Let There Be Rock!

OK so we said that last year's reunion was a one-off but let's face it, we fibbed. We're doing a short-notice reunion at new venue The Garage, Uplands on the 6th March. Entry is £3 as usual and doors are open from 10pm until 3pm, giving us a whole extra hour to cram in even more tunes. Last year's reunion was one of the best gigs we've ever done so come and join us for a very special night.

The Boys Are Back In Town!

Over 300 Facebook group members later, we are proud to announce a one-off reunion edition of The Strip at Sin City, Dillwyn Street, Swansea (opposite the Potters Wheel) on Saturday 28th February. It's the same format as before only we're going until 3 in the morning! Make sure you get there early to get your requests in...

The Strip Reunited?

It's been a long time since we rock & rolled. People moved away, settled down and got day jobs. However The Strip is currently experiencing a revival of sorts as over a hundred people have signed up to our Facebook group. And so, in a moment of madness Jon decreed that if we get 250 members to sign up to the group then we will organise a reunion night so that the boys and girls of The Strip can rock once more!

Watch this space for more information! We've also updated the links section to make it more up to date.

Don't Fear The Reaper

OK so a few of you may have noticed the lack of activity Striprock-wise these past few months. February was not a good month all-round as we lost a venue for 'Raw' when Fubar went under (you know things are bad when a club's busiest night is on Tuesdays) and then 'Sleaze' was axed by mutual consent a few days later. Since then all the members have been busy with their own projects - Jon is now assistant manager at The Wig, St. Helen's Road. Check out the pub quiz on Sundays and Music quiz on Wednesdays because they're shit-hot! Bruce is pursuing his career as a professional artist and can often be found at Exposure Gallery, College Street. Foz recently made a brief return to DJing to play at the Swansea Institute photography degree fundraiser in Mozarts with Lee & Anthony from Satori in a set that ranged from AC/DC to Kraftwerk, Kaiser Chiefs and King Tubby. Foz and Bruce also took part in 'Far Too Many DJs:The Tsunami Sessions' in March which raised over £200 for the DEC appeal. There is talk of doing another one-off edition of The Strip for a laugh but Swansea is suffering from a chronic lack of decent venues at the moment so it might be a while. Needless to say, we'll keep you posted...

Less cheese - More Sleaze!

Packing more punches than an agitated Tyson Sleaze has burst back onto the Swansea scene on the middle floor of Barons every Thursday night. Entry is £3, drinks are cheap and as usual our music policy is rock, punk, cult pop and indie. After a quiet first week last week was an absolute belter so check it out if you want to know the only place to be on a Thursday night from now on.

"But what about Raw?" you cry. Well because we really like the people who come to Raw we're giving away a free pint of beverage to you if you arrive before 11pm for the next few weeks. The first wave of beer tokens were sent out the other day via our forum mailing list but you'll be able to pick up free beer tokens from us at each edition of Raw, to be used the following week. Think about it - £2 entry but then you get given a free beer. Winner!

'Far Too Many DJs: The Tsunami Sessions' is now only 2 weeks away and we've had coverage already in the Waterfront & South Wales Evening Post with a spot in the March edition of Buzz magazine to follow. The response so far for the event has been amazing and we've now confirmed the main line-up of 14 DJs although there's a chance more may be added at the last minute. The line-up so far is as follows:

  • Brucie B. (The Strip, Cruel Samoan Night)
  • DJ Flames (Bogiez, Sin, TJs)
  • Foz (Sleaze, Raw, The Strip, Lush, Cruel Samoan Night)
  • Disco Stu (Goujons, The Dork Side)
  • xmattx (Coma & Freak*)
  • Chino (Fourplay, Swanscene)
  • Shelley Garner (Headbangers Ball @Bar5)
  • Ceri (Alwaysofyou Promotions)
  • Jordan (The Volts Show)
& introducing...

  • Dangerous Dave
  • Mikey Bam Bam (Reminis)
  • Luke England (S4C)
  • Lee Relfe (Satori)
  • Dai Continuum
(*In Essex)

Entry is £2 and the fun is due to kick off at 9pm on both floors. We genuinely don't have a clue what's going to happen, but that's a good thing. Be there or be a sad pair of Y fronts with no owner.

R.I.P The Strip - End Of An Era

As many of you already know the edition of The Strip on Saturday the 15th was the last one in Bar Five. With over 330 people turning up on the night it was a hell of a way to go out and we'd like to thank everyone who turned up over the last 19 months, you helped make it the most fun it's possible to have with your clothes on!

The decision to stop was a very difficult one. We had a meeting with Barons in late December as it was clear that due to a downturn in attendance it was no longer viable to run The Strip on Saturdays. We decided to finish the night while it was still good so we could end on a high. It's not all bad news though! We are currently in negotiations to start a new rock & indie night in February (more details tba later this week hopefully).

