In a way you have to feel quite sorry for John Major. He tried his damndest to lead the country well, but in the end people just seemed to get fed up with both him and his party.
Part of the problem was the people he had around: the legacy of the Thatcher years, the old guard, Clarke, Heseltine, etc. People that probably got a little too complacent in Government, and got a little above themselves.
Still, at least he tried; and he still carries a bit of gravitas in the Conservative party. People still want to interview him, find out his views. And at least now he isn't PM any more, he can indulge himself more in the Great Game: cricket.
