Tootings from Greeting!
TOOTING FROOTIES are back on the highway of human happiness with the release of their new shiny disc on El Substa. It's called 'Live in London' and we can vouch for the fact that they certainly do. The CD contains twelve original compositins by head boy Noel Brown and we think it goes like hell. Boss guitar sounds, great songs and rockin' drums. It all adds up to one of the finest discs you'll shine on your laser for a long time. But before we go any further, there's one or two interesting facts about the band you might like to know......
Back in 1974 it all began with a gig at the Star Hotel in West Croydon. The noted venue had its boards bruised by the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Captain Beefheart years before, but this time the guitar player used a slide rather than his teeth and no-one remembers a trout mask being worn by any band members - there again it was long time ago and musicians are often notorious for having bad memories!
That night Tooting Frooties delivered what they have done at every gig they've played since, flat-out rock'n'roll and dangerous country boogie that never misses its target - the juke-box in your heart. February 11th. 1975 saw them on TV's Nationwide programme at 6.20pm live. Tooting Frooties rocked 12 million boxes in 12 million living rooms that night. They didn't hit the headlines the following day, but the following years brought loads of gigs - pub-rock, punk-rock, glam-rock, Southend-rock and none of it made any difference to Tooting Frooties who continued to rock, rock, rock everywhere they went.
In 1980 came the release of a scorcher of a 45 on the independent label Magic Records. Titled after the legendary Tennessee guitar man, 'Luther Perkins' is pure guitar artistry. The bass and drums do a perfect kickaboom shuffle and if you find one of these gems your player is due to be set at 45rpm for a decent while to come.
Tooting Frooties have shared stages with the best of them - Rockpile, Clover, Tim Rose and Shakin' Stevens have all at one time had to follow Tooting's finest onto the planks, and various members of Tooting Frooties line-ups have played with (either before , during or since being a T.F.) Albert King, Jerry Lee Lewis, David Bowie, Rolf Harris, Screaming Lord Sutch, Doctor John, Bonnie Tyler, John Otway, Kirsty McColl, The Bastards and The Balham Alligators.
