Facts about Mexico

The current Mexican flag
was adopted in 1968,
but it is essentially the same
tricolor first introduced in
1821. The coat of arms,
which was added in
1823, depicts an eagle
eating a snake atop a
cactus on an island in the
middle of a lake. It
relates to an Aztec
legend and to the site
of Mexico City, which
was built on the dry
bed of Lake Texcoco.
