North Church of St. Andrew

The friendly, lively, city-centre church, dedicated to serving God, our members, and our parish THE NORTH CHURCH OF ST. ANDREW is the Parish Church of the Church of Scotland serving the area of the city between King Street and the sea, from the foot of King Street northwards to Pittodrie. It is situated between the City Arts Centre and "The Lemon Tree," near the junction of Queen Street and King Street.

HISTORY: The North Church of St. Andrew is a union of two former congregations each with its own distinctive history. The North Church was founded in 1843 as a Free Church congregation which broke away from the North Parish Church (whose former building is now the City Arts Centre.) It became the North United Free Church in 1900, and the present building was opened in 1905.

King Street Church had its origins in a Seamans' Mission founded in 1839, becoming St. Andrew's United Free Church, which united with Nelson Street United Free Church in 1909.

When the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland re-united in 1929, both became Parish Churches. The King Street and North Parish Churches united in 1968 to become the North Church of St. Andrew, with its home in the Queen Street building. The congregation welcomed a new minister to the charge in 1997, and is now looking forward to adding a new chapter to its long history of worship and service.

SUNDAY WORSHIP is central to all of our life and activity. It takes place at 11 a.m. every Sunday. In addition members attend and participate in the monthly services of OAK.

We have the assistance of an enthusiastic choir and a fine organ to lead our praise, which is a varied diet from both traditional and contemporary sources.

Holy Communion is celebrated at all services on four Sundays in the year, and occasionally at other times. The sacrament of Baptism is offered for children and adults, and usually takes place at morning worship. Our large and splendid sanctuary is reached by stairs, so our street-level chapel allows those for whom this presents a difficulty to participate fully via a closed-circuit t.v. link. The chapel also allows a more intimate atmosphere for worship at smaller gatherings. There is a well-equipped and supervised crèche on Sunday mornings for children under 3.
