The Astral Library.

The literature written on this subject takes one of two forms: Either it is a masterly description of the experience, which adds greatly to our understanding, or it is a collection of other peoples 'masterly descriptions' with case studies thrown in. I am not against the latter approach, since for the beginner they serve to introduce all the important information as quickly as possible. However, those books never contain the prize of Astral Projection writing: a new technique!

Here are some of the books on my Astral Projection shelf.

Astral Projection Books.

The Projection of the Astral Body.
    Sylvan Muldoon and Hereward Carrington.
[ISBN 0-7126-2582-8]

The best book written on the subject. A practical man, finds out that he is a natural projector, and sets out to discover how the experience works.

Leaving the Body - a complete guide to astral projection.
    D. Scott Rogo.
[ISBN 0-13-528026-5]

An excellent digest of almost all the techniques for inducing the OBE, with personal accounts and discussion of what the author experienced. The best 'way into' the subject of Astral Projection.

The Phenomena of Astral Projection.
    Sylvan Muldoon and Hereward Carrington.
[ISBN 0-7126-1783-3]

A list of case studies, with comments from Muldoon and Carrington.

The Art and Practice of Astral Projection.
[ISBN 0-87728-246-3]
    Ophiel.

Far too much 'magic' for my taste, but the 'little system' makes this book well worth reading.

Practical Techniques of Astral Projection.
[ISBN 0-85030-141-6]
    Dr Douglas Baker.

Again, far to much 'mumbo-jumbo' but a very worthwhile read in the early stages, before the author takes off to visit the higher plains (leaving his more sceptical audience behind on the ground). The artwork in the book is stunning. I once met the author - quite the rudest man I have ever met!

Journeys Out of the Body.
[ISBN 0-285-62753-8]
    Robert A. Monroe.

Not a personal favourite, since again, the down to earth techniques quickly make way for unsubstantiated narrative. However it has to be noted that a great many people have had success following the system outlined in the book - (Once they managed to decipher it!)

The Llewellyn Practical guide to Astral Projection.
[ISBN 0-87542-181-4]
    Denning & Phillips.

A strong, 'magical' emphasis, but taken with the usual 'pinch of salt' can be useful.

Beyond the Body.
    Susan J. Blackmore.
[ISBN 0-586-08428-2]

This book goes to far the other way. In her attempts to be blisteringly scientific, Blackmore asks you to believe as much conjecture as with the above 'metaphysical' books.

The Astral Body.
    A.E. Powell

Another general book, with some gems of information.

Astral Projection
    Oliver Fox.
[ISBN 0-8065-0463-3]

Another 'classic' in the literature of the experience, this book has been out of print for years, but is now back. Well worth a look, (the system for lucid dreaming was inspired, and is inspiring!).

Have an Out-of-Body Experience in 30 Days!
[ISBN 1-85538-002-1]
    Keith Harary and Pamela Weintraub.

Hmmm. I didn't really get anything new or, practical from this book. You may disagree.

Out-of-Body Experiences, a handbook.
[ISBN 0-85030-761-9]
    Janet Lee Mitchell.

A simple account of the experience, with many case studies and quotes. Not the best book on the subject, however, it would not be a bad start.

Understanding Astral Projection.
[ISBN 0-85030-984-0]
    Anthony Martin.

A tiny work, introducing the subject and outlining the experience.

Out of body Experiences.
    Robert Alvery Copley.

A lovely account of one man's discovery of Astral projection, and where it lead him.

The Study and Practice of Astral Projection.
The Jung - Jaffe view of out of the body experiences,
The Case for Astral Projection.
    Robert Crookall.

The case for Astral Projection from a scientifically minded believer in the reality of OBE. The books are stuffed full of case studies with much intelligent comment and conjecture from Crookall.

Flight of Mind
    H.J. Irwin.
[ISBN 0-8108-1737-3]

A psychological examination of the Out of Body Experience, with well discussed, if a little predicable conclusions.

Other Books with OBE information:

The Romeo error, (Now entitled, "The Biology of Death").
[ISBN 0-340-41727-7]
Supernature.
[ISBN 0-340-40419-1]
    Lyall Watson.

Watson gives the old psychic theories new life, in a modern world. The books provide an interesting and thought provoking introduction into the paranormal and mention the out of body experience along the way.
