Dear Diary ... We were all intrigued by a report in yesterday's Daily Telegraph about tenants in Sheffield who were asking their council to ban the under 40s from their estate. This article (click here to read it on the Electronic Telegrah site) has caused considerable debate, both among residents and committee! The "Painted Fabric" estate in Meadowhead in Sheffield has 200 flats occupied by mainly elderly people. It was built in the early 70s. This description from the Telegraph sounds a little familliars - just alter the number to 300 flats and make the date of building to mid-1960s, and it could be Kingsholm. Anyway, 78 residents held a protest meeting over a noisy neighbour - and they voted for a ban of under-40s being allocated flats. Bernard Palmer, the chairman of the tenant's association, told the Telegraph that when the flats were built, they were for the best council tenants (just like our estate!). "Now those tenants have grown old and don't want disturbing in their later years," he said. We will have to get in contact with the tenants group and swap "notes".. Was it the hot, sunny day? No one came to our surgery this afternoon, so we had a quiet day! But the matter of the railings in Sherborne Street still continues, with the Safer City department of the City Council getting involved. Why Safer City is getting involved we just don't know because we have a letter written some three years ago) on file from that department telling us that they could not consider a project in Sherborne Street because there was no record of any accident in the street! We sense a big - and totally unnecessary - row brewing. So you want more of "Only In America ..." Only in America ... do you order triple fries, double burger and a diet Coke. Now, how about some "Only in social housing ... " gags. Publishable ones emailed to us that make us chuckle will appear in this Diary. Just a quick reminder that we DO know about the problems with the guest book. The problem is being worked on, but we suspect that the snag is at TenZero, the company that provides the guestbook at no cost to us. Some of you are Emailing us instead - and thanks for the comments. |
