and groups for young men and women.
Argued for stronger action to advance the social, economic
and spiritual conditions of the working classes.
An important Methodist theologian arguing for tolerance and
Christian unity.
A strong advocate of the formation of the Wesley Guild
(1890): ‘The
sooner we recognize that recreation unorganised is a danger, the better.
Some of us have seen poor and ignorant factory girls called to God first by
giving them healthy physical recreation’. (The Guild had 152,000 members in
some 2000 groups by 1900)
