Build your
own computer...

Save money, Save time, Save Stress...

Introduction

Whilst building your own computer can become nerve racking, and is not for the novice, there is no reason why competent end users should not consider building their own system. While the cost benefits are less tempting than they used to be, these users can still benefit from the time, skill and patience that only they can provide. Lets face it, computer manufactures these days are either thorough and expensive or cheap but shoddy. I sometimes think that it is worth building your own just to avoid the calls to the technical support line for a returns number.

While you still get what you pay for, by building the computer yourself you can choose where to over and under specify for both quality and performance rather than fall victim to the promises of both in the advertisments. You also save on labour costs since the only payment you require is coffee and encouragement.

The IBM PC was so successfully cloned because it was cobbled together from off the shelf standard parts. This fact has lead us now to the position where anyone can build their own PC clone. This is what every manufacturer has done since IBM. In fact, if you want to, you can make a computer every bit as reliable as the original IBMs by specifying top quality parts. However, like the manufacturers of today, you too can make large savings if you decide to compromise on quality or peformance. Also since each individual part remains guaranteed, you do not lose any of the security and peace of mind you would gain from buying a prebuilt computer.

But, why build a IBM PC clone? - surely that is just increasing the numbers of the wretched things... Well, even though the internal architecture of the PC is a mess, its backwards compatibility and world domination makes it the only serious choice for a computer, and luckily its ease of assembly makes it the ideal DIY computer.

If you've ever fitted an internal card inside a PC then you should be considering building your own computer as a serious option. All you will need to do is to learn a few tricks concerning which parts you can logically fit together on a motherboard, and follow some simple rules when building. It is not a very difficult task and given a fair degree of time and care you should be successful.
