Shirley Manson: Vocals
Shirley Manson
was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on August 26, 1966. She decided early on in life
that she wanted to be an actor rather than a singer.
However Shirley
began her singing career in 1985 at the age of 16. One year later, Shirley
became the backup vocalist for a band named Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie. After Goodbye
Mr. Mackenzie lost its record deal, Shirley decided to embark upon some soul
searching.
Eventually a band
named Angelfish was formed with Shirley being the lead singer. In 1994
Angelfish's first single "Suffocate Me" aired on MTV's 120 minutes.
Steve Marker was watching 120 minutes that night and he arranged a meeting with
Shirley the next day.
Therefore within
24 hours of Angelfish's premiere, Shirley Manson became the lead singer for
Garbage. Shirley then rewrote many of the lyrics of the songs on Garbage's debut
CD, and she wrote all of the lyrics for "Version 2.0" herself.
Butch Vig: Drums, loops, noise, efx
Butch (Bryan) Vig
is originally from Wisconsin. Butch and Steve Marker are co-owners of Smart
Studios which is located in Madison, wisconsin. Smart Studios gained prominence
for producing the demo version of Nirvana's album "Nevermind" which
Butch Vig produced.
Butch along with
Steve were part of a dark and edgy band which was called First Person. After
First Person broke up, Butch went on to become part of a band named Eclipse.
Butch then joined
a band named Spooner. Steve Marker along with Duke Erikson were also in this
band. Spooner had some success with the release of 3 albums along with several
singles from 1978 to 1986. Spooner reunited in 1989 to record a fourth album,
however the band split up permanently in 1993.
After Spooner's
first breakup in 1986, Butch became part of a band named Firetown in 1987.
Firetown had limited success with the release of 2 albums as well as 6 singles.
However, Firetown split up in permanently 1989.
After the split
up of Firetown and Spooner's fourth album in 1989, Butch became part of a punk
band named Rectal Drip along with Steve and Duke. Unfortunately, Rectal Drip was
mostly a filler band for Smart Studios and as a result, it was short-lived.
Butch then spent
much of his time in Samrt Studios working with other bands and doing remixes for
many popular bands while at the same time working on an unnamed band project,
which later became Garbage.
Steve Marker: Guitar, bass, samples, loops
Steve Marker is
originally from New York. He is a co-owner of Smart Studios along with Butch Vig.
Steve was also in
the dark and edgy band named First Person. After the demise of First Person,
Steve began playing for Dennis Navatchal.
Steve was the
person who did almost all of the soundwork for Spooner from 1978 to 1986. Steve
also did all of the sound work for Fire Town from 1987 to 1989.
After that, he
along with Butch and Duke played together in Rectal Drip. Then of course he
helped Butch and Duke with the unnamed band project, later named Garbage.
Duke Erikson: Guitar, keyboard, six-string,
fuzz bass
Duke (Doug)
Erikson was born in Nebraska in a small farming town. Duke thought that he
wanted to be in the art scene, which evnetually landed him in Wisconsin. However
Duke began his singing career at the age of 16.
Duke had met
Steve Marker and went with him to one of his friend's houses one day. That
friend was Butch Vig. Later on, Duke became part of Spooner and had his first
real success with a band.
Duke also played
in Firetown and Rectal Drip. He also worked with Butch and Steve on their
unnamed band project after the demise of Rectal Drip when he had any free time.
Information about Garbage itself:
Garbage was made
up of Butch Vig, Steve Marker, and Duke Erikson originally. The three of them
have worked with several notable bands including Depeche Mode, Nine inch Nails,
Smashing Pumpkins, House of Pain, L7, U2, Korn, and others. Their primary work
was doing remixes for these bands.
One day while the
three of them were creating a Nine inch Nails remix, a friend came into the
studio and told them that the remix sounded like nothing but a bunch of garbage.
Butch then told his friend that this "garbage" would become a song at
a point in the future. Therefore, the three of them decided to name their new
band project Garbage. This name allowed them to let their songs be a blend of
many trashy, garbage-like sounds.
With the addition
of Shirley Manson and a demo of their first single named "Vow" Garbage
was able to land a major recoard deal with Almo Records in 1994. On the few
radio stations "Vow" was played on, it enjoyed almost immediate
success. This lead to Garbage releasing its first self-titled album in 1995.
Garbage enjoyed
quick success and became increasingly popular after their album was released.
When the Smashing Pumpkins asked Garbage to be their opening act on their tour
in 1995, Garbage became even more popular and successful.
Ultimately,
Garbage's self-titled album has sold nearly 6 million copies. The group then
spent over a year recording their latest album, "Version 2.0" which
has sold 3 million copies. Garbage's second album has allowed them to remain
popular and be given continued success.
After multiple
MTV nominations and awards as well as several Grammy nominations for their
albums, Garbage continues to show that they are one of the most popular bands
today. Evidence of this is clear from the number of celebrities that have been
seen at various Garbage concerts. They include Bono, Fran Drescher, Jenna Elfman,
Esthero, Hanson, Chrissie Hynde, Val Kilmer, Courtney Love, Kylie Minogue, No
Doubt, Sporty Spice, and Michael Stipe.
