  Compiled by Miss S.V.Benson, 1937,  giving descriptions of the plumage, size of birds, and information respecting their eggs, nests, food.

Printed from 1937 to 1982 inclusive.

  224 pp, 200 illustrations covering 226 species, in colour and black & white.

There are 50 known print variations and 3 which have laminated coverings.

There also 12 different dustjacket fronts, and the laminated front has only 1 type.

In 1953 the word British was removed from the title.

  With only minor changes, it was in print for nearly 50 years, with over 3 million copies being sold.
