FACTS ON DENMARK

  • Until 1997, there were 2.14 pigs for every person in Denmark.
  • King Niels of Denmark, who ruled from 1104 - 1134, was one of five brothers, sons of Sweyn Estridson, who all became kings in succession. He also had of of the smallest armies that the world has ever known -- seven men -- his huskarle or personal assistants. With this 'army' he ruled Denmark for 30 years, at a time when Denmark also consisted of large parts of Sweden and Norway and parts of which is now nothern Germany, and he only waged war two times. For war he could call in all weaponbearing men, but that was costly. This peaceloving man was stabbed to death at the age of 70 in the streets of Slesvig by supporters of his infamous nephew, Canute Lavard.
  • The Danish flag, the Dannebrog, is one of the world's oldest flag
  • Queen Margrethe II and all former kings of Denmark can trace their ancestry back to a man who lived in the 10th century and is recognised as the first king of Denmark -- Gorm the Old.
