In front of the day’s judge Mr. Peter Kirton, who runs the noted Ashledge pedigree herd at Severn Lodge Farm, Kinlet, Bewdley, Worcs, Tomschoice Elgar emerged from a strong intermediate class of bulls before picking up the Overall Male Championship and moving on to take the Overall Supreme. Elgar is a son Haltcliffe Vermount, the 100,000gns world-record priced Limousin bull, and is out of the homebred dam, Tomschoice Artiste. Artiste is a daughter of Sarkley Topknot, a bull the Coopers won the Limousin Overall Supreme Championship with for the first time at the Great Yorkshire in 2004. A multi-title outing saw Tomschoice Elgar also win the Overall Junior Limousin Championship before moving on to be part of the winning Junior Interbreed Team, and to be placed Reserve in the Junior Interbreed Individual Championship.

Commenting, the judge said that his Champion “was an outstanding young bull” and had come from the strongest male class of the day. He said: “The Champion is a tremendous animal for his age and has great length and shape. He is very correct on his legs and has excellent mobility and locomotion. I think he is a great example of a modern Limousin and is a bull that will be suitable for both pedigree and commercial use.” For a delighted owner, James Cooper, it was a second Great Yorkshire Show Championship following on from the win in 2004. Speaking immediately after the judging, James said: “It’s a feeling of elation to win such a big title and one that is also our local show! The Great Yorkshire Show is growing into England’s foremost show of cattle and livestock and I think the standard and competition in the Limousin ring was reflective of that.” Tomschoice Elgar is now being aimed at the October Bull Sale in Carlisle.

At the close of judging, Peter Kirton reflected on the cattle presented to him on the day and said: “The standard of cattle forward was very high, particularly in the younger cattle, both male and female, where the there was strength and depth right through. I would like to congratulate all the Limousin breeders for the cattle they have presented and it has been a great honour for me to judge The Great Yorkshire, which is perhaps now England’s premier agricultural show.”
