Introduction

Surrey is situated to the north of Sussex. The ancient county of Surrey included many parts of what is now south and south-west London. Its main centre is Guildford which is home to the University of Surrey and also has a modern cathedral.

The Surrey History Centre at Woking is the place to find all parish registers and many other records relating to the county of Surrey. The SHC is part of the Surrey History Service and combines the old Record Offices which were at Guildford and Kingston upon Thames. The ancient county of Surrey contained over 150 parishes but boundaries and responsibilies have altered several times. Some relevant records may be held in London repositories so check on availability before visiting the SHC.

There are two main societies for people researching in Surrey. The dividing line between the interests of the West and East Surrey societies runs roughly along the River Mole.

The West Surrey Family History Society covers the parishes in the west of the county including those of Woking and Guildford. The WSFHS offers the usual membership benefits of a quarterly magazine and the opportunity to register your research interests. They publish useful research materials and membership gives you access to many other unpublished indexes.

The East Surrey Family History Society caters for researchers in the east of the county which includes Croydon and other parts of what is now London. The ESFHS has produced a lot of useful publications including many 1851 census indexes for the Surrey parts of London. Some of their other publications have been produced jointly with the WSFHS.
