Your email address:
NEWS: (see below for an introduction to the system).

Barebones DOS email version 3.5 test version now available. This version corrects a few bugs and introduces support for a new packet driver: LSPPP. This new driver should help users who find that Barebones fails to connect with their ISP. You can download this new version of Barebones here but remember this version is currently being tested, if you are unsure please try version 3.2 (above) first! Run Barebone.exe to uncompress the system and enter "packetdriver=2" in your settings in EMAIL.BAT to try out the new driver. Please report all bugs!

Barebones DOS email version 3.2 beta now available. A minor update which includes the new TCPMAIL 3.4 The system now supports usernames which contain the '@' sign. (February 2002).(Note to current users who have requested an alert when the page changes: This update was considered to be too small to warrant bothering you with a Barebones Update email!)

Barebones DOS email version 3.1 beta now available. Includes TCPMAIL 3.3, support for multiple recipients, CC/BCC and improved send mail error messages. (February 2002).

Barebones DOS email version 3.0b beta now available. Includes another bug fix in TCPMAIL mail collection. (October 2001).

Another bug fix in TCPMAIL (POP3 mail collection could fail with some mailservers). New version TCPMAIL 3.2 now available below. (October 2001).

Barebones DOS email version 3.0a beta now available. Includes the bug fix (below) in TCPMAIL mail collection. (October 2001).

Bug fix in TCPMAIL (POP3 mail collection could fail with some mailservers). New version TCPMAIL 3.1 available below. (October 2001).

Barebones DOS email version 3.0beta now available! Major improvements all around including a replacement email client: TCPMAIL. (September 2001).

Since Barebones version 3.0beta is a major update, I recommend current users install the system in a new directory alongside their working version for a trial period. You can download the old Barebones version 2.3k here. (September 2001).

User reports bug in SMTPOP.EXE. Barebones 2.3k and below will crash if they receive an email with a line longer than 512 characters in the body of the message. I have found some time to work on my replacement for this program which I hope will be available (in Barebones version 3) by end of Sept/Early Oct 2000.

Altered BAREBONE.COM to allow system to run under Windows. Please - if this change effects any DOS users let me know and I will remove it. (Sept 2000)

Speed setting added: version 2.3j uploaded (17th May 2000).

Barebones version 3 available soon! (May 2000).

New mail viewer debugged in version 2.3i (...and again 12th Dec 1999), (EMAIL.BAT altered too).

New mail viewer utility added in version 2.3h.

  /L bug fixed.

Bug fixes and new functions added in version 2.3f.

EMAIL /C function now produces a working external config file. Useful for moving the system to other computers, or changing between new and old versions of the system.

Bug fixed in DATE function. All users should update to Barebones 2.3c, (or greater), or at the very least install the fixed BAREBONE.COM version 2.1 (Note that for the latest version you must download the complete system).

The Security issue with the EMAIL /R command has been fixed.

Introduction

Old Barebones system   This is a NEW version of my BareBones setup. It is the simplest method of setting up email for DOS based machines: It only requires 4 files! My old Barebones DOS email page can still be found here, and my advanced DOS email system will be available soon.

This original system is not based on any of the other methods of collecting email via DOS available on the internet. It now has hundreds of users all over the world (both commercial and non-commercial) and remains entirely free to use.

Installing the system

Firstly, download the system files by selecting this link. Save the file, BAREBONE.EXE into a new directory on your hard disk.

Next, type BAREBONE to uncompress the system. At this stage if you wish, you can view all the Etherppp and SMTPOP documentation files.

Finally, using a text editor, edit EMAIL.BAT and enter your system configuration details as follows:

Volume in drive E has no label
 Directory of E:\EMAIL

   PPP.EXE98,720 bytes
   TCPMAIL.EXE  94,960 bytes
   BAREBONE.COM36,095 bytes
   EMAIL.BAT21,344 bytes

   4 file(s) 251,119 bytes

Setting up the system

You will need to enter the following information about your computer and your internet service provider into the EMAIL.BAT file. This file has been designed to make the entry of your details as simple as possible. You can view the batch file, together with an explanation of how it works
here. However, you do not have to understand exactly how the system works to use it.

EMAIL.BAT
Set Telephone=The telephone number of your Internet service provider.
  Set Username=Your login username.
  Set Password=Your login password.
Set COMport=The COM port on your computer that the modem is attached to.
Set Nameserver=The address of the nameserver at your ISP.
Set POP3address=The address to collect email from.
Set POP3username=The username used for collection, (often the same as at login).
Set POP3password=The password used for collection, (often the same as at login).
Set SMTPaddress=The address of the machine which sends mail.

The following advanced options are also valid in EMAIL.BAT.

set dial=TSet dial=P for pulse, rather than tone dialing.
set modemstring=You can supply your own modem initialization string here.
set COMadvanced=cNon standard COM port values can be entered here. See EMAIL.BAT
set Speed=9600You can now easily change the connection speed.
set Debug=0Set=1 if you are having trouble sending or receiving mail.
set Leavemail=0Set=1 If you want to leave mail on the server.
set DNS2=You can supply an alternative namesever if you know one.
set DNS3=You can supply an alternative namesever if you know one.

Important note:

The system will not function with HSP (Host signal processing), or so called "Win-Modems, (this is not a limitation of the software but the of the modems).

These devices are not true modems since they rely on the central processor to modulate the phone signal, and come with only MS Windows interface software... (hence the impossibility of making them work with DOS connections). More on why I hate HSP modems here.

Using the system.

Type EMAIL to logon, collect any mail you have from your POP3 mail server, and send any email you have created. Incoming mail will have a seemingly random filename and a .CNM extension. Outgoing mail must have a .MSG extension.

If you want to use a simple editor to create your outgoing mail, type EMAIL /N to create a new, blank email template file (NEW.MSG) ready to be filled in and sent. Remeber to save this message with a new filename and .MSG extension if you want it sent next time EMAIL.BAT is run.

You can easily list and view incoming mail with the Barebones simple viewer which is built into tbe main program. This program can be started with the command EMAIL /V.

If you enter, EMAIL /V old, only mail which has been read and filed will be displayed. Use EMAIL /V new to display new (unread) mail, and EMAIL /V sent, to display any mail waiting in the send queue.

If you want to setup the system to work with Pegasus Mail by David Harris, download Pegasus Mail from here [1.1Mb], saving the self-extracting archive file PMAIL340.EXE in your BAREBONE directory. Type PMAIL340 to uncompress this package. It is important to note that Pegasus Mail is not part of the Barebones system however it can be made to work with the system.

Full system instructions.

Full instructions can be found in the BAREBONE.EXE self-extracting archive file as BAREBONE.TXT or are listed here in full on this site.

A full version history listing for Barebones can be found here.

Graphical Interface.

Ron Clarke has written a graphical front end to Barebones called BBMAIL which you can get from his page here.

Pegasus Mail v3.40 by David Harris  Fully featured email package for DOS. (Windows version also available).
PMPOP is a mail client for Pegasus mail which claims to work over a SLIP connection, however, both versions listed here appear to be bugged. I include the programs here, since a few people have asked for them. If any one has any success with the programs please let me know. Good luck.
PMPOP V1.10The previous link is external to this site.  Mail client for Pegasus mail. Collects mail ok, fails to send to certain, (read: most) SMTP servers.
