Quick PIC Tutorial

The EPIC+ pocket programmer. Eats up batteries like they are going out of fashion but does the job. I had to replace one of the voltage regulators after accidentally leaving the unit on for 24 hours, (easily done when it only has a jumper for a switch).

Connected to the PC via the parallel port (and therefore requires the correct cable (ie not a standard printer cable with Centronics connector). Comes with excellent programming software for DOS and Windows. My version was supplied with an assembler which handles both Microchip and Parallax mnemonics.

There is no ZIF (zero insertion force) connector for the PIC, so you have to use a small screw driver to pry out the PIC from the IC socket for risk of bending the pins.
