The Dead Next Door

J.R.Bookwalter
1989
Made for little money on super 8mm film this has
got to be classed as a great achievement.Funded partly by
"Sam Raimi" of "Evil Dead" fame this zombie
massacre is one of the best of its type, okay, so it's no
"Dawn of the Dead" or "Zombie Flesheaters",
but next to those classics this rates very highly ! There's loads
of gore although, some of the effects do look cheap and most of
the acting is crap ! But seeing as the film has been made very
much tongue in cheek there can actually be counted as a plus
point. The gore , and believe me there's plenty of it !, is well
over the top with blood spurting six feet in the air.
A virus is turning everyone infected by a bite
into a flesh craving zombie, so the human population are waging
war against them with zombie squads searching for survivors
trapped by the monsters. For the type of move it's got quite an
elaborate plot with religeous cults and mad scientists getting
involved in the fast paced storyline. This film is like a breath
of fresh air compared to most of the crap produced nowadays and
cant be more highly recommended.
Gore Highlights
The first scene of the film sees a zombie
ripping a chunk out of somebodys neck before killing all his
mates.
Then there's the scene which involves a zombie
being shot in the head, having its head chopped off and then
managing to take a chunk out of a guys fingers which sends blood
spurting everywhere !
In fact this film has all the hallmarks of a
zombie gore classic, with loads of neck chompings, entrail
rippings, mad scientists doing weird experiments on the dead,
face ripping, tongue chomping and over the top blood spurting
about six feet in the air.
Overall some of the effects may be cheesy but
most are highly effective!!
