The heaviest price possible to pay for allegations of sleaze is resignation, or so you'd think. When Neil Hamilton had these allegations thrown upon him during the latter stages of the previous Government, he refused to resign, though. So Martin Bell stepped up.

Former BBC correspondent, well-known for his white suits and whiter-than-white reporting, he agreed to stand against Hamilton as the anti-sleaze candidate for Tatton. And he won. Convincingly.

The question that has to be asked, though, is: have the people of Tatton got a good deal out of this? How competent can Bell be as an MP, with no experience and no party, compared to Hamilton?

Only time will tell.
