James McCann on the Internet Y2K - Hardware Risk Assessment

The computing environment in most large companies will be a mixture which comprises proprietary and open system, terminal and client server, centralized and decentralized systems. When assessing risk, consider for each system :

  • CPU
  • Storage devices
  • Input and output facilities
  • Communications processors
  • Networks
  • Operating system
  • Utility software
  • Database management systems
  • Telecommunications control programs
  • Audit and security facilities

For each of these areas, you should discuss with your supplier :

  • Impact of Year 2000
  • The changes that will be needed
  • Who will pay for them
  • Who will implement and test them
