COLD SWEAT (edited by Trevor Barley)

Issue 1 - 1987

editorial:

Welcome to 'COLD SWEAT', a new quaterly mag dedicated to the world of horror. Be it on video, on celluloid, or in print. Of course the word 'horror' is open to interpretation, for where would horror end and, say, sleaze begin and sleaze end and pornography begin. Before we know it we're slipping into Sci-Fi Porn (i.e:Flesh Gordon) and through into Sci-Fi Horror as in 'Frankenstein'. So whether it be 'Gothic Mysticism' or 'Italian Cannibalism' we'll be there, ready to throw in our two penny'th worth, at the same time hoping to be unique in our interpretation of the word!
In issue one The Horror Consultant takes the ferry to Belgium to check out the video scene there. Also on the menu we have 'Banned Designs' (a kind of cryptic French pun) in which we will cartoonise some of Ferman's Forbidden Footage! Kicking off with Barbara Crampton baring all for the sake of art in 'The Re-Animator'! Plus we have Video Vortex 'The Wonderful World of Andy Milligan', Book & Fanzine Reviews, a Video Nasties Checklist, Ad Nauseum and much much more. To coin a phrase, "I never knew there was so much in it!"

Well as you may or may not know, this year is the centenary of Jack The Ripper (J.R. to his friends). And we here at COLD SWEAT are... well, not exactly celebrating, (even we would'nt sink that low)... more..er..drawing your attention to the fact. How has a person who went about murdering and mutilating innocent women come to be almost a hero of folklore? Why there's even an Eastend pub named after him, with his victim's names written on the walls. A strange state of affairs indeed! Do you think in years to come we'll be nipping down 'The Hindley & Brady' for a swift half?
But, perhaps it's not Jack The Ripper's awful deeds that has enabled him to remain the world's most famous criminal but the atmosphere and complete sense of history that surrounds the murders, Victorian London with it's swirling fog and handsome cabs etc. That is why Jack The Ripper endures where as serial killers like Henry Lucas, who admits to killing over 360 people cruising up and down Route 66 will be forgotten. Of course the other major factor could be the fact that he was never caught making him into some kind of boogyman. Perhaps Jack The Ripper is the original Jason Voorhees?
