I have always had an enormous amount of respect for 'Big Ken'. As Chancellor he did a wonderful job in bringing Britain back to relative prosperity, using a pragmatic approach, at a time when our European counterparts seemed increasingly unable to solve their economic problems.

This was reinforced when I heard him speak at an Economics conference in London. He is a great speaker. There is just one thing on which he and I disagree, and which ultimately has seen him sidelined from the Tory party.

Unfortunately, he is a firm Europhile - a view which has led to his removal, along with Michael Heseltine, to the backbenches.

This man would be my ideal politician - if only he could get his European views sorted out.
