calls
tacit knowledge – ‘that which we know but cannot tell’.
Tacit knowledge provides much of the basis for the way we interact with
people and situations.
We
have a ‘taken-for-granted’ understanding of others.
Because this is not explored in any coherent way, such
knowledge can be self-perpetuating and lead to behaviour that is
inappropriate, or not the most productive.
