Hank Janson #11

NYMPH IN THE NIGHT
by Hank Janson

WHAT THIS STORY IS ABOUT

"A woman did it," Hank said, with that criminological perspicacity which has brought him journalistic fame. How right he was depends on the way you look at the final analysis But, be that as it may, this is a Whodunit with some surprising twists that will set your detective instincts working overtime. You might call it a Whodunwhatandwhen, with so many characters coming within the focus of suspicion.

Getting on the scent of the murderer of
John Stern had a double meaning for Hank, adding to the tangle of mystery. The perfume in the murder vehicle was inescapable. Wasn't that evidence that a woman was the culprit? Then who could the main suspect be other than the dead man's missing wife, Shirley?

It was a piece of smart plotting between Hank and his old police buddy, Detective-Inspector Blunt, that set the trap that was finally to snap down so surprisingly on the guilty party. To say any more than that here would be to spoil one of the most intriguing narratives in Hank's wide experience.

And, on the subject of experience, you might conclude at the finish that our newshawk doesn't always know his women!