Other news:

  • Far Too Many DJs:The Tsunami Session - Foz has teamed up with a host of other Swansea alternative DJs along with a few complete novices to bring you the ultimate tag-team in order to raise funds for victims of the Tsunami disaster. The night promises to be most unusual as well as good fun so keep checking back here for more info. The event is due to take place at the Monkey Cafe on Monday 7th March.

  • Decade has changed its' name to Fubar in order to move away from its past image as an 80s theme bar. Raw is still running every Tuesday and is doing pretty well considering it's January (the worst month of the year for club nights).

  • If anyone fancies writing a review of December's performances by Amongst Thieves & Changerface at Raw in December email us as there's a pint in it for you!

  • We have an abundance of photos of the Xmas air guitar competition due to go online very shortly so keep an eye on the gallery. If you have any photos of The Strip or Raw, especially the last Strip or from either of the Hotter Than Hell gigs then please email them to us as that would rule!

Twice As Nice

As of tonight The Strip is happening weekly every Saturday until the 11th of September whilst Rubik's Cube are away. So that's The Strip, every week, all summer!

Raw is coming along in leaps and bounds as well and to cap it all off we've got live appearances by Suns Of Thunder and The Neon Lips this month so don't miss out.

01/07/04

School's Out For Summer!

For those of you who are wondering what happened to Sleaze, we've basically had to put the night on hold until further notice for various reasons however like the changing of the seasons we have a brand new era kicking off next week with the first ever decent Tuesday Night event in Swansea - Raw.

Similar in music policy to Sleaze, Raw brings you the best in classic indie, punk, cult pop and rock along with drinks deals set to destroy your liver, not your bank balance. Our opening night is Tuesday the 6th of July and free entry passes will be available at The Strip this coming Saturday.

Sleazy Rider

Well we're a couple of months into running Sleaze at Monkey on Mondays and have seen some really good performances by bands like The Neon Lips, Suns of Thunder, Licking Chocolate Jesus and Gloucestershire boys Loafer. Big hello as well to the geography students from Glasgow Uni who took over the venue and nearly brought it down when we played The Proclaimers. If you haven't come to check the night out yet then come and say hi, with £2 entry, comfy sofas, bands and huge cans of Faxe lager Sleaze will rock your world.

Meanwhile back on the ranch watch out for The Strip 1st anniversary special this June...

Kiss Tribute To Be Rescheduled, Plus Be Seduced By 'Sleaze'

Apologies to everyone who came to see Hotter Than Hell last Saturday, the band and organisers worked really hard to get everything set up for the gig but unfortunately Marty (Paul Stanley) had to pull out before the band were due to play due to illness. We're hoping to re-schedule the event soon and anyone who was there on the night and kept their pink tickets safe will be able to see their return to Swansea absolutely free!

Meanwhile Jon & Foz are starting a new night on Mondays at the Monkey Cafe on Castle Street - 'Sleaze', playing the best classic punk, indie, rock & pop with occasional guest live bands. Entry is £2, open 10-late.

We may actually update the Gallery sometime soon as well! ;-)

God Gave Rock & Roll To You!

Gallery updates - coming soon: The photos from last August's performance by The Crue, Swansea's finest Motley Crue tribute band. Watch this space...

Welcome to the official home of Swansea's no 1 classic rock night - The Strip.

So what's it all about then?

A little while back a few of us were talking about the good old days of our youth when we used to go to these really cool rock nights in Coventry, London and er... rural Gloucestershire. It was back in the days when hair was long, lycra was tight, grunge was appearing, leather was still around and boy bands hadn't been given guitars by their record companies to use as props!

One day, several Jack Daniels later we thought wouldn't it be cool if there was a night in Swansea that took us back to these fond memories. But then no-one would seriously consider putting on a night like that...

June 2003 - Tuesday. While the monstrosity of Nu-metal was dying a terrible lingering death, the nice people of Bar Five in Swansea allowed us to do a one-off pilot for a classic rock night playing exclusively pre-1995 RAWK!!! They wanted us to get a hundred people in, we thought we would only get about twenty. In the end over two hundred people joined us in a celebration of Angus, Lemmy, Ozzy, Axl, Kurt, Ginger and er Ronnie James Dio. The Strip was born!

Since then we moved to a Saturday night slot every other week and have gone from strength to strength. We even made a banner.

What can I expect from this site?

We're not really sure to be honest, but everyone else has one so we thought it would be a good idea. You can check out the dates for forthcoming Strip nights, view our exciting photo gallery and if you like you can even send us some cool photos if you like. Our forum is on the way so you'll be able to talk about who was better out of Sammy Hagar or Dave Lee Roth, compare hairstyles and Slayer tattoos. Plus links to all things rock. Other than that, watch this space!

You said this was The Strip. Where are the naked chicks?

Budget constrictions sort of thing, you know.

P.S. Cheers to Matt Tyler for coming up with an ok name for the night.
