Tombs of the Blind
Dead

Amando De Ossorio
1971
The first if the blind dead series, which
eventually ran to four episodes, sees the undead Templar Knights
coming back from the grave to slaughter the innocent people in
the area. You could call this a zombie flick, but in esssence
it's not ! The director refers to them as mummies, but for me
this is zombie territory all the way. Although the film doesn't
score highly on the gore stakes it does contain some very strong
imagery, an example of this is the scene where the girl is bound
to a wooden cross and then slashed to death by the Templars.
Although I personally love this film because of it's dark mood
and a fantastic climax where a train load of people get wasted,
it can't really be recommended to anyone but zombie fans as most
others will find it a bit slow perhaps.
GORE HIGHLIGHTS
What Gore??? There isn't any that I class as
gore in here, there's some blood in parts but this film relies
more on the unseen off camera violence and imagination of the
audience to be scary. For that reason alone this one deserves
recommendation because in parts it really does hit the mark. The
ending is a classic hallmark of the best zombie movies, the bad
guys win!!!
