  It's an idea which pervades the modern technological world:

  If an item is old, then it has lost it's utility.

  Indeed it seems to many that the older something gets the less usful it becomes.

  A bit of software written 10 years ago, on a machine that old, will still be *just* as useful in 10 years time, for it will perform exactly the same function as it did when it was written. Where is the loss?

  The loss is of course within our perception of the device.
